After recently purchasing the UC1/UF1 and UF8 I can safely say that I absolutely adore the SSL way of doing things. The first console I ever got to use was one of the modern SSL consoles and I spent three years in University ONLY using that console. I loved everything about it and now I'm trying to get myself back into the SSL World. Truthfully, as someone that runs a more commercial studio I really want that SSL18 but I dont want to compromise myself into having only 44.1 and 48khz (Which is where I'm stuck at the moment) I'm going to need more IO than what SSL offer at the moment which is a real shame, As truthfully I want to just have an SSL Rack and use nothing else :D

This interface is so appealing, but a major drawback to me is it’s missing db25 line input connections. Other interfaces use that and makes it a one stop shop. I also see why maybe they made that decision, as the alpha 8 provides that, but not the other features in the ssl 18….

Excellent move by SSL: an interface that does simple, quality AD/DA via USB, with actual hardware balanced jacks (not the pesky & costly D-Subs), and individually selectable reference levels, an onboard heaphone out... plus it's reasonably priced! 👏🏻👍🏻 (All it misses for total perfection is the ability to daisy chain 2 or 3 of them with just one cable, as the excellent MOTU AVB line did) PS1, video editor: it's SontronICS, written on the mics, the guy's shirt, and in pretty huge letters on the booth backdrop! 🤷🏼♂️ PS2: while the QSC guy who ate all his hipster vitamins is talking, the son of Paul McCartney and Ed Cherney appears in the background... 😉

I feel like audio gear isn't really gonna get better at this point. There's not much more innovation left to do.
@ProducelikeaproКүн бұрын
I hear what you're saying
@balisaaniКүн бұрын
You would be sorely mistaken. For starters, studio monitors of today are highly innovative, and leave their 20-year old brethren in the dust. There's no comparison. On the other end of the audio chain, there's substantial innovation on the microphone end, not least with the Lewitt RAY, but also with the UA and S mic modeling offerings. Outboard gear has shown some great innovation as well, for instance the Cranborne Audio integrated line of 500 series products - stellar in all regards. And instruments wise, be it synthesizers, digital stage pianos or electro acoustic keyboards (both Vintage Vibes and Rhodes have come up with brilliant enhancements to their competing products), or basses and guitars, I'm seeing some pretty hair raising stuff. I wish I'd had access to all this innovation when I got out of Berklee, or even 20 years ago. You've just no idea, and you've no idea how much innovation is cooking around the world in R&D labs.

All these innovations man, great on paper. Still music sounded way better in 1965, and sonics definitely hasn't improved. Why have we still not improved on the 80 year old U47 for example.

@@alexchernikov6276 Guess im just so fed up with how modern music sounds🤣 Still some people who do it the proper way and make good recordings though.
@henrikpetersson3463Күн бұрын
It has improved tremendously since 1965. So much better for a lot less money. The problem is that the market is quite conservative and want what they are familiar with. If you put the U47 as the gold standard then anything that sounds different from that will sound worse, regardless if it sounds better or not. There are so many awesome new microphones on the market now, both transparent and heavily coloured. Many of them I would personally pick before a U47. Those old microphones are very good, but they have also been glorified, and in the ears of some people nothing will be able to touch them. It’s a bit like The Beatles is for some people. Try to listen to some 60s recording objectively. Most of them doesn’t sound very good. But there is so much else emotionally connected to that sound and it’s sometimes hard to separate it.
@MariJu1ceКүн бұрын
@@henrikpetersson3463 Yes maybe the cheap stuff in the 60s was pretty bad compared to now, but the good records that were made without compromise sounded amazing objectively. And to me 10 times better than the A list stuff today. Ofc there has always been bad stuff, but the ceiling of how freaking awesome the gear sounded back then was so much higher than the best of the best "new stuff" today. Ive used all the so called "glorified" mics, and I've tried much of the new stuff, There is nothing like a good 67, C12, 251, M49. Simply magical. I just put u47 as an example. This modern stuff have never resonated with me. And how you can say the 60s stuff like the Beatles objectively sound bad, I don't get at all. Totally ok with that opinion. But to me those albums are one of the best sounding recordings ever made in my ears. Im trynna give new stuff a chance every once in a while, but its kinda depressing to not like anything new and I feel isolated. Since everybody is so crazy about the new modern music coming out, I just don't get any of it. Nothing about the sonics of modern records resonate with me. Everyhting is just so freaking loud and plastic sounding, I have no idea why people like that, and since it seems everybody likes it except me; it leaves me feeling a bit lonely and puts me in a negative space after when listening to that. And I also began to think that engineering is a lost art of the past. This new stuff, I just don't know how to give it a fair chance I guess.
@MariJu1ceКүн бұрын
@@henrikpetersson3463 I wrote a comment but youtube deleted it :/. Anyways, I'm talking about the best of the best music from that time v.s this time. Go listen to the top 40 now and then. Maybe there is better budget gear now. But the best records I'm referring to were made with no compromise. The best of the best back in 1965 was recorded and engineered 100 times better than stuff today. It is truly a lost art. I cant understand how people are so crazy about this new modern hyper loud plastic sound. Makes me depressed, because I cant relate to anyone around me when It comes to music. Ive used all the "glorified" mics, they were simply just made better than stuff today, they weren't built to a price, and there weren't so many compromises. I was just using the u47 as an example. could also be c12,251,m49 etc, I've used them all, and some of the modern counterparts. For example take vacuum tubes as an example, a pair of NOS tubes will last for years, but the new tubes are just objectively bad and last so short. IMO it feels like technology has regressed majorly in quality. In Guitars, also the same. Look at the golden era gibsons vs today. In this so called technologically evolved time, why cant we build a guitar like they did back then and not have it cost 10k. And to use the Beatles as an example of objectively bad sounding stuff is just really funny to me. I'm not talking about measuring pristine distortionfree audio quality here. Where is the vibe and personality of modern records? The old egineering just had so much vibe and soul. Its mostly gone in even A list stuff today.
