In this video, written by Dr Mari Takayanagi and presented by Sammy Sturgess, we hear the story of the first women to take her seat in the House of Commons: Nancy Astor.
While Astor's parliamentary career was in many ways inspirational, she is not an uncontroversial figure. As Professor Julie Gottlieb (King's College London) writes, "we cannot get away from the fact that she was a 'fellow traveller' of the Right [in the 1930s], that she had no qualms about entertaining Nazis, expressing deep prejudices herself."
