This isn't Nancy Drew though; Nancy in the original books was way too smooth to run afoul of the law. She was too mentally agile and quick to get into many jams and the only risks she ran were with the bad guys. She was fearless but not careless.

hedwegg Awful brats, kids doing whatever they wanted, making life a misery for those around them. I wouldn't want my kids to think that was how they should behave. The "real" Nancy in the early books didn't act that way and neither did her friends. Hard to see how murders, pranks that cause a driver to not be able to see out, lying about a story, ordering more than they could pay for at a restaurant, etc are wholesome. I felt sorry for the girl who legitimately won the journalism prize and lost to Nancy's false news. I also didn't think the "real" Nancy would be so manipulative of men or then go all helpless and tell Ted to "do something." This isn't the strong, caring, independent-minded Nancy we knew. This is more like a screwball comedy than our "real" Nancy. Certainly a couple of juvenile delinquents are no replacement for Bess and George.

45 some years ago, I was a die hard Nancy Drew reader. I wanted to be Nancy Drew when I grew up. Those books were a window on a time in the states which was golden. Nancy had money, a single Dad, a doting housekeeper. She had graduated high school, done a little college. She had done her duty: she and her two best friends, Beth and George, had hooked "nice" boys as potential husbands. Not quite engaged , but shyly committed. The boys ( around 20 yrs old) had to finish college and go to work, to achieve the right sort of financial status needed to properly look after a nice girl in classy surroundings Nancy had beautiful clothes, a fancy, fast car. And ... TITIAN hair!!! She spent her days pursuing her own fun, or doing charity work. She took her sleuthing seriously. And what's SHOCKING, her FATHER took her hobby seriously! Nancy Drew; forever young.

It all started in 1930 with The Secret of the Old Clock. Harriet Adams, daughter of the legendary and prolific magic-maker Edward Stratemeyer, using the nom de plume of Carolyn Keene, wrote 46 of the Nancy Drew novels as of '78. Stratemeyer was the genius behind the magic mill that was called the Stratemeyer Syndicate, formed in 1927, which published a seemingly endless number of novel series for young people. He used 46 noms de plumes and wrote 250 novels and had a hand in 700 others. He was called 'the father of the 50-centers". In '78 they were at 1.50$, now they are more like 20$. He wrote 3 Nancy Drew novels prior to his decease in 1930, when Mrs. Adams took over. In the '60s she rewrote several of them to modernize them, eliminating, among other things, the old Afro-American dialect. The Dana Girls (34 novels from '34-'79) was meant as a counterpart to the Hardy Boys, but Nancy Drew (101 novels from '30-'91) was more popular. Grosset & Dunlap did most the publishing, and my books from the '60s, in the Hardy Boys, Ken Holt, Rick Brant, etc. series, were more modern verions, so later authors and G & D deserve a lot of the credit for the magic, too. Bonita Granville, nicknamed Bunny, started in films as a teen playing brats, which she liked to do. ''It started my career,'' she told David Zinman, author of the excellent Saturday Afternoon at the Bijou (1978), in a telephone interview. ''And I enjoyed doing roles as heavies. It was always easier for me than just playing myself.'' One would think it would be the inverse! But she soon grew tired of it, and then Warner Brs. and Nancy Drew came along. There were 4 movies, all in '38 and '39: Nancy Drew, Detective; Nancy Drew, Reporter; Nancy Drew, Trouble Shooter; and Nancy Drew and the Hidden Staircase. She was also a producer for the Lassy TV series and Franky Thomas was also known for Tom Corbett, Space Cadet. Bonita was only 5' 2'' or 5', depending on the source, weighing in at only 105 lbs. Oddly, her female sidekick in the novels was a tomboy, being tall, athletic, and having the name of George. Edit: At NancyDrewSleuth.com it says that in 1993 Mildred Benson (née Augustine) was officially and legally acknowledged by the owners of Nancy Drew as the author of books 1-7, 11-25, and 30.

I was a readaholic as a kid. I went threw the Happy Holisters first. Then the Hardy Boys. Tom Swift was next read all our library had by the fifth grade i could not find anything good left so went on to the classics like Treasure island, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, The Count of Monte Cristo and David Copperfield. We were poor so could only get 2 TV channels.

carl reed And how many channels did the rich kids get? :) And did their channels run all night while yours signed off by midnight? We were so poor that...our NBC peacock only had one feather. Our CBS eye had a patch over it. Our tv aerial only had one rabbit ear and even that ear drooped toward the floor. Our picture tube was so small we couldn't watch without a magnifying glass. Our reception was so bad we once put on coats to go to school in late May only to find out the weather report wasn't being broadcast in a blizzard. Our tv was so bad we gave up and just called it radio. :)

There will be no conviction without two eyewitnesses. Even a confession does not convict without a second witness. To do otherwise is to bring curses upon our land.

Was their more then one Nancy Drew? Been a long time since I have seen. Thanks for sharing

Four of these movies were made. Nancy Drew -- Detective November 19, 1938, This one Nancy Drew... Reporter February 18, 1939. Nancy Drew... Trouble Shooter June 17, 1939 and Nancy Drew and the Hidden Staircase September 9, 1939. Unfortunately they didn't appeal to the major audience as well as the Andy Hardy movies with Mickey Rooney at the time, in which Warner Brothers was competing with MGM and so the WB studio only made these four.

Why did the teacher always look at me funny when I said I liked reading Nancy Drew circa 1976? 😇🙏👀📖

Same. Hardy Boys stories were dull, by comparison.

In the old movies his name seems to be Ted.

I always read Nancy Drew in her maroon roadster. In the books, Ted was Ned Nickerson.

Wouldn't the boxer recognize Nancy when she rushed into the ring? >_>
