Nancy shares more of her favorite tools. This video is about her favorite quilting rulers made by Omnigrid. She has tried many others but she likes these the most. She has five favorite ones.
The small ruler, 4 x 14 inches, easily goes everywhere and is perfect for class. She rarely takes her bigger rulers because the corners can easily chip off and they are expensive.
She loves that you can see through the ruler and all the measurements show on dark and light fabrics. On the dark fabric, the yellow measurements lines are easily seen. On the light fabric, the black measurements lines can be easily seen. There are little gaps in the lines so you can know where the fabric is on the line.
Nancy loves the dot at every quarter of an inch. But the thing she loves best are the angles. The Omnigrid long rulers have the 60, 45 and the 30 degree angles all at the bottom of the ruler in both directions. Not many other rulers have that.
For doing much of the quilting, Nancy likes to use the 8.5 x 24 inch Omnigrip ruler with a little bit of grip on the back. A little bit of grip is good but she doesn't want the ruler to grip too much. She wants to easily move her rulers.
If you do want a ruler to grip, there is a product called InvisiGRIP by Omnigrid. You can cut it and put it on the back of the rulers for no slip.
Then there are the square rulers. Nancy loves her 9.5 inch one for squaring up, fussy cutting or 6 inch designs. There's a diagonal right up the middle for trimming down half square triangles. A great option for a beginning quilter.
The 12 inch square ruler is her workhorse. She works with the 12 inch quite a bit. It is great for power cutting fabric.
The last one Nancy uses is the 15 inch. She likes it because it is big but not too big. She uses it for larger blocks and wonky coping strips.

Ive noticed that some newer rulers are made with a different type of acrylic. I bought one and took it straight back after trying to cut with it. I’ll also stick with my Omigrid.

That 15 inch is also a pretty handy size for making T-shirt quilts.

For beginners, I would suggest a 12 1/2 inch square and a 6 x 24 inch ruler. I also absolutely love my 20 1/2 inch square for squaring up a quilt but I don't travel with it. A 6 1/2 inch square is also handy for travelling.

I love my Omnigrid rulers, the only one I have an issue with is the 6 X 23 inch Omnigrip. They flipped the numbers, so I have to flip the ruler to use the 23 inch part.

Thanks Nancy for this video. I own several of these rulers but I have such a hard time reading the measurements. The yellow markings seem to block the lines. Any tips on how to read the lines? Thanks again

Hi Toni, i find the yellow markings are what i like best as they surround the black mark - the yellow shows on dark fabrics and the black on the light - Nancy
