The paradox of Nancy Wilson is that she's at once the most elegant, poised, sophisticated lady, yet the most daring, emotional actor who holds nothing back to identify with a lyric and "own" a song. No vocalist has a finer control of pitch (including her "quarter tones," and the biggest and longest "wails" you'll ever hear, sometimes maintained just slightly off-pitch before her musicianship tells her to bring it into alignment. She can handle the complex stories of Cole Porter and Lorenz Hart in 32-bar and beyond standards, and she can ride her wail up into the stratosphere, even employing multiphonics like a great jazz musician (John Coltrane). The present song strikes me as more limited in melodic, rhythmic possibilities and emotional range. It's basically a single-idea, single-emotion song: the title says it all. Or so we think. After Nancy sings it, we have to rethink what we thought was just another simple song about unrequited love and its frustrations. From te time I heard " Hollywood My Way" I've loved Nancy Wilson, to my way of thinkng this great artist will always be one of the greatest singers in both Jazz and Pop , and the way Nancy carried herself CLASS with a capital C.
