This is exactly the type of enclosure I like for ALL out poultry. Natural is far better for the birds. I too am opposed to the cages. Thank you for posting this, love it.

This is by far the best set up I have ever seen, I would love that, I really hate to see them in cages, keep thinking of getting quail, but keep reading, they say the smell bad, I love to know your reply to that please 😊
@borderfarm406

we have quail because they don't have super loud calls, and they don't smell bad, especially if you keep their enclosure clean. Their manure in their straw bedding is also NPK neutral and great for compost

A carefully thought out quail pen, taking into account the quails needs in your climate. Inspiring ! Does your Border Collie go on point with your quails? Quails, Border Collies and garden! Subbed.

quail are wild birds, in our natural rearing program we give them safety from predators, but access to nature- the nesting area is wind free, but even on a -30° day they will be walking around in the snow. We don't add heat, we just make sure there is ample food and water

By far one of my favorite quail habitats. What zone are you in? Wondering about wintertime here on Long Island. Have not had quail through Winter yet and trying to get ready for cold weather.
@borderfarm406
@borderfarm406 Жыл бұрын
we are zone3 sometimes 4 - with the green house protected nesting area there is no wind or moisture, so even when we get to -40° they can nest in the deep straw out of the elements. We loose quail during summer breeding season but have never lost one in winter to cold. Have fun with your quail project!

Genius!!! I’m learning about Quails, Can we do like a Deep litter system, lay down mulch material in the cage. Can we also “Free range” like chiken in small area later in evening they go back in cage by themselves 😅
@borderfarm406
@borderfarm406 2 жыл бұрын
you cannot free range quail - unless they are in a netted or screened in area - they are food for every predator in your area - including your neighbors cats and hawks.

love this build, seems like an almost perfect setup. I am curious though, you stated you only keep the females in here. Do you have another setup for breeding, brooding, etc?
@borderfarm406
@borderfarm406 Жыл бұрын
we have quail tractors we move through our pasture during the summer that has our males and female/male groups. Eating egg set up and hatching egg set up are super different - you kind of have to concentrate on one or the other, unless you have a big operation.
@HostageDK
@HostageDK Жыл бұрын
@@borderfarm406 so you raise for eggs only? You don't do any hatching?
@borderfarm406
@borderfarm406 Жыл бұрын
@@HostageDK yes I hatch about 120 eggs every 25 days April thru July - but I buy the hatching eggs from a friend that just raises hatching eggs, and that leave my ladies to leave eating eggs for us and the restaurants we sell too.

Wonderful set up! I'm curious to know if you have tried growing tall grass inside their pen to make it more natural. Do they eat grass? Can you grow grass for seeds to feed them? I'm looking for ways to grow seeds/vegs to feed quails.

when we weed, prune, or remove grasses from the garden, we put them in there, they love the greens, roots, dirt, and all bugs that are on them. You can't grow anything inside the enclosure - they would eat it or mash it all down in about a week.

I would love smething like this for my quail. I have them in a small outdoor one thats about three by four feet right now. I only have 11 quail. Last year I over wintered them in a giant wooden box we keep rabbits in sometimes. What would you recommend for keeping rats out though? I've lost one hen and another one has a scar from getting bitten by rats. We can't put out poison because of the dogs. Our fat house cats aren't much help. I would love to remove the hardware cloth from the bottom of my coop so they can dig in the grass. I just don't want my flock annihilated by wild rats. They tore one of my full grown hens to pieces.

@justine157 6 ай бұрын
You can try putting out RatX which is different from regular rat poison and is mostly safe for dogs. But rats can learn to avoid it after a while. I think keeping livestock just goes hand in hand with a never ending battle with rats...

about every 2-4 weeks depending on the season - it is raking it out and adding more sand. The straw bedding area we flip like the deep litter method in the winter months and in the summer keep it very minimal and change about once a month
