Oh, my gosh, Nancy! Your videos have been lifesavers for me! Even though I've taught in a first grade classroom for 22 years, this feels kinda brand-new to me! And....I have a 15 month old daughter (and two older sons) so.....you've given me the confidence that I CAN DO THIS (and still teach in my classroom during the day). Aaaahhhh! Thank you for taking the time to develop these awesome, informative videos! P.S. Ava is absolutely adorable!

This is truly one of the most helpful videos I've seen so far. It's exactly what I need, actual classroom footage, and particularly some highlighting challenging times. I appreciate a teacher would share their difficult moments and show us newbies that it's normal to deal with awkward silence, confusion, wrong-level slides and whatever else might go wrong. I have the feeling though that the two boys were a bit more mature and possibly would have responded better to a more serious approach (though I could be wrong as I couldn't see their expressions). As an aspiring online teacher I'd like to ask, is it always necessary to maintain the cheery-goofy vibe of an entertainer, even if a student doesn't respond to it?
@NancyTaylor6 жыл бұрын
Daya! Definitely adjust to what works best for the student. The lessons were far to easy to start for these boys, and it was off on leveling from my part as well to begin, but you will learn to quickly identify that and adjust! They did not need to sing their ABC's. They were definitely embarrassed when I asked them too, but sometimes that happens. With the new MC Trial 3.0 they are already leveled, so it is a bit less stressful on the teacher who was originally assessing and teaching all in one and adjusting... lots of adjusting. Be you, and they will love it! I'm not always goofy. I promise.

I am a new teacher to VIPKid. I was booked for a trial class earlier this week and the information on the student was pending. I was so stressed out about not knowing what lesson to start out at. The class ended up being a student no show, so it wasn't a big deal but I now have two classes scheduled for Friday morning, both trials, and they also both say information pending. I'm not sure what to do? Any suggestions? There are materials listed, but there isn't a suggested starting point. Any ideas?
@NancyTaylor7 жыл бұрын
Hmmmm! Andrea, I would check the night before! That is when I go over my trial class materials because they often change, especially if a student cancels and a new student is put in his/her place! Once you have done a couple you will be able to relax a little more! Good luck and happy teaching!

Thanks for this video Nancy! I had my first trial class last night! The kid ended up signin up! :D ...I was quite surprised because I felt I had no clue what I was doing, but regardless, we just had FUN and I felt that the material was the appropriate level so I just went with it! My question for you is....is there a way to see the trial class slides/material BEFORE class? This was a short-notice trial so maybe that is why I did not have access to the PPT beforehand? I kind of just winged it, but he signed up! That is the point of the trial right? ...to have fun, assess their level, and hopefully get them to sign up!? Thanks!

Nope. You can only look over them in the classroom function. It is helpful to take notes of the potential classes you may teach so that you are ready to go if you have to move up or down a level. You will learn the most frequently used classes quickly like, 2-4:)

Wow! I love your videos, Nancy! I'm wrapping up my last semester as an undergrad and would LOVE to start working for VIPKID after I graduate in May! When would you suggest I apply in order to (hopefully) start teaching this summer?

Ginny! Great question!!! They require a bachelors and for you to be a native English speaker so once you have the certificate I would apply right away! It takes 1-2 months to build a solid schedule so the sooner the better. You could always give it a try in March or April!

Hi Nancy! You are AWESOME! I am a new Vipkid teacher and my firts class is tomorrow, it's trial class. The Ppt is level 2 unit 1, so my question is , what do I have to do if the student is below this ppt.? Because I believe this is the lowest level, so , do I have to keep going in this ppt until the end of it?
@NancyTaylor7 жыл бұрын
That is the lowest and if they have a test then it would show them as a level if they were lower. You can adjust the lesson to really fit any level if you need to. It is very simple! Good luck! You will teach a lot of 2-1 trial classes when starting:)
@thebeccad147 жыл бұрын
Hi Nancy! I've taught two trial classes so far, and have two more coming up. This was SO helpful because I thought I had to make it through the entire powerpoint in the 25 minutes. I was wondering though, when you switch to different lessons based on the difficulty, do you have a specific order you switch in, or just try and guess based on what you believe the student's level is? Thank you!
@NancyTaylor7 жыл бұрын
Rebecca! Trial classes will get easier and easier the more you teach. I look at the directions on the bottom and they state if student.... go to ..... After I had taught so many I was able to adjust based off of understanding of the student's abilities. It isn't a huge deal unless the student has a test before, then you truly do need to place them to the best of your ability. Keep up the great work!

@NancyTaylor7 жыл бұрын
Amy! Great question. We are required to teach the lessons that are provided because you don't see the same student necessarily each time. The curriculum is interactive, fun and very effective. There may be a couple slides that I adjust and teach a different way to help the student understand, but overall I love it. You can add in your own reward system, props and fast finisher games, but the bulk of the content has to be the PPT they provide. Let me know if you have any other questions!

Hey Nancy! I've been following your videos as I am new to VIPkid. I know that you have Ava and have taught while she is young. What do you do if she wakes up early? I have a 7 month old and I nurse him - so I was planning to teach from 5-7am. He usually wakes up at 7:00-7:30am. This morning he woke up at 5:45 which is more rare but in these cases, what would you recommend doing? My husband would be home but because I nurse him, I would need to feed him.

Kristina! Great question. I just had a babe (2 months old), and I trained him on the bottle for this reason, but if your babe only nurses then you do what you have to do if hubby can't keep her entertained with snacks and such while mom teaches. Here is my video on this! Hope it helps! kzbin.info/www/bejne/mGWknaSiarmHgNU&index=59&list=PLjwtK5OOazwznnrCqI0C1CAST2JmZc-Qf

Is it difficult to switch slides in a Trial class if the student has a PPT that is too difficult? I have my first trial class booked so I haven't had the opportunity to try switching it yet.
@NancyTaylor6 жыл бұрын
No! you just go to docs and click the new ppt that you want. Super simple:)

Hi Nancy. I am a new teacher and I am teaching trial classes this week. when i go to open the materials for the classes so i can prep the lesson is exactly the same for all three students even though it is listed differently. for example one child is listed to do the class level2 unit 1 and another level3 unit 1 but the materials are both for the Me Myself and I class. can you advise? thank you!
@NancyTaylor7 жыл бұрын
They should be different in a 3-1 and 2-1. I would create a ticket and ask VIPKID. If you don't see it change before you teach the class do the best that you can with what you have. You want to make sure that the student has fun and gets a feel for what class is like in VIPKID! Good luck!

Hi Nancy! I am trying to decide if VIPKID is right for me. Let me start with...I am NOT a morning person, so I am wondering if you (or anyone you know) has had any success scheduling outside of peak times. When I plot out the times I would like to be available, it totals about 9 hours per week within peak times. For financial reasons, I would like to teach more classes than that. Do you think anyone would schedule me during the non-peak times 5pm-1am central time (6am-2pm Bejing)? Thanks in advance for your input!
@NancyTaylor7 жыл бұрын
April! You are not the only one! I am 100% a morning person, but I know many other teachers who are not. If I'm calculating correctly then 5pm-1am CT is 8am-4pm Beijing time, and I know of teachers that book during those times. My suggestion would be to open the 9 hours that are peak times and then open up your evenings. It is summer soon and many students will not have school. This will allow you to build a schedule in the evening times (Their morning times). I also know that many students are home schooled etc. that would continue booking you during those evening slots when school starts back up! Hope this helps! GOOO VIPKID:) hehe!

How do you Know Nancy if they've had a computer test or not?

Click on "info" and it will have it listed and the level. If they haven't it will say, "No computer test use.... "

How do I go about teaching trial classes? Do I make a fresh desk ticket and ask? Or will they reach out to me and ask? Also, what is the link of the teacher that only teaches trail classes?-Thanks
@NancyTaylor8 жыл бұрын
Within the first few weeks they will reach out to you, but making a ticket could get the ball rolling a little quicker! On Freshdesk under "Classroom Ideas" you will see a subcategory "Trial Class Tips & Tricks." I saw the video linked there awhile back! I don't have the exact link anymore! Best of luck!!!

how do you switch lessons during a trial if you know that it is too easy or too hard for a student?? thanks
@NancyTaylor7 жыл бұрын
The lessons are all there and you just click on "Docs" and switch it up or down. It helps once you understand how they are listed!
@tabithaschumaker70317 жыл бұрын
You mentioned several times about switching lessons. How do you do this? Did I miss ready something?
@NancyTaylor7 жыл бұрын
You just go to the upload just like you did when you initially uploaded the lesson. There is a whole list of videos there:)

So the kids see you switching
@NancyTaylor7 жыл бұрын
No, They just see a new slide on the screen when you switch it. Often they never notice.

Thank you so much Nancy! My first class ever tomorrow and it's as trial class. Ahhhh!! VIPKid gives $2 incentive to start and finish on time, does that mean we have to get through all the slides or just start and finish the class on time? Obviously getting a repeat student from the trial class is the most important thing, but do we as teachers have to sacrifice our incentives to do it?
@NancyTaylor8 жыл бұрын
Katie! Hope that your trial class went well. I have never heard of the incentive for starting and finishing on time. I know that you get an extra dollar per class when you teach a certain amount of classes in the month (I believe it is 45+) and you get an extra dollar when you have a good record with your classes taught. I will have to look into the time incentive. It must be new.. Wish I knew the answer to your question... I would create a ticket on freshdesk and ask to clarify! I would also love to hear the answer so please share!
@katherinekuehnel8797 жыл бұрын
I was told about the $2 incentive to start and finish in time as well, but when I go to my payments, it doesn't show that I earned the incentive. does it show up on your payment record?
@NancyTaylor7 жыл бұрын
On the 6th of the month you will see all incentives added in!
@NancyTaylor7 жыл бұрын
This incentive is new, and I had not idea it existed..... I'll need to research more to find out! Keep me posted if you find an answer. I would assume it is to start and finish on time. I jump from multiple lessons finding the best fit on trial classes so there is no way to assess if I taught "all" of the content.
@katherinekuehnel8797 жыл бұрын
They had definitely told me about a $2 incentive for starting and finishing on time when I interviewed. she said I'd make $10/class. I submitted a ticket bc I was curious why the classes were showing up in payments as $8 instead of $10 and didn't see the $2 anywhere (thanks for letting me know they show on the 6th :) ), anyway the said I misunderstood and we only receive $1 for that incentive. idk...totally confused and figuring things out but that's ok:)

how do i know if i am teaching a trail class? i want to leave early when they dont show up.
@NancyTaylor7 жыл бұрын
It will say T rather than MC (Major Course). I open up another window and refresh it on the schedule because it will say "finished" if they aren't going to show.

So please tell me how you draw straight lines with your mouse? Mine are all over the place 😂
@NancyTaylor8 жыл бұрын
Kila! Hahaha! I actually have no idea! Sometimes they are straight and sometimes..... not so much. I guess when it is just a quick click and draw they are straighter. I don't have an actual mouse, but use the pad on my mac laptop. I have seen students do straight lines and I believe it is because they right click when they draw (could be totally wrong, but what do you have to lose)! Happy teaching!

I️ have a random question! For trials, or really any student no shows, do you keep your camera on while you wait for the student or do you only open the camera if the student comes?
@NancyTaylor7 жыл бұрын
I only open the camera if the students comes (I listen with my headphones and check the screen and refresh frequently). I'm usually typing feedback on another tab for previous classes or eating food:) hehehe!
@MelissasFamBam7 жыл бұрын
Oh that is so good to hear. Lol My first no show I sat there smiling at my camera for the 15 minutes (it was a trial class). I felt ridiculous lol.

Looking for some encouragement... Just got a teacher no show :( what has been your experience with this? Does it impact bookings very much? Does 2 no shows decrease my chance of renewing my contract?
@NancyTaylor6 жыл бұрын
Don't stress! I was so sad when I got my first teacher no show. It didn't affect my schedule, and I haven't gotten one for years because you reset your internal clock and get a schedule down. Then no shows happen a lot less! No stress!
