These videos are AMAZING!!! I have my interview and demo class tonight and I've been *pouring* over them all weekend. Thankfully I have a pretty firm background in education and a five year old (whose room I'm raiding for props) so I'm feeling pretty good, but I can't even begin to tell you how much these have helped. THANK YOU!!!!

Thank you so much for sharing! It's a little bit late for me to check out your videos. They are all so great!!! I'm applying for a part-time online English teacher; however, I'm not that experienced since it's my first time to teach kids and to teach Englis online. I've had two probations (I need to pass 3 unpaid probations before being hired) before watching your videos, and the suggestion I received is that the way I teach is educational, but I'm going to teach 4 to 12 years old children. Therefore, they think I should make some changes in teaching, such as letting students show what they can do. That's the reason why I bumped into your channel right now, and I think it's beneficial! Thank you again for the video! BTW, my final probation will be on 7/22; hopefully, I can pass all the probations *nervous*

I love the energy and positivity you exude! I am learning so much from your videos. What do you do about staying on time when you have to do so many things to get one of these student types back on track? Especially if you need to pull them back into class two or three (or more) times?
@NancyTaylor7 жыл бұрын
This is something I'm trying to figure out myself. I have mostly regular students, and therefore know there personalities and learning styles very well. This allows me to plan ahead. With some students both low and high I pinpoint the most important slides and activities that follow the lesson objectives and I make sure those are taught. Most of my students get through all of the content, but there are some that can find a tangent on every single slide or that get distracted very easily. I use their tangents as times to have a discussion and real conversation on occasion and I bring my students back with new rewards and the cue, "Can I see you eyes?" "Where is ________?" Hope this helps!! Happy teaching!

Thank you so much for the tips! They were very helpful. Do you have a tip for how to deal with the parent that will just give their child all of the answers during the class instead of allowing the student to do it on his/her own. Thanks!
@NancyTaylor8 жыл бұрын
I totally forgot to do "The Whisperer!" I adjust the management depending on how much the parent is helping out. If it is benefiting the child by helping them stay on task and they are not giving them all of the answers then I allow it. For the parent that tells the student what to say every time. I will emphasize that I want the child to respond. When I ask a question I may say, "Not mom, Timmy answer." If they continue then I always leave feedback that states, "Have Timmy respond to questions on his own in class. This will allow him to practice and show what he has learned." You may need to be even more blunt if the parent continues! Good luck with "The Whisperers!"
@dianar.12208 жыл бұрын
I will do that. Thank you so much!

Love your videos! What do you do if the student will not stand up when you ask them to?
@NancyTaylor5 жыл бұрын
continue to model and show with a doll or puppet. I say, "stand up" and then take a puppet in a sitting position to stand, and then I stand and motion upward with my hands for my student to stand. You do your best, and if they don't get it don't waste too much time. I would leave it in the feedback for the parents, and then be consistent in teaching it and expecting it next time!! heynancytaylor.com

Just wanted to tell you that I love your videos!!! I teach 6th grade science and was wanting to do VIPkid as a side job! I passed my interview and demo class and have mock 1 on Monday!! Can you give any tips on the sit and stand activity. I was looking over their previous vocabulary and wasn't sure how to describe the activity with minimum words. Thanks for any help!
@NancyTaylor7 жыл бұрын
Awesome! I hope that you love it. I taught 6th grade and loved my students! To teach the "Sit or Stand." I will say, "Pig" then take my hand to my ear to have my student repeat. I will then say, "We sit" with a big thumbs up and showing with hands pushing down for sit. I have the student repeat "We sit" by taking my hand to my ear and having them repeat. I then erase the board and circle the pig and say, "Panda?" Hand to ear for the student to repeat. I say, "No" if the student doesn't first with a big X with my arms. The student repeats, "No" by signaling with my hand to my ear. I then say, "We stand" having the student repeat and motioning a thumbs down and standing up. This takes a lot of encouragement with your arms to get the student standing. You'll notice that Ididn't say a lot of words, but used a lot of TPR and modeled while having the student speaking 50% during my explanation. Then when I circle the next word and say a word for it I will use a lot of TPR to help the student know to sit or stand. You can ask, "What is it?" if you say the wrong word.

I love your videos, truly adore you ❤️and I have found them to be extremely helpful. I have a question, what do you do for extreme cases? I have a student who has gone from distracted to not going do it. No how, no way. Yelling "no, no, no!" Or choosing to repeat one word I said, over and over. And actually turning to camera away. I have suggested adult supervision, but was curious how you would handle it.
@NancyTaylor7 жыл бұрын
I state this to the parents in the feedback. I sometimes will ask if they can find their parent to come join (which if they are smart they won't) hahaha! You just do your best, find their interest and reward their good behavior. It is only 25 minutes and make sure you are honest in the feedback so that the parents know!

When I first started I didn't either. My students that I see daily or several times a week know how class is run and we always start with how their day was, how school was, etc. They love that time to share & I love to get to know them more! With new students it is quicker and not as in depth because it does take more time to cover all of the content.. Hope this helps!!! Happy teaching:)

Nancy you are awesome :) Today I had problems connecting with a trial student. The first slide was a song. He was shy and told me he didn't want to sing. Totally understandable, class can be a little overwhelming, especially for first timers. So I sang and he listened. A couple slides later was a charades game slide. I did my best monkey and elephant impersonation. lol. He guessed correctly but didn't seem impressed. When I asked him to act, he didn't want to. I was trying to make a fun and relaxing environment but he was such a serious student. Any tips on how to connect with the serious students? Thank you! Heather (not sure why my husband's name is showing).
@NancyTaylor7 жыл бұрын
Heather! Great question. I've had a couple of these and you feel silly on the other end. If they are intermediate/advanced I will ask them questions to get to know them and let them talk and feel comfortable. For the beginning students I will ask, "Do you like to (sing/dance) _____?" and if they just stare then I'll move on and try to find something they are interested in. It may be a toy that I have (legos etc.) or a familiar Disney character. Sometimes they never crack a smile and that is fine. It doesn't mean they didn't like class. Some are just shy! Keep it up!

Hey there Nancy. Love your videos...thank you! I am thinking about applying to VIPKID. I've been studying up and researching to prepare myself. I was wondering about the TRP. Specifically the one where you want them to talk (cupping your ear). Do the kids already know this or is it something you explain in the beginning? If so, how do you explain it to them?
@NancyTaylor6 жыл бұрын
I just model the action while I repeat what I said to model for the student what to do. If they don't get it you can grab a puppet and show them how the puppet repeats you when you cup your ear! Puppets are the best for modeling what you want the student to do!! Good luck! Shoot me an email if you need a referring teacher! nancytaylor6262@gmail.com

Hi Nancy, In my mock 1, my "student" kept drawing funny images on the slides--a person riding the panda like a horse, etc. How would I handle that situation in the real online classroom?
@NancyTaylor7 жыл бұрын
Great question Jennifer! Usually this happens when the student is bored. I'm going too slow or not having them speak enough. I mix up the pace by having them play copy me ("Touch your head" "Wiggle your arms") Then if it happens again after a quick refocus I will ignore and erase it. If it persist then I will scribble and do a sad face and take away a star to show that I don't want them to do that. If your student loves drawing on the whiteboard include it in the lesson. Say, "Draw a......" and keep it centered around the lesson objectives. Hope this helps! Happy teaching!

Yeah! A Mike's Home warm up for your sleepy students would help a lot! Use the TPR of my warm up Peel banana ;) They'll love it! I admire your work coz I wouldn't be able to stay sit on my chair teaching kids! I'm like a child; I got ants in my pants! ;)

emergency question, i have 2 assessments tonight and never got the google drive, i wrote you a message. I am trying to get the rubrics! thanks!!

Kimberly Ann The rubrics are in the classroom feedback page. When you go into class, click on feedback and Wahlah! I usually fill out any missed answers in my notebook (questions are on each ppt page in the teacher notes) and then fill out the feedback afterwards from my notes! Have fun!!!

Hi, I have an interview tomorrow evening and I was wondering what type of clothing did you wear?
@NancyTaylor8 жыл бұрын
Congrats! Fingers crossed that it goes well! I wore a nice shirt that was business casual as if I were going in to teach in the mainstream classroom. They require an orange shirt once you start teaching, so if you already have a nice orange shirt you could always wear that! Good luck!

Nancy Taylor Thanks for writing back. interview went well and now I am preparing for practicum. Hey I have another question. Can I teach using an ipad or Android tablet? I have looked through their Q&A and couldn't find an answer.

here is another question. Do you use a camera other than you computer camera? if so, what kind do you use?
@NancyTaylor8 жыл бұрын
Britney Tracy That is a great question. I have never heard of a teacher using an iPad or tablet. The students use them all of the time. Wish I knew the answer. I would create a ticket and ask before teaching on one just in case!

Britney Tracy when teaching I use my MacBook's built in camera. For my KZbin videos I film with the Canon Powershot G7x👍

It's easier to manage only one child. I got 14 students to teach every day and it's exhausting because I couldn't keep an eye on every student. Teaching online is really hard. I really need this covid19 to be over so so that I can teach them directly in class.

I have a video coming out about engaging with a larger class on zoom. I hope it helps you out. Teaching online has such a learning curve, but teaching a large group can be exhausting, but it doesn't have to be boring and frustrating. It can be amazing and fun!! I'm cheering for you!!! Such a difficult year for many, but there is always a bright side!:)

It sounds like sometimes you are not able to through the entire lesson because you have to get their attention.

It is rare that we have to skip slides, and it is usually with my advanced students who are able to talk fluently and answer with extensive detail, connections and stories. There is a lot of review throughout the lesson so it is important to be familiar with the lesson so that you cover each topic if you do have to skip slides. For my distracted students it is a huge energy exchange, but they cover the content and have fun!!! Happy teaching!

Lol, few things are more annoying than a teacher that talks to adults the same way she talk to kids. I get it that you're used to it, but come on...
