I had a teacher my JUNIOR YEAR of high school who chose a student or two of the day every day and on your day you got a marble. She always told us "I love you and you're special" and to this day when I see her at a store she will tell me that! But 16/17 year olds got excited about marbles lol Side note, I love watching your videos! You have such an incredible personality, contagious energy, and beautiful babies! :)

Hey Allison and/or Nancy! I submitted my application and they accepted it. But when I go to the next page about the steps that need to be done to become a teacher it doesn't give me the option of booking an interview... are they only doing recorded demo interviews now? THanks

Cheryl! You are a rockstar teaching for 25 years! Your student's are going to love you, and I'm sure you have many supplies and teaching strategies from all of your experience! I love your video, Nancy! It helped me a lot to know what to prepare and your other video (real time teaching your students) helped me to have ideas on how to do TEFL online. I had been teaching in China for 11 years in all levels, adults in the beginning then teens and primary school students down to Kindergarten (2-6 years old) before I decided to return home to Philippines for good just last month. I planned to do online teaching the moment I got back home but I didn't know where and how to start. I realized through your videos that there's not much difference between classroom setting and online teaching. One difference though is that you won't be able to give the rewards "physically" to your students online which would have made them more elated and so encouraged than they already are to come back for more classes haha! I'm glad to know that reward system works for online teaching too :) You would have made it so well being a teacher in China :) You're awesome! Thanks a lot and God bless you!

A tip you can do to get your camera to focus on an object that is held close to the lens is to place your hand behind the object. That way your camera is not focusing on background images, but rather get confused by a blank canvas (i.e. your hand) and can be redirected to pick up the definition of the object right in front of it. :)) P.S. Love your videos!

Here I am again, commenting! ;) I ended up going to target and got almost all of the same things you have! I got the numbers and letters posters, the map, and some fun finger puppets. Funny story, I grabbed some marbles that I had around the house and used that as an incentive. When I went to pour the marbles in my jar, it totally shattered! I had to recover from shards of glass all over me during my lesson! Lesson learned... must use tougher jar or just do puffy colored balls instead! :) Thanks for all the tips!

Thank you for sharing Nancy, what do you use for sound? Do you use an over the head microphone?

I just use the built in microphone on my canon powershot G7X. That is the camera I shoot all of my videos with:)

Congratulations! You must be in awe with the mustache I was able to grow:) It is easy to have that energy when you look forward to class each day! I really enjoy every day of teaching! I hope that you have the same experience. I teach Mon-Sat 4-7am! So nice having a schedule! Happy teaching!

Hi Nancy! Your videos rock! Thank you for all your helpful tips. I have my first lesson tomorrow. It's a trial lesson too. I have 2 questions and I apologize if it's super obvious-- 1. Is there a way to download the lessons beforehand or is the only way to see the PPT by viewing it in the classroom portal? and, 2. How can I tell if my trial student took a computer test or not? THANK YOU!
@NancyTaylor7 жыл бұрын
Jillian! Good luck tomorrow! Great questions! You cannot download the PPT, but hopefully that is a feature they will have in the future! To see if your student took the test go to the classroom, click on "info" and it will say "No Computer Test" in the middle section or "Test with a level." Hope your class goes well!! Happy teaching

Thank you!! Funny, the info tab was hiding bc my browser won't fully expand. I have lucked out with bookings and now I am nervous to do all of them this weekend haha- But your videos truly help, I love your energy and appreciate your helpful advice. And your baby is soooo precious!! Take care :)

Hi Nancy, You're videos have been very helpful. Thank you so much! I'm happy to say that I applied and was hired. I uploaded all my documents on 1/8/17 and I have already opened up teaching slots on the teacher portal. However, I have not received the activation for freshdesk. It has been 6 days since I uploaded the documents. Is this normal? I have reached out to VIPKid Recruitment team but have not heard back from them regarding my freshdesk account. Do you have any suggestions?
@lourdesmanrique67817 жыл бұрын
Nevermind. I finally got my freshdesk account, after 1 week. I'm excited. I hope I can get bookings. Nothing so far =(

Way to go! Happy dance for starting with VIPKID! You are going to love it. Once you have a trial class certification your slots will start booking with mainly trial classes until you build up your students! Give it 1-2 months and you will be rolling!:) Keep up the great work.

Thanks Debz! I just use a lamp with an LED lightbulb that we got from Costco. They cost a little more but burn brighter, longer, and save energy! Woot, woot! What do you find is the best way to keep a track of notes you may want to refer back to for your next class with the same student, name, age, fav classes etc.? I cannot remember it all in my head. I have tried XL, Outlook online, diary, notebook but I have not found a best fit for me yet. Or am I overthinking it?
@NancyTaylor7 жыл бұрын
Great question! I just fill out the teacher feedback with notes that will help me or another teacher in the next class. At first you are teaching so many different students that it seems impossible to keep track. Once you start having regulars then you will start to know them, and don't even need to take notes because you see them each week, and several times a week. Best of luck! You are going above and beyond!

Hi Nancy! Great videos! I love them! Can I ask, where did you get the duck puppet? I think it may be a bath mitt? I saw one bath mitt duck puppet on Amazon, but yours is much cuter! Also, do you find that one easy to use? I see a lot of reviews on Amazon of different puppets fitting too tightly, one even said it gave her carpal tunnel!
@NancyTaylor7 жыл бұрын
That was from my mom! It is so old and has a lot of character! I'm sure she made it! She is real good at that kind of stuff! Amazon is a great place to find one or you could make your own out of a sock:) hehehe!

Katherine! Thank you! Good luck tomorrow! For my KZbin videos I use the Canon PowerShot G7X. It does have a much clearer image than my webcam. I use my Macbook Pro built in camera for class! Works really good as well!

Hi Nancy! I am having a baby at the end of May (yay!) and I was thinking very strongly of joining VIPKid so I am able to stay home with him. My husband already works for the company and is enjoying it so much! My question for you is: how did you do your time slots in the beginning with your baby being only a few months old? Did she still sleep from 5-7am? Thanks for your help!!
@NancyTaylor7 жыл бұрын
Congratulations Shannon! That is very exciting & how fun to be VIPKID teaching duo! My daughter was 6 months old when I started and she did not sleep always during that time. I first started teaching in blocks of 1 hour at a time to figure out a schedule with her. After a month or so I was able to feed her before my first class and then teach for the 2 hour block! That was our routine until she didn't wake up in the night. Nurse at 4:30, Teach 5-7. If Ava woke up and my hubby was gone she would sit in her swing right by me during class, or even on my lap at times. The kiddos LOVE her. They still ask to see her all of the time. It is very doable and that is what makes it such a great fit for stay-at-home-moms. :) Best of luck!

thats what I'm scared of. what if my child wakes up during the session? my daughter is 5 and sometimes wakes up and looks for me in the home. if she passes by or talks a little in the back would that be bad? obviously, i'd try to do the sessions when dad is home sleeping with the kids.
@shannongreen67797 жыл бұрын
I have been hired for about a week and still don't have any bookings, but I am concerned about the same thing. I think my 5 yr old will be able to understand that mommy is working and she needs to play quietly by herself. In regards to when my new baby is born, that is a whole different story. I would assume that if you can still teach effectively and engage the student, having your child there sporadically would not be an issue.
@fsk7607 жыл бұрын
If your baby by any chance wakes up - is it ok to have her with you during the class session or are there any rules regarding this? I am looking to apply and the hours sound great if you have a baby but just wondering because you never know! Love your videos by the way, making me all excited to apply :)

While I'm up waiting for bookings...where do you get your food props? The only ones we could find weren't very well made, to the point that several would probably not be recognizable on camera.
@NancyTaylor7 жыл бұрын
You rock! I got some at Ikea and some just at Burlington Coat Factory (they are less recognizable). I love the Melissa and Doug foods, but they are pricey in comparison. You can find those at Target etc. You could also try Toys R Us and scope out their kids kitchen sections. They have to have a good selection right?!

would you recommend using an ipad during lessons or even your mock lesson?
@NancyTaylor7 жыл бұрын
You can use an ipad to show images and serve as a visual. I use it to show how to draw on the screen if the student is on an ipad.

Thank you for this! You are wonderful. I had no idea IKEA sells puppets! lol. I still have to get through my interview on Tuesday but it's good to have these tips! I just hope to not have to spend too much money on props, should I get hired.

Hi Nancy - thanks for the great video - it's very helpful. I'm just wondering if your baby ever wakes up crying while you are in the middle of a class...has that been an issue for you?
@NancyTaylor8 жыл бұрын
Shlomo! Thank you and that is a great question. In the beginning she did a lot more and instead of filling out feedback between classes I would check on her! She has joined classes and played/ made the biggest mess of my props on the floor! My students will ask to see her now;) If it is too disruptive I will simply put her back to bed and she will fall back asleep;) Hope this helps!;)
@solomon7771008 жыл бұрын
It does. That would be interesting if my 3 year old woke up and wandered into the class...would that count as an "incident"? I watched the video outlining what not to do during a class (cafe, eating, having people wander onto the screen, etc.) and they didn't bring up the topic of little kids - but judging by the number of teachers who have a little one sleeping nearby I imagine that's one of the most common disruptions...
@NancyTaylor8 жыл бұрын
Yes, I'm sure that is. Your students would probably love to see your 3 year old:) I haven't seen that video, but thanks for the tip! People wandering in the background happens a lot more often on the students' end. It is just easy to have a blank wall and a separate room! Hope you get to share your little one with your students:) Sometimes at the end of class if there is extra time I'll do hide-and-go-seek with my students and they have to find my daughter, Ava. They always want to play this game:) Super fun for all of us:) Happy teaching!

Thank you for your videos - they are very helpful! I just began the process of applying to VIPKid. I'm trying to gather as much intel as I can before going forward! My app was accepted immediately after I sent it saying they were 'impressed' by it - I'm guessing they have an algorithm or something to detect key words in the application that sends you on to the interview stage....Anyway - I was curious, how far are you allowed to go 'off-script' and how do you stay on time while still being personable with your students? Oh! And has your baby ever woken up unexpectedly during a class?? :) Thanks again!
@NancyTaylor7 жыл бұрын
Great questions. I use the Teacher directions to guide what I want to teach on each slide. You can ask extension questions and also simplify depending on the students level. There are overall lesson objectives and sentences that you want to be sure to teach and review for each lesson. You can ask how their day was and what are some of their favorite things to do. You get to know your students really well because it is a one-on-one format. It is the best! My daughter has woken up, more so when she was a baby. I had her in the classroom in a swing at times as well as on the floor beside me. She hasn't woken up for a really long time, and if she does she will get herself back to sleep. If it was a screamo emergency then I would just say, "one minute," take care of her or bring her in and then complete the class giving the time missed at the end. Always make sure they get 25 good minutes;)
