i have recently gotten into collecting and using straight razors...and as with most hobbies, one leads into another...though i was taught at a rather young age the skill, (art rather), of sharpening and honing, it didn't "blow up" until i started collecting straights... i had no idea the amount and variety of sharpening and honing implements! i was literally overwhelmed and blown away with the options available...its been a little over a year now, and though i am far from a master, i do consider myself a rather discerning individual when it comes to whetstones...i do prefer naturals over the synthetics (particularly Belgium coticules, Jnats, and the like) but when it comes to synthetics, ceramics all the way! the sound, smell, feedback, and overall feeling that they display is something that is solely unique to them...in short, they are a dream! if ever there were a perfect whetstone, ceramic is surely a contender! that said, when it comes time to preform maintenance, ceramics can be a nightmare...however, upon finding this channel and your product, i am EXTREMELY interested in trying what you have to offer! they seem to do the exact job that i need done, with as minimal hassle and effort as possible while maintaining peak performance!! though it is hard to tell by the video in the sense of the "hands on" approach, there is no mistaking that the sound produced; it tells me everything i need to rouse intrest as well as to expect the best amd have good faith in this tool! anyway, thank you for sharing your product, i look forward to obtaining one of these wonderful plates to add to my (still functioning) collection!!

I wasn't expecting such a rapid like! I wouldn't consider myself a small business but I am veteran and I sharpen knives for the veteran community as a way to give back. Can the button design cut all of your stones? Including 200 grit?
@NanoHone Жыл бұрын
Sorry for my slow reply. Yes, it will cut all of them and flatten them beautifully. However, the surface it leaves behind on the 70 micron (200) will be a little too smooth. I follow up with the NL-4 to make the surface little rougher.

Mr. Stanley, we met at the Atlanta Bladeshow. I bought one of your honing rods there. I am leaning toward getting one of the button lapping plates, but your website says use from 400 grit up. One of my favorite kitchen stones in the standard Norton double sided 1000/220 water stone. Can I use the button plates on the 220 side even though you recommend 400 grit and up? What is the concern when going below 400?

Would it be worth just getting an nl-10 so I wouldn't really need the nl-4 or nl-5? I have probably every grit stone you sell, but I'm just trying to mitigate the amount of things i need for maintenance. If one plate could do all, great.
@NanoHone3 жыл бұрын
Hi and thank you for your purchases, I wish I could say that the NL-10 would do our whole range of abrasives. It’s just not coarse enough for the NS-200 and NS-400. If I make it coarse enough for those stones, it will leave deep scratches in the very fine particle stones. The same is true for the NL-4, it’s too coarse for the fine stones. On the other hand, the NL-10 leaves a beautiful finish on the fine stones. The NL-4 is also awesome for chamfering all of our stones. For me, it’s really practical to have both. We use that combination everyday to finish all our stones before they ship out

Are the buttons similar to a brazed diamond cup for flattening stone and concrete? And have you thought of smaller, nagura sized, options?
@NanoHone7 жыл бұрын
fervens Sorry it took me a couple of days to think about my reply to you question. After looking at several concrete cutting tools on the net, I think there are some similarities. However, the biggest difference is the speed of the tools and the precision involved. My plates are designed for hand flattening so, they are really slow speed tools by comparison. Also, we are very concerned with flatness. Our plates are flat to +/- 15 microns measured plates are finished. That is a new standard in the market. We will be publishing our measurements on the website very soon.
@fervensmortis7 жыл бұрын
Thaks for the reply. Do you have any long term data on how the plates maintain flatness? A solid diamond button seems a little difficult to flatten
@NanoHone7 жыл бұрын
fervens I will look into what we can publish. I can say that these are very tough buttons that will not change shape easily. I’ve been flattening the soles of hand planes with these plates and haven’t recorded any significant wear. It will be very difficult to wear these plates on conventional waterstones. I am currently testing them on diamond impregnated water stones. This is probably the most difficult stone to flatten. We have special equipment to flatten these plates and if a plate does get worn, we can reflatten the button plates many times because of the thickness of the buttons.
@vincenttai82119987 жыл бұрын
HMS Enterprises if your button plates can flatten those diamond waters ones over and over without significant wear then that would really be something. Id get those stones just because I can keep them flat and then hone some nasty PM steels. I’m saving up for the star patterned one, and a button plate, or maybe just the button. Unfortunately being 19 that’ll take a while. What sort of surface quality would your plates leave on Japanese natural stones? It looks like your plates wouldn’t have that stiction problem or to the degree that Atoma and DMT Plates have, I get so tired of wasting slurry I generate on purpose with a diamond plate because I have to add water to stop the plate from establishing a death grip on my stone. I’m always looking for different sharpening paraphernalia, a rather dangerous habit.

@@fervensmortis I'm starting to get some data now that we've had these plates out of 18 months. I've only had to re flatten two button plates to date for customers. In both cases, they got out flattening very hard and coarse sintered stones. Re flattening required about 3 hours on our loose abrasive single sided lapping machine. It's not quick but it is effective

Hiya there, On your flatness tolerances, are they +/- 15 microns over the whole plate or are they +/- 15 microns per square inch? Thanks!
@NanoHone7 жыл бұрын
Vincent Tai Great question, we are measuring 9 points on each plate. 3 on each end and 3 across the middle. We are recording the location of each measurement and showing it on the inspection certificate that ships with each individual serial number. This is a whole plate spec and every plate is measured.

It seems too me like the swarf off the two button plates was darker than that off the traditional plates. Will the buttons wear down? How will these handle something really coarse like the Shapton 120, Nubatama 150, 120, 60 and 24 grit stones.
@NanoHone7 жыл бұрын
Saddendude I don’t think it’s possible to wear out a button plate on waterstones. It way too tough. I’ve been testing them on resin bond diamond stones and still no wear
@NanoHone7 жыл бұрын
Saddendude I would recommend the NL-8 and NL-10 fort #400 and finer as the plate is #300. The NL-4 is for coarser grit stones. It’s beautiful between #150 and #1000. I haven’t tested it any coarser yet

Looks like a good product. I have to say it does get to me a lil when you talk about about how flat the stone is by spinning it like a top though. No doubt it's flat enough for sharpening stone and you probably know this, but when it spins in the center like top the stone is not flat but convex which is absolutely as expected being that when lapping the top plate wears concave and the bottom plate wears convex. I know it's of absolutely no consequence here, just something about someone telling me how flat something is while spinning a flat plate on top of it doesn't sit right. = ) lol. BTW for anyone wondering when the plates are actually flat they "hinge" or spin 1/3 from apposite end your moving. =)
@NanoHone5 жыл бұрын
Steve just Steve Hi Steve, thank you for watching closely. I agree with you that it will spin easily if the stone surface is high in the middle. I try to mitigate that with my lapping technique. It’s hard to show in the video but, our plates are serialized and individuality measured to less than +\- 25 microns or between 0 and 50 microns of total deviation. When you use the plate. You can really feel to high and low spots. That’s hard to demonstrate without physically using one

The buttons look like they should only be used in a circular motion, as back and forward would have lines of no contact.
@NanoHone5 жыл бұрын
RoboBeaver6 Hi Robo, if the user were to go back and forth in exactly the same track, I can imagine making a set of tracks. However, in practice the buttons are overlapping the last stroke by varying the path. We use button plates everyday here in our factory making stones and have never had any problem with grooves of any kind in our stones. It’s like a freight train for flattening

@NanoHone6 жыл бұрын
David Hartley Hi David, I’ve been testing that thought for a year now. Been flattening 75 an 80 mm wide stones. I really can’t find any difference in the flatness of the stones when I compare to my wider test plates. I am flattening all of our stones before they ship with the NL-5. Usually about 50 stones per session. It’s like a ruler, needs to be longer than the objects being measured. Still I think we will offer a wider version in time

Dont understand the choice of the slim width. Piece of glass or garnet some sic powder seems to work fast and is cheaper and you get it actually flat. Having it slim like that i doubt you can get it really true flat since you have ti wiggle back and forth to the edges and create different hights and low spots.
@NanoHone2 жыл бұрын
Hi, we have been using our “narrow” NL-4 in our factory everyday for 5 years now. We flatten hundreds of stones per week with them. It works because it’s longer than the stones. It’s also easy to hold. It’s very effective at flattening and it’s very clean to use. I know it looks a little unusual but it works great
