Just learned to throw with them during Native American day. I was hooked, this is so cool and now there are even tutorials how to make it. About the tutorial it’s interesting and clear how to make things.

Saw this vid on 3 Rivers Archery Atlatl page. I like the torching. I'd use Birchwood Casey stock finish-several coats makes wood like glass. Thanks.

whenever you use lineseed oil be careful with the oil soaked rag it will spontaneously combust. lay it out flat so it wont build up heat until dry

You are right. We are always very careful with that in our shop. It is a good reminder. Thank you.

Do you guys have a throwing tutorial? The "throw like a ball" analogy when using a stick to propel another stick makes little sense.

I am a newby to this whole thing, making my own tackle and making my own mistakes. When I was a kid, my buddy and I would make spears and throw them by hand. We got pretty good at it. When I started throwing with the atlatl, I tried the 'throw the ball' method to no avail. I never could throw a ball well anyway. Frustrated I threw a couple of darts by hand. The muscle memory came back, and I found I could throw them straight and on target. Then I found that throwing them with the atlatl was exactly the same! Timing, aiming, trajectory allowance, follow through, everything. So... My advice as a complete novice, therefore facing the same challenges as you is to take a few hours to throw your darts by hand from about five yards. when you get the 'feel' of it, try it with the atlatl. It is a sort of shooting motion that is hard to describe. Like a football throw without the spin. Anyway, it worked for me. It was a corner-turning experience. Full disclosure, all I can do is hit the Amazon box more often than I miss it now from ten meters. But I am getting there, and that is how I have done it so far. Hope this helps.
