From an inbetweener on Dragon Ball in the late 80s to an animation director on Super in the mid 2010’s, Naoki Tate has excelled as a unique and charming animator throughout the legacy of Dragon Ball’s animation staff! His earlier is known for its impact and exaggerated artwork such as narrow mouths and chubby hands. It wouldn’t be until GT and Super when his mentor, Masahiro Shimanuki, among other directors would begin to correct his work less and less to the point where his looser style took form. Tate truly stands out among his peers in a production that focuses mostly in the quality of character art, his approach brings a more “soulful” flare to the series. This distinct style is most notable in his later work in 2015 onward with Super where he takes the role of animation director up until the 2018 Broly film. At the end of the day, it’s a shame that Tate does not get enough credit in his efforts to bring more life into Dragon Ball. However despite that, he’s always been a cut above many on the staff as a veteran in the art of movement. Enjoy the video!!
