Our phones are complex devices that leak our location in countless ways.
We explain 3 essential settings for protecting your location data:
- Airplane Mode
- Location Services
- WiFi
We dive into how they work and try to demystify location tracking, hopefully leaving you with a better understanding of how to use these tools in your privacy toolbox.
00:00 Do you know how to stop location tracking?
02:28 Airplane Mode
07:58 Location Services
09:54 WiFi
12:10 Summary
12:39 BLE and Faraday Bags
13:10 Don't throw out your devices
Our phone can be both an ally and inadvertent foe in the modern digital landscape. There are many other settings you can toggle, depending on your apps and operating system, to help decrease how much location data you reveal, and we'll go through these in another video. This can all go a long way to helping you fortify your digital life.

My wife and I were sitting on the couch one night, my phone was by my side, I said, "would you like to get a new livingroom set ?", 2 minutes later I pick up my phone, open it and realized, my phone is listening to me. An ad for livingroom furniture popped up. I'm so sick of these cell phones

So with all this tracking, how is it emergency services are not able to find you. Kidnapped kids, lost hikers or people who have robbed places....
@BudmanPackfan
@BudmanPackfan Ай бұрын
In kidnapping!, the first thing they do is take away devices. Bank robbers figured out long ago not to carry devices. Plus, law enforcement needs to know who actually committed the crimes to locate a specific device. Lastly, most people lost in wilderness are often well outside cellular communication coverage... they still use GPS to get a better idea where to look. Also, batteries die quicker off the grid because your device increases power usage to attempt connecting to even weakest wifi or cellular signal.

Turning off things like WiFi / Bluetooth / Location Services is something I've incorporated into my "leave home" routine. It's pretty second nature now. If I'm ever in a rush and forget to disable them, I feel like I did something wrong xD. I also think that even if people didn't care about the privacy aspects, everyone can appreciate having more battery life. Turning these features off is immensely helpful to battery life, especially with aging batteries. Thanks for all of the great info!

This is why they in uk want everyone to have a election car , so they can track you and that’s why they want to get rid of cash to so they can track you too, using cash , leaving the phone at home and using a petrol car or bicycle, they can only track you by there street camera’s. Tho taking the phone they can track you , by gps and card transactions, and if you got an Electric car, wow then they know where you gone too, and if you have Alexa speaker at home they recording everything your saying and watching where you go, it all sounds like we are living in China? Or in test tube. Tho why do they need to know where we are going or talking to or buying? What is the bigger purpose? @@shellz831 I get that we can CHOOSE to use or not use a product. However, unlike your position that it's fine for them to do as they please on stuff you own, I think we need to return back to you either own that which you buy, or it's completely spelled out what it is that they will collect and sell. I get that where you are, like which cell tower you are at, is not data that you control but when THEY ( mfg'er or provider ) take information from your phone that is not otherwise sent ( needed to complete a call for instance ) should NOT be fair game because they can. If I bought it.... I own it. If I pay for service it doesn't mean that I should have to give up my privacy.

You can't buy or sell without a cellphone, you will be deprived of the information to operate and compete in a free market. And all makers of the hardware and software are invasive. Soon you won't be able to ride the bus, or any car, without business and government knowledge. You won't be able to turn on a light or use your refrigerator without the information leaking. I'm sure even taking a shower can be indirectly tracked by water meter usage and the information sold to business and government. There's no reason why consumers don't have the right to use all of these essential items and put political pressure on the same companies to stop gathering the information. A person who doesn't have water service, electric, cellphone service, trash service,sewer service is generally dead. Inside government run lands they don't take kindly to homeless people who put up tents anywhere and cut the cord (none of the aforementioned tracking services including trash)and go cash based. The homeless get constantly hunted down in my adult experience. That is, if the elements, other homeless people, darwinism predators,lack of hygiene, lack of health care, and lack of food, doesn't first kill them. Ever heard of feedback loops and momentum? You don't have a smartphone and you are destined for a downward feedback loop. Trump paid someone to write a whole book about it, without which, he would never have made it to the Whitehouse or very far for that matter. Without this number, a person can neither buy or cell. The number is to be used in the Right hand or used on the head. And those who choose not to get a number will not have a functional brain (head) because of the lack of information.

Well, there I was on the hunt for this phone and (I could be mistaken) the latest model is the 8 I believe.. Wow that's a lot of money so on I went but the 7a is still very expensive over here. In fact the 6 is still at about 500 euros. I know, my privacy is worth a lot but no phone is worth that kind of money. But that's just me. Insane when you think about it, paying for something that should be yours anyway..our information and privacy I mean. Awesome vid, keep going! Greetings from Netherland

Naomi, thank you for your content. One privacy thing I could do with my other (older) phone is to take out battery while moving the phone. Not many smartphones have that option nowadays - I know. I remember some phones have actual switches to turn off certain features but I can't remember if true power switch is one of them.

hi, I really appreciate your channel and information. Great and helpful content. And yes, it sometimes seems like a little much. 😊There is so much to learn and keep on top off - and as a 65 year old it can sometimes feel a little bit overwhelming to stay current and safe and protected, etc... I do what I can.

Thanks for the info and the work put into it. It's not inconvenient so much as to mystifying as to what is where and how many layers one needs to dig to get to the issue. It looks as though it's pretty much designed to be as difficult as possible to block things off.

Love your videos! I learnt few years ago about the "unlawful tracking, selling data" so I have been practicing these techniques, I also keep my phone in a room I can hear it ring, however, they are listening also, be more muffled in a less active room. Is does become second nature and not an issue because, privacy and safety more important, like you said Naomi, like locking home before we leave. What is concerning is, when I need the service, say WiFi, they are thousands of tracking ready to pounce!! So cat is out of the bag, then!! Sad

Hello Naomi! I just found your station, purely by accident, and am impressed with the information you know and share with us. I have Faraday bags for the phones, but admittedly rarely use them. I fell victim the the curse of relying on that damned phone, just like 95% of the rest of us. Will a VPN help in any way? You also mentioned that our vehicles have SIM cards as well. Do you by any chance know where these would be located and do they still "broadcast" if, for instance, I completely disable the OnStar in my car (unplug power and antenna)? Just wondering. Thank you for all of your valuable information and I look forward to your future video's.

I absolutely want to protect my phone. I am really unhappy with my new phone because it says that I can turn off certain permissions on app settings, but when I tried it warned me my phone wouldn't work. The next time I went to check my permissions all the settings are ghosted and of course, they're all turned back on. So my Samsung 23 Ultra uses my location, my camera, and my microphone for whatever it wants, because I can't turn it off.

I appreciate this. I have been trying to cut off privacy tracking for a while now. It is too invasive. I don’t have a problem turning things off. You did answer my question about faraday bags so thank you. I have been trying to use AAA trip Tim’s for travel opposed to google maps. If you liked the old trip ticks they no longer exist. To get them you have to call and argue with a person after navigating their phone tree ( another complaint of mine) . Next the person gives you detailed instructions on using their map program. Then more arguing ; I don’t have a smart phone so you need to send a paper copy. When I finally received it it was simply cut out sections from their mapping software so not much use when you are driving and alone in the car . Some tech is simply intrusive and and not as good as non tech. Some of the places I travel too the phone gps is simply useless or nonexistent. One pass I travel has nearby and easily seen cell towers but I still lose connection. I still like my maps but reading them seems to be a lost skill.

Thank you for sharing this important information. One small thing I noticed though, is that you advise to turn off Wifi in order to stop the tracking through the probe requests. However, most people will probably just discard this tip, as a phone is not really useful without a network connection, and there is a much less inconvenient way to stop the probing: You can disable just the probe requests, instead of the entire Wifi connectivity. The only thing that breaks from this is connectivity to hidden networks, which most people do not use anyway. Another point is that oftentimes you can still make and receive calls and text messages even in airplane mode, if you are connected to the internet through e.g. Wifi. This vastly improves the practicability of using airplane mode. Of course your cell provider can then track your IP that is used to connect to their servers for this, but you can use a VPN to get around this.

What's the name of the setting to stop the probe requests? I also believe that the phone will do other probing that is not controllable via the OS.

For tracking, going in and turning off the settings in the apps that track you, especially those of Google and Apple, can do more to lock things down at a minimum regular effort, than turning off the functionality of the phone. A-GNSS can be turned off on most phones as well. It is usually under precision location of some sort. There are also settings within the Google account that can turn a lot of this off on that connection.

I'm a phone repair technician, I've never had ANY phone sync its time without a sim card, so that sounded a little odd for me. I'm not sure it's true, at least not here in the EU. Also, turning wifi off is definitely not nearly enough. On android, you need to go into wifi settings and also turn off "wifi scanning always on".

I just turn it on when I want to check messages, mails or do a call. I know ppl cannot reach me all the time. But I even don't want to be reachable all the time. They should send me messages instead and I answer on a time I'm convience with.

Automation, like that found in Shortcuts on iOS, can be set up to toggle WiFi and Bluetooth upon an event such as leaving the home location. It also integrates with Apple Watch. Still, it's not perfect. To toggle WiFi requires actively acknowledging the notification and pressing "Run". If you disable Bluetooth, you've removed integration with your car's infotainment system and Apple Watch. As you've mentioned in a prior video, Apple doesn't make it easy to forget WiFi networks unless you're actually near it. Automation can help here too. Automation can see all the networks that aren't forgotten, and can be setup to notify you when you're in proximity. Then, you can forget it. If there are certain locations (e.g., mall) that you want to go dark, you can identify that location to the automation and it will be triggered upon arrival and/or leaving that location.
