Naples Italy Traffic - Left turn yield (or not!) intersection

Traffic in Naples Italy is absolutely crazy insane. If there are any rules, they sure don't seem to be enforced. This is video from a "left turn yield" intersection -- which really works out to be much more of a "left turn go" intersection. They don't yield in Naples, they just go!

I lived in Naples for 5 years - the secret is to not make eye contact or look at the other driver - by doing so, you acknowledge that you see them, which means THEY have the right of way. It's very strange - but, I'm back in CA now and miss driving in Naples. It is a dance - once you learn it, you never want to return to your old ways!

I'm from the US and have driven all over Italy including Rome and Naples, and I'm going back again this summer. It's true the farther south in Italy you go the wilder the traffic seems to get, but you just have to get into the spirit of it and drive like the natives. If you have an opening, GO. No one is going to just let you in. Also, whomever's front bumper is ahead is the one who has the right of way, so TAKE IT. Don't be shy. Keep pushing forward. It all seems a bit crazy at first but once you get into the spirit of it, it's actually fun. I still remember what one American tour book said about driving in Rome back in the '90s - "Traffic is Rome is like rocks in an avalanche".

I was in Napoli in 89 and I loved the city, its food, culture and people. However, I never complained about drivers in the US again. I used to think DC's drivers were bad but it's nothing like Naples, nothing scarier than walking across the street.

+John Sparks YES! We just got back after spending a few days there. People gave us the "wow-your brave" eyes when they learned dared to rent a care and drive ourselves. We were like...whatevs, we live in Paris (from California) and drive in the organized chaos, we can handle anything....or not.....holy balls on fire. Thankfully, my husband loves challenges and had a fucking blast, while my daughter and I just hung on for dear life.

LOL! You are not joking! Never tell a cabbie in Napoli to get you somewhere as fast as possible because he will. You will find your faith! I now understand why the Italians are so religious.

The Russians drive the same way just at double speed. The Italians however, know and use the brake pedal which makes it all work.

Russians didn't drive the same way. I live in Russia and I rarely see anyone failing to yield cars while making left turn. Also we yield to pedestrians, expecially recent times. But we like to drive fast, that't true.

There are a few traffic signals in Naples, but many of the intersections are traffic circles. This particular intersection does have a signal, but the concept of the "right turn arrow" is used very rarely in Naples. It's mostly just the bravest car goes first :)

Hmm I live in Como (Northern Italy) and there’s only one example of such an intersection in the central part of the city. The thing is, Italians prefer roundabouts, and not many of them are used to intersections like these where you need to know yielding rules. (It’s not like in the US, where everyone has to know them!) I drive through that intersection every day, and there’s almost always someone who doesn’t give way at all. So yeah, to all those who say that Northern Italians know how to do it: that’s just not true. Although it’s not as chaotic as shown in this video.

Well, there are normal laws. In all Southern Italy they are not enforced. In Northern Italy this used to be the same, however there the cities have a bit more money to spend, and they thought this: "People ignore trafic laws, we have money. We put speed cameras and trafic light cameras everywhere, we make profit!" Since that people started to be more careful in the North because they don't want to get fined.
