Thanks for the review. Not sure if you’ve seen Ridley Scott’s previous movie set in the Napoleonic era, The Duellists(1977)? Excellent movie and very interesting to also watch the making of it.

I should also add that there is the 1970 movie titled Waterloo starring Rod Steiger as Napoleon and Christopher Plummer as Wellington. Directed by the famous Russian director Sergei Bondarchuk. Definitely worth watching and available on KZbin.

I haven't seen the movie but what irks me is that from the preview one would have no clue that this film is to be "funny". It's presented as an "epic" historical movie, one that will tread Napoleon's path across Europe. That it will take seriously the utter horror that he inflicted upon Europe and his own people. A man who thought the 100,000 young men who reached military age in France each year were resources to be used. Fine if you want to make a laugh out loud comedy, that's fine. But call it Carry on Napoleon or Napoleon Conquers Josephine or something. To be honest though, I doubt I'd go to see it after having sat through Prometheus, a film also by Scott that plummeted the very depths of shit. So maybe I shouldn't comment on this at all! :)

It's not like other monarchs thought differently. He ws just better at defending the Revolution, France and at war. It reached a point in which he had to just project power and grab it across Europe because at any given time new coalisions would form just to destroy his project. The whole "Napoleon the tyrant" description that Anglo-Saxon media often uses is very inaccurate, since it's thanks to him if illuminism spread, even to the British.

Your history knowledge is lacking. Napoleon was the good guy. War was declared on France he defended his country.

@@rudolphschmidt313 Bullshit, that's highly debatable that he was ever a "good guy." Give me a break. All I do is read history so fuck off.

Most Americans have little knowledge of the Revolution, and the period after it that Napoleon dominated. I barely was taught any of it even in the tons of history classes I took in college. Why, i dunno. Then again they don't teach Vietnam, or the Native American history or anything like that in US schools. I've already been reading up on Napoleon yet again online the past month, just to get a refresher. I'm going to read Andrew Robinson's book on Napoleon, because that may be the only way to really get a full picture of the man and his campaigns. I don't understand how the French went from the Revolution, to wanting a Dictator and totalitarian military Emperor. It makes no sense. All Napoleon did for France was lose millions of lives, and then conquer areas only to then lose it all. He might have been a brilliant tactician early on, but by 1813 I think Nappy was doing too much snuff or whatever. He lost it! And maybe the movie reflects that, I dunno yet. Nobody liked the French, let's face it, a bunch of arrogant motherfuckers if ever there were arrogant MFs. Only Germany comes in a close second for that, which they upped the ante on for WWII after getting their arses kicked for them in WW I. Napoleon marches on Russia..takes Moscow....for five seconds..then he gets routed right back to France! Not a successful conqueror. IF he had been, France would have controlled all of Europe and then Eastern Europe too. Which never happened. Same with Germany in WWII: conquered a few shitey countries, killed millions, then got their arses kicked by the Russians and Allieds! And France just caved in by then, a pale lame shadow of the France of 1805 to 1815. And the Nazis got their asses kicked yet again by the Russians just as the Russians had kicked Napoleon's sorry ass in his invasion of Russia. A lot of this man's story is MYTH and bullshit. Then again, a lot of history is bullshit. Or the telling of it is. Napoleon was sent packing to some shitty island when the French wankers got sick and tired of him, and had no further use for him. That is the truth.

I can't say i'm excited for a napoleon biopic if it's praised for it's comedy. I mean sure, there are some funny quotes from the era, but still....sounds like a miss.

I read most of the RT critic reviews today, so far my enthusiasm has suffered a bit. Most were positive, but a few critics thought it was a real miss, the only great bits being the battles, etc. Many thought the dramatic moments were not great, and unintentionally funny. Everyone thought the film played as if it had tons of good material cut out of it.
