One of the things I really appreciate about Napoleon Dynamite is it's set in a quirky world I don't know much about. There are a seemingly endless amount of movies set in California (multiple cities), New York and Chicago. But Idaho? This is such a fresh view on the real America. Especially for someone who's never been to the US like me. The other thing is, it's hard to make out when it was set. It was released in 2004 which is a long time ago now. But despite that, it still seems to be based on a time a little earlier than that. Internet chat rooms, CRT TVs / pop up VHS recorder, corded phones etc. It's possible the Dynamite family was just a bit behind themselves - I don't know. I enjoy the mystery. And then finally, I like how even the popular kids like Summer and Don are still pretty low key and conservative. It's just such a unique movie and I enjoy in on many levels.

That plain house is awesome. And the paneling. Nice!
@JoyP19983 ай бұрын
My husband and I tried to figure that out at first. Is it set in the 80s or are they just way behind? The Backstreet Boys song gives it away, but it's still fun to watch.

I suppose Napoleon’s family was on a limited budget. So, they would hang onto obsolete technology. I recall my family still using rabbit ear antennae in the mid eighties. Then we switched to cable television.
@OldAussieAds3 ай бұрын
@@Stellaluna88 Yeah good point. Our family used rabbit ear antennae until the mid 90s and had a black and white TV through most of the 80s. We didn't get our first VCR until the late 80s (similar top load style to the Dynamite family) and didn't upgrade to front load until many years later. Our remote control actually had a long cord - it wasn't wireless. Despite all that though, our family somehow managed to scrape together the money to buy a Mac Plus in 1989, complete with hard drive and Brother dot matrix printer. So while we were behind in some areas, we were ahead in others. This was the era where many of my friends has 8-bit computers or no computer at all. The Mac wasn't the best games machine but it was miles ahead for doing school work.
@Stellaluna883 ай бұрын
@@OldAussieAds Our first VCR was a Sony Beta. It had a tethered remote control. Most of the video stores had the choice of Beta or VHS. I used to tape programs off of Nick At Nite and MTV. We thought it was the high life back then.
