A dignitary is a person of high rank or importance, often formally representing a country or organisation. Messengers on horseback were used to carry messages. Moscow is colder on average than Chicago, but not by very much.

Personally, I feel that Napoleon was his own worst enemy; his biggest mistake in the invasion of Russia was to even try to invade Russia in the first place. The Swedish and Ottomans tried to before him, and the Germans tried to a century after Napoleon. All failed. And similarly to Germany, Napoleon never recovered from the disastrous failed campaign in Russia; from this point, everything he did was to try to delay the inevitable fall of his empire.

You may think of -4 as "not so bad", but enjoy such weather for weeks outside without much heat from fire(you're marching as fast as you can - so there's not that much time to camp outside of nights) and usually tolerable -4 becomes much, much worse. You drink cold water, you breath cold air, you march against cold wind. You will become cold and miserable really fast.

I think that everyone is missing one detail. Burning of Moscow was carried on by criminals, released from prisons acting on government orders. Even criminals were so against the Napoleon that they stayed and when captured were shot. That shows the resolve and unity of people like nothing else. If antisocial people are acting with society thats something to marvel at.

Moscow... how many strains are fusing in that one sound, for Russian hearts! what store of riches it imparts! Here stands, with shady park surrounded, Petrovsky Castle; and the fame in which so lately it abounded rings proudly in that sombre name. Napoleon here, intoxicated with recent fortune, vainly waited till Moscow, meekly on its knees, gave up the ancient Kremlin-keys: but no, my Moscow never stumbled nor crawled in suppliant attire. No feast, no welcome-gifts -- with fire the impatient conqueror was humbled! From here, deep-sunk in pensive woe, he gazed out on the threatening glow...

As others have said, -4C/25F might not seem too bad. But try marching in it for weeks in an early 19th century uniform, and uniform designed for summer at that, perpetually hungry (which means your energy reserves are low, thus your body struggles to produce heat) and exhausted. You are quick marching back to Smolensk as quick as possible before the Russians decide to encircle you, meaning you have virtually no time to make camp and get warm by a campfire. The Russian winters are notoriously bitter. Frostbite was devastating to Napoleon's forces, in those days Frostbite could easily lead to Gangrene, a horrible condition that was practically a death sentence if you didn't have the limb amputated before it set in and became Septicaemia.

This video has no end or result of the war. A week after Napoleon's arrival in Paris, the Russian troops of the Cossacks entered Paris with a grandiose victory. They did not loot and did not kill anyone, they simply drove gracefully into Paris on horses. Parisians greeted them with flowers. In this way, Russia put an end to the power of Napoleon. This is the most important part of the history of the victory of the Russian army against Napoleon. But in Western propaganda you will never see or hear this, in the free west the censors are forbidden to talk about it or publish it. There is a way out of this situation. It's very simple, ask for the documentation in the archive, they will provide you with all the documented facts of that time.

There was a moment his fellow Cossack came to him with the prisoner - A french officer who is looking very close to the Emperor Napoleon: "Your Excellency, the War is over! It's over, your Excellency! You have an honour to see the Emperor of France - Napoleon Bonaparte!!!" and gives him a seat, giving him drink and food. -"Tell this man, I'm not an Emperor." - "No, your Majesty, - jokes Davydov- today you ARE an Emperor!"😉

When Napoleon went into Russia his plan was to go no further than Smolensk. He thought the Russians would field their army there, have a major and decisive battle and sue for peace. Borodino was a forward assault because the Russians kept withdrawing, going straight at them is like locking horns, they can’t withdraw if you meet them head on. Soldiers of Napoleons army cheered when the Russian cannons started to open fire, they thought that would be it. About 2/3 of Napoleons army was not French, mostly Germans, eastern and Southern Europeans. Most French soldiers were in Spain. There is a museum on the grounds of the battle. Napoleons 1812 Russian Campaign is considered the largest military disaster ever. The novel/ series “War and Peace” takes place in Russia during the Napoleonic Wars. The song in V for Vendetta that’s played when they blow shit up was written to commemorate defeating Napoleon.

Fortunately Russians have never been killers or robbers especially not in such an enlightened age as the 21st century. Think how much Russian suffering could have been spared if the Tsar has just been honest and kept his word to Napoleon. Napoleon really respected the Tsar above all other leaders of Europe ( just see how lightly Russia got off at Tilset compared to Prussia) and was very reluctant to invade.

Napoleon's troops would have been shorter and smaller on the average than present day Europeans. Average height more like 5'8" or less. They became strong through the marching with their heavy packs and weapons, but they would have been quite lean. Strong legs, but lean. Also for the cavalrymen, because a heavy man tires out his horse too soon.

Not even thinking about the number of men dead, the percentage of men killed or captured. Nearly 80%. In any kind of realistic war, those numbers would be unheard of. Possibly in a single battle if a force was willing to die holding a position, but not the overall army in a war!

This is why Napoleon can never be considered the greatest general of all time. I don't care how many battles he won, this was the worst military F-up in recorded history, and yes, he did abandon his troops to return to the safety of Paris, while they were fighting for their lives. The fact that his lickspittle marshals defended that shameful action was only sucking up to the leader. The shame can never be wiped, and it's one of the reasons that Marshal Ney has an enduring legacy and respect even among those nations that fought against him. A real man, and real leader that was recorded pulling young conscripts to safety from the icy ricers, whilst Napoleon was back in his palace. A true soldier, that didn't deserve the firing squad.

So many excuses. Napoleon's army was bad, in summer it was hot, there was no water, in autumn it was autumn, in winter it was winter. I can tell you for sure that the generals are far from stupid, especially the generals who have captured all of Europe. No need to be naive, Napoleon was perfectly ready for the campaign, and in his memoirs, Europeans wrote excuses for their defeat. They came with a sword, and died by the sword, not by the frost. They were killed by Russian soldiers, and not by winter. Or do you seriously believe that during such hostilities, no one is satisfied with intelligence?))) According to the West, all the generals and marshals of the West do not know what warm clothes are. And now I will tell you how it really was. At the beginning of the campaign, the Russian armies were commanded by foreigners and they did not particularly appreciate the Russian soldiers, so the Russian army suffered many losses. Emperor Alexander lost patience and replaced the commander-in-chief with Kutuzov. Second, it was obvious in the theater of operations that there was an order not to engage in protracted battles, but only to simulate a retreat. Even at Borodino, Kutuzov had no intention of defeating Napoleon, although he could well have done it. He backed off probably it was a mistake. But there is one fact - the capital of Moscow was no longer it was specially burned down and left so that Napoleon's army began to loot and plunder the city, so that they would stay there. The Russian marshal knew very well that it was the partisan war that turned out to be most effective against a large army. Therefore, he gave Napoleon an opportunity to stretch his forces, after which the Russians carried out attack after attack. In Russia, they say that it was a partisan war, they simply mowed the entire army of Napoleon out of a blizzard. But brave warriors from Europe always somehow childishly cannot admit that they simply lost and turned out to be weaker. Instead, they wrote in their memoirs that it was all about winter. Of course, even then there was an information war and the French took defeat very painfully, so when they returned, they totally lied that they were not ready)))
