But guys retreat is perfectly okay as long as it leads to a victory, which in Spain it did. But even still, if you both even brought that up it wouldn't matter because Arthur did not leave his troops during his campaign. Napoleon could actually control all Europe without invading Russia, and there was no point to occupy Spain. Spain was a traditional ally of France. Spending most of the resources for Russia and Spain made Napoleon's army weakened and exhausted . So without those two mistakes he could be the great winner of everything.

Wouldn’t say it was just the sea. We had the greatest navy at the time which destroyed Napoleons. You set up to your strengths. It makes sense Britain focusing on the navy since it’s surrounded by water. Napoleon focused his efforts on building armies. 600k troops when he invaded Russia for example.

Napoleon could have turned the tide around after Russia at Leipzig. Napoleon had the chance to capture Tsar Alexander and King Frederick Wilhelm III ending the war. A French Cavalry division spotted a group of enemy outriders who they decided not to pursue. This group consisted of the Tsar and the Prussian King and some of their generals. If a few changes occur, Napoleon could have captured them turning the tables again in favor of a Pyrhhic Victory to an Austerliz like Victory.

Napoleon's war strategy was quite similar to Hitler's. And their failures were nearly identical too. Both of them firmly controlled mainland Europe, but failed to gain naval superiority, and also didn't make sufficient efforts to cut their enemies off from their overseas colonies. They both became impatient and betrayed and invaded Russia prematurely, which got them into multi-front wars, which ended up leading to a rapid downfall. Napoleon took over pretty much all of Europe, but never kicked Britain out of India, nor did they prevent Britain from using the Suez Canal. Hitler similarly took Europe AND North Africa, but never expelled the British from the Mediterranean Sea, which was their artery to the Middle East and India. Hitler and Napoleon would almost certainly have ruled the world had they not been impatient. Both made the mistake of only focusing on Europe, and not control of the seas or foreign colonies. They grew greedy and addicted to conquering massive amounts of land, and couldn't stand the thought of slowing down, even temporarily, to refocus on more important strategies.

There are some small inaccuracies in the video. The first German countries quit the Confederation of the Rhine before the Battle of Leipzig on 16 to 19 October 1813. In March 1813 Mecklenburg-Schwerin and Mecklenburg-Strelitz (located in the north east) quit the Confederation of the Rhine. More importantly the Kingdom of Bavaria (the largest member of the Confederation of the Rhine) joined the allies with the treaty of Ried (signed between Bavaria and Austria) on October the 8th 1813 prior to the battle. Austria guaranteed the Bavarian sovereignty and that in future negotiations it would receive adequate compensation for territories which would be returned to Austria. Bavaria agreed in the treaty to leave the Confederation of the Rhine and declare war on France with the obligation to provide an army of at least 36.000 soldiers for the fight against Napoleon. P.S. During the battle about 4.000 Saxon soldiers and circa 500 cavalry from Württemberg defected from Napoleon to the allies. The commanders of those units did it without orders from their monarchs.

Due to these wins British were able to impose their fleet as dominant in the oceans, a partially anti-British coalition was formed in US’ independence war and probably others would have formed after, but Napoleonic wars spread fear of continental armies throughout Europe and Britain used that to make sure that other powers send their men to die to stop a European continental hegemony, so they by supporting the anti-rival force maintained supremacy. It was smart. But then for partially no reason they decided to sing the triple entente, making the German military paranoia a political possibility for Berlin, which waged war as fast as it could to not fight the Triple Entente at full force, causing WWI and making Britain in debt with US to maintain the Empire created in the previous centuries. This was the beginning of the end of British dominance, in fact they were forced to accept a naval limitation treaty from USA, after other British errors (mainly due to excessive anti-communism) made them not stopping Hitler before 1939 the II WW broke out and British Empire was destroyed. It wasn’t smart

Actually he asked the British Admiral Maitland to take him to Britain because he believed he would be treated fairly there as a prisoner of war. However Parliament had already decided to exile him to St. Helena in the event he surrendered or was captured, which is what happened.

Here is my rant on why France was so dominant in The Middle Ages/Age of Discovery: France is historically one of the most populous countries along the likes of Russia and China. The reason Russia or China haven’t been the cornerstone for many world shifting wars is due to their MASSIVE size. With France they have a huge population in the size a country that is considered moderate. Not to mention they are in Western Europe the most confrontational region on Earth. This allows them to be far more technologically advanced due to war escalating technology by a couple hundred years. In modern history the rest of the world caught up with France and even surpassing them in population and technology.
