Napoleonic Wargame Army Special Request

This is the most blind blowing hobby relating thing I've ever seen! I had the mad idea that at some point I would have enough units to remove the command stands on all but one and make one massive roughly 600 man strong 1 to 1 scale battalion just to see the incredible scale the Napoleonic wars were fought at, admittedly the facing wouldn't match but I just thought it would be such a cool opportunity to get a sence of scale. It just seems amazing that at 1 to 1 you nearly have about 1 battalions worth in the opening shot!

Oh my gawd JP!!! Well as you said mine are now on the blocks, the first British and French Perry models arrived today :) Although I think purely from a space point of view I will be starting at 1/40 ratio

@@JP-ml4zh This is a little cheeky I suppose but I'll ask anyway... Have you any advice on where to start? I'm thinking pick a battle and work on gathering units that were involved in it. I got the impression this is what you did with your initial collection from the early videos. I am really interested in the Penninsula campaign but also appreciate there are plenty of actions from the 100 days and Waterloo, although I'd be looking to other nations then. For now I will just be building so it's not too important I suppose.

@@TonyStrongman I’m not sure there’s an easy answer, I’d say try and build it up in a way you most enjoy..... I know I’m someone who likes getting stuff completed so I will only ever build, prep for painting one unit at a time as I really enjoy “finishing” and find a large pile of unbuild stuff a bit daunting, likewise I aim for a complete unit at a time ie a battalion then a regiment then a division etc.... However being able to do something different also helps perhaps a cavalry unit on the go at the same time. I tend to do a block of line then “reward” myself with an officer etc.... For the army to go for I went for Quatre bras as it’s almost manageable has a nice mix of troops and gives plenty of basic troops to play most scenarios in the future. I think an important thing is who you will play against and finding something that will work with what they have. Being a bit mad of course I always do two armies for whatever period I’m working on and then persuade my mates to use those🙃🙃 but i really have to question whether that’s v sensible🤔😊😊 it’s certainly caused the house to fill up with figures! I think on balance go for something you enjoy as I hope that makes finishing more likely Good luck and hope you enjoy it as much as I have, cheers JP

@@JP-ml4zh Yeah I am that Wargamer who usually gets both sides of a conflict so I have a game that I can play with people that don't. I think we suffer in similar ways :) I'll look into Quatre Bras but don't have any ready scenarios so will investigate and research those actions. I have both the PDFs for G d'A but that covers Vittoria and 100 days so large collections/lots of different units are required. I totally understand painting burnout and have a few Perry blisters of the colonels and division commanders, etc... to treat myself. I have a YT channel from wayback that I used to post RPG stuff on. I was actually inspired to make videos again after watching yours. Technology has certainly moved on apace! Thanks for taking the time to reply, it's been very helpful.

Hi, I really enjoy watching your battle report’s, please keep the Napoleonic ones coming. I have three questions for you, firstly can you tell what size the base’s are for you infantry units, I base in fours but seeing yours in sixes looks better, secondly, what do you use for your artillery horse holder’s, I’ve never seen anyone else do this but it looks really good, and lastly did you make the terrain boards that these figures are on? They are really nice in particular the rock formations. Looking forward to your next report in which General Charlie will once again triumph.

Hi thanks for the comments.....😀😀😀, the boards are nice aren’t they I was lucky enough to pick them up on eBay several years ago, they were commercially made but I’m afraid the company no longer trades. The horse holders are conversions from Perry’s metal Chasseurs with swords removed and wired up for the reigns. I like the six figure grouping they go well as company level units using my 1:20 scaling, each company being on base of 6, I use 45mm width and 40mm depth for infantry and 60mm width and 45mm depth for cavalry bases. Thank you for all your time n painting lost my wife n sold alot of my front rankies all gone ....So started over with Perrys Metal n WarLord figures Front Rank ...Old Glory Witch Really surprised me size n woekmen ship on figures love the movement of them also...all metals now I am Doing Plastics same figures of metal to compare with perrys metal is outstanding Horses.....tops... Still trying Lancers my Fav....Have not done Vitrix yet ....who is tops for Lancers ....out there in Metal or Plastic ..any . One....... Glad you’re up and painting again, I have to say Perry’s are pretty much always my favourite, I find front rank a bit too chunky for me. I do like the Perry lancers, I have them for my line units and Brunswick lancers, I do have my guard lancers from front rank,which I plan to replace at some point. I have also heard that the new Citrix plastics for the guard lancers are brilliant. Thanks JP

That is a huge amount of french. Really great looking army. I have 3rd Corps built but with 1 Battalion per regiment. That is 13 battalions. But I plan on expanding into 2nd Battalions after I finish the project I am doing.

@@JP-ml4zh Quick question, what miniatures do you have to make up your French Line Battalions? Do you have a variety of poses and characters or do you keep the battalion all looking uniformed?

@@hobbywargamer8195 I tend to have the infantry in the March attack pose, but go for as much variety in sculpts as I can, I tend to go for the similar pose for the pragmatic reason that they store easiest like that, when muskets are stretched out in front of the figures they take up much more space.....and I have too many boxes of figures already 🤪😀😀, cheers JP

When’d you start on all this, when you were still Charlie’s age? I started working on my napoleonics about ten years ago but I’m sure I’ll never live long enough to put anything like this together before I move on. Truly AMAZING! Sometimes, if you think about it, could you do some closer shots of the various troops? They always look spectacular in your game videos but they’re all a bit far off and at a much lower altitude than the camera. Thanks for the dog and pony, and horse & buggy, and gun show! I hope you enjoyed it as much as all of us did,I’m sure. Stay safe & stay well.

Thanks, it was great to get everything out and get the videos made up, been collecting and painting for a while, but I am a bit obsessed ( as you can probably see 🙃🙃). I’ve just got some lights so hopefully that will help and perhaps a tripod for the phone next, it’s all just for fun but Charlie and I enjoy making them so well try and keep improving them. It’s been a long haul, but very rewarding, I’ve been collecting Napoleonics for close on forty years, this particular endeavour has been over seven years I think, painting, the odd eBay unit, and just passed my old 15mms to Charlie, who is loving them.
