I grew up in the country in Georgia. This song and the comments really bring back great memories of me and my cousins running around in the woods, climbing trees, making forts, going fishing, throwing rocks on the gravel roads, eating whatever the seasonal fruit right off the trees, watching my granddad and my uncles field dress and smoked hogs in the fall....oh those were simpler times...the good old days. Also poor was poor, regardless of race. The poor whites and blacks seemed to have gotten along great because they had a lot in common.
@JohnFilley-d3r4 ай бұрын
I love your comment bro, sounds exactly like my childhood! I'm from Greenville South Carolina, lived there until I was 12 and then moved to south Alabama for a couple years. It was great growing up in the country, I thank God I was born when and where I was. I can't stand being in big cities. And yeah, in South Carolina it was either black or white, I hardly ever saw any other races (this was the 80s and 90s) but we all got along fine. We were all just friends, brothers, and sisters. Now I live in Texas and partly due to all the media and government dividing everyone, things aren't so good. It's a tragedy. I don't know what's going to end up happening but I hope people can get back to loving one another.
@k.r.truthseeker71564 ай бұрын
@JohnFilley-d3r the media deliberately keeps the races divided. I'm not saying there isn't any racism out there because that would be untrue. But I am saying that race isn't as big a deal in everybody's daily lives as the media would have us all believe. Country life is the best...in my humble opinion. To this day, I hate cities and crowded places in general

growing up broke in a delapidated-ass house in a rural oklahoma town, i remember listening to this song (and entire album) and it helped me feel a lot better about our situation and less ashamed. almost 20 years later and much further from poverty, this song really speaks to me, soothes me and humbles me and makes me proud of my roots in the slums, not ashamed. nappy roots was incredible.

I'm not from KY, but I come from a poor family. I'm currently in college now because of the sacrifices of my family. "Nappy head and all, ain't no changing me", my goal is to be financially stable and acquire knowledge so that I can raise great kids in the future. I won't spoil them though. Spoiled kids don't know the meaning of work. If it's one thing I learned from being poor it's that it made me and my family tougher, stronger, and closer. I love this kind of music. It not only brings good melodies to my ears, but to my heart as well.
