Yes, she was, but she was just doing the job that she must do to be sure that this defendant gets the best representation he can for the best outcome at trial. The difference could be spending 30 years in prison, or spending your last birthday in prison. She is an excellent judge, he can't help himself as a narcissist he has to "defend" his ego. Since this is a trial for a premeditated murder, he never should have opened his mouth, and let his attorney guide him through the entire process.
@Heathen.Deity. Жыл бұрын
I also chuckled when she advised him about the wealth of experience in murder/criminal trials he’d be up against, with him then indicating he’d have sufficient experience by the time he goes to trial. How does he expect to get that experience (or any experience at all for that matter) if he’ll not be doing any other trials until he starts his own?

I’m an attorney who doesn’t practice criminal law. When someone approaches me asking for legal advice on a criminal matter, I quickly tell them they’d likely receive the death penalty for a parking violation if I were to represent them and refer them to someone who has actual, practical experience. Him requesting that she be removed from presiding over his trial is 100% proof positive that she was doing exactly what she needed to. She asked important, relevant, technical questions that were meant to illustrate his lack of knowledge and how damaging he could be to his own case. By responding like a child that felt mommy was being mean and unfair, he showed that her concerns over how his ineptitude would poison the case were valid. A sitting judge cannot hold his hand and walk him through the most serious proceedings that both of them will take part in. And he showed that her holding him to the standards of the court would be seen by him as vicious and biased by him. She knew he would cry foul the moment he improperly objected or whatever, and he would still die in prison all the same. I think he wants it this way, not just because he is a narcissist, but because there is a well known legal axiom "If you are right, argue the facts. If not, argue the process."

Only a narcissist would think that judge was trying to belittle and demean, rather than trying to impress upon the individual what they’ll be facing and the serious consequences that could result from self-representation.
@beautifulsurprise9424 Жыл бұрын
I actually think she’s doing both. I think there’s a way she could have impressed upon him that this was a horrible decision and also perfect the appeal record so that there were no grounds for appeal while at the same time not belittling him but to me she is going out of her way to make him look like an idiot on purpose and it was so satisfying (and also kinda hard) to watch her cut him down at every turn. Perhaps I’m wrong but to me it is purposely being done to make him look like an idiot. She’s asked him certain questions and asked him if he understood and he responds yes your honor. That is enough to perfect the appeal record yet she takes it one step further for her personal enjoyment and the enjoyment of everyone else to get him to explain what it is that he knows. That is beyond what is necessary to prove that he understands something. By sheer fact of him being a practicing attorney alone is enough on appeal for his yes, your honor I understand to prove that he understood what was being asked of him. Making him explain to show that he’s an idiot and in fact didn’t know was just for shits and giggles. She was trying hard to get him to change his mind though, which is definitely what he should have done. He knows this is a terrible idea but his plan is to do exactly what he’s been doing and what Sarah Boone has been doing which is to get another attorney and stall. He knows he’s toast so all he’s going to do is to stall it until it can no longer be stalled and then go to trial, get found guilty and spend the rest of his life in prison. This was definitely hard to watch in some parts but I couldn’t turn it off because he should not have killed that man.

That's actually the only thing she said that I thought was a little unfair and kind of inappropriate. If you go back and listen to the conversation, he *did* answer with "yes" and "no" when appropriate. When he responds with "I understand", he's replying to a statement, not a question, and that's including this particular response. Edit: to clarify, I don't mean unfair as in it's an unfair request; I mean unfair as in he's being admonished for something he didn't do. It was a strange moment. I can't tell if she really thinks he responded inappropriately, was going to respond inappropriately (as another commenter suggested), or was just annoyed by the defendant in general and wanted to bring him down a notch. There's evidence to support the latter: "I know you understand the English language." Again, that's just snarky and inappropriate, and frankly it's unbecoming of a judge, someone whose job is to remain *completely* neutral.

Narcs, Borderlines, and Psychopaths have the vast majority of overlapping symptoms in common. The mental rationale is different. Narcs turn psychopath when they loose enough control or are taken over the brink with their vicious vindictiveness. How DARE someone stand up to them, expose them, do better than them, win fairly against them, get more attention, etc. Perceived threat or wrong when they think they own you, which they do their targets (most often spouse, but not always), for the slightest break for thinking for oneself, having a different opinion, etc is a threat and offense in their mind. For instance, an older narc who can no longer find a new target, will poison his last target four times, sabotage the motherboard and hard-drive as she finds a way to free herself after being set up to be controlled. Yeah, I know.

I find it so funny (and smart) how the judge kept asking him questions to prove he knew nothing- kinda like a mom asking a toddler “do you know you’ll be cold if you go outside without a jacket?” I can only imagine how badly his blood was boiling
@tinameyer7080 Жыл бұрын
Judges are to treat BOTH sides with respect and courtesy. The fact that your comment (and others) perceive the judge as treating him like a toddler or belittling him- actually proves his point. She was trying to embarass him- which is a violation of her ethical cannons. I understand that she needs a full and complete record that he is choosing to represent himself freely, knowingly and voluntarily (to avoid this becoming a grounds for an appeal) but, she is trying to supplant HER judgment/decision for his. She went far beyond her duty, responsibility and authority.
@ZijnShayatanica Жыл бұрын
@@tinameyer7080 How is it "belittling him" to ask if he understands the consequences of his actions? Yes, the OP referenced when you ask a toddler a similar question... Because a toddler would be equally belligerent & certain of their stance. Because a toddler would equally see it as an insult when it is simply a question of their certainty. It's a reflection on him - not the judge - that her assessment of his competence is seen as an attack. It's common in court situations to ensure someone is fit to stand trial... Likewise, someone should be assessed for fitness to represent themself.
@tinameyer7080 Жыл бұрын
@@ZijnShayatanica The Constitutional legal standard is NOT "fitness" to represent oneself. The legal standard is only that the defendant make the CHOICE freely, knowingly and voluntarily. (It is the "knowingly" element that requires the judge to explain the consequences of that choice prior to allowing the self-representation). I did not, at any time suggest the guy isn't a narcissist- he certainly seems to be. That, however, does not negate the fact that the judge went too far in this collequy.
@AmyDee13 Жыл бұрын
@@tinameyer7080 she was nothing but respectful to him. It is literally her job in this situation to thoroughly question Telles and to follow up with more questions. She needs him to understand the gravity of his request and decision to represent himself. Not once was she condescending or belittling to him. His reaction to having his competence in question is the same as if he actually had been belittled and spoken down to because that is his perception through his super fragile ego. His perception and subsequent reaction do not, however, equate to objective fact and reality.
@tinameyer7080 Жыл бұрын
@@AmyDee13 Your statement is factually inaccurate. Her only job is to make sure he is making the choice freely, voluntarily and knowingly. Asking a criminal defendant, ad nauseum in this case, the extent of their legal criminal representative history and experience is NOT relevant in her decision to allow him to self-represent. She was CLEARLY attempting to dissuade him from representing himself- by establishing his lack of competent capacity to do so- in HER opinion. That, however, is not her job.

I’m 21 now going to be 22 in august I’ve been in therapy since 12 but mainly dealing with anxiety not unpacking my trauma until the most recent few years… definitely found out my mom is a narcissist. When I moved out last year, she hated it bc she still wants that control over me so she always talks down on me and my partner and our career and our ambitions etc. So when I told her that she wasn’t being supportive in the proper way, she was so sure of herself she laughed at me and said “I don’t support you!? HA WE need to go to therapy so your therapist knows what you’re doing to me and how you’re manipulating my support into something it’s not… etc” and she went on… I know that some of my mom’s criticisms about me ARE valid but so much is just made up in her head with no factual backing yet she swears it’s the only truth and how she goes about it whether it’s actually something I can do better or just BS, she screams and berates me instead of conversing and troubleshooting like my dad is capable of doing… but now we are going to therapy together on Tuesday so let’s see what happens. Can’t wait for my therapist to put her in her place hopefully. 🙏
