This video answers the question: Can I describe the difference between grandiose and vulnerable narcissism in terms of the fantasies? Stated another way: Are the fantasy-based differences between these two types of narcissism? This is an interesting question because it gets into kind of the complex relationship between grandiose and vulnerable narcissism and narcissistic personality disorder. It also makes the argument that you can, in some sense, distinguish grandiose and vulnerable narcissism by looking at fantasies, although I don't know if that's possible. Throughout my career, I have seen a lot of differences in the fantasies.
NPD narcissistic personality disorder is a diagnosis in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual. It's a cluster B personality disorder. The symptom criteria for that disorder include: grandiose sense of self-importance, fantasies of wealth power and success, feeling special or unique, requiring excessive admiration, sense of entitlement, tending to manipulate other people, a lack of empathy, jealously, and arrogance.
With grandiose narcissism we see characteristics like being extroverted, socially bold, self-confident, having a superficial charm, being resistant to criticism, and being callous and unemotional. Vulnerable narcissism is characterized by shame, anger, aggression, hypersensitivity, a tendency to be introverted, defensive, avoidant, anxious, depressed, socially awkward, and shy.
