Nariva Swamp - A Documentary

Thank you EMA for producing this "Documentary". However there are important salient facts that have been omitted such as : from 1991 to 1999, The Pointe-a-Pierre Wildfowl Trust together with the T&T Field Naturalists fought to save the Nariva Swamp from being totally destroyed by illegal rice farmers, obtaining 12,000 signatures presented to the Government of the day, personally went to Parliament to deliver it. The Pointe-a-Pierre Wildfowl Trust also took the matter of this degradation to the United Nations, New York and to the RAMSAR Convention of Parties in Kushiro, Japan. These initiatives resulted in Trinidad & Tobago becoming a Contracting Party to the RAMSAR Convention in 1993, with the Nariva Swamp being designated T&T''s FIRST RAMSAR Site. This officially provided protection for all the ecosystem services of the Nariva Wetlands.

Just watched a newer video on IFPAM TT and they said the farmers are taking care of the swamp.. I know farming and the environment rarely makes a good couple.. But I could see the people in charge are from the area also.. Hope things actually improved

That might be so, since this piece was produced some time ago... maybe 2012-2013. Damage to the Swamp also incudes seasonal and cyclical factors, such as tides, flooding and fires.
