I think Susan becomes a socialite. She marries quite a few times, but never for very long, and never has any children. She becomes rich, perhaps from lucrative divorces. She is charming and popular, and much admired for her beauty. However, as time goes on she becomes rather like the narratrix of the song "I've Never Been to Me", slowly realizing the shallowness of her life. As she becomes older her dissatisfaction grows and she is haunted by memories of Narnia and of her long-dead siblings. She dreams that she is once again a queen in Narnia with Lucy, Peter and Edmund beside her. And by slow degrees, she realizes that even now Aslan is reaching out to her...

Now here is a massive controversy if there ever was one. There are some... some whom I think haven't read it properly or perhaps haven't read it at all, who claim that Lewis "condemns Susan to hell for wearing nylons and lipstick." Now without going into the other technicalities and nuances of the whole thing, it's always been my understanding that Susan was NOT on that train, or at the station. It's specifically mentioned that their parents were on the train, but not Susan. And given what else we know about her, it's logical to assume that she would have been somewhere other than with her parents. So, if my understanding is right, Susan does not die when the others do. And therefore is not condemned to hell for anything at all, and... I presume, would as you say have her own chance to reconcile with Aslan as she did in Prince Caspian.

if the death of the children in narnia symbolizes redemption, there is no reason to deny susan that redemption by leaving her out of the last battle. önce a king or queen in narnia, always a king or a queen in narnia". remember that? lewis certainly knew of martyrdom in christianity. so why did he assume that susan's adolescence would necessarily lead to her disconnection with narnia? there are many young girls whose adolescence did not lead them so casually to forget their spiritual beliefs.
@ChrisDurban3 жыл бұрын
I think his point was that she did forget her beliefs. I'm sure Aslan always considered her a queen of Narnia, but she forgot who she was. I don't think it's adolescence that lead to her disconnect from Narnia. I believe the picture is she allowed the cares of the world to take root and overtake her faith.

The twist of their deaths had made me completely forget the descriptions of Heaven that they are now experiencing. I *love* your theological explanations on the Chronicles of Narnia series. The first time I heard you explain this novel, it opened my eyes and I understood this book in a new light. I’d always finished The Last Battle with joy, but now I understand why, and I hope and await The Coming King, that I may rejoice fully. There is something that Jewel says that resonates within me “I have come home at last! This is my real country! I belong here. This is the land I have been looking for all my life, though I never knew it till now. The reason why we loved the old Narnia is that it sometimes looked a little like this. … Come further up, come further in!”

The Last Battle is absolutely the Narnia book I like the most - But hey I love Revelation to - I like how it ties all of the books together, that Aslan is a historic and distant person for many in Narnia, but that those who truly follow him come victoriously through to the other side. It is as you say so full of hope! I like "The Boy and the Horse" to! (sorry if it is not how to write that - I am form Denmark). In that book I loved the part when he discovers that Aslan has been with him all the way, even though he felt completely alone. It's been a long time since I last read it, but I think Alsan shows up both as a cat, and that he attacks them like a lion - to help. But it's such a loving way it's described how Aslan (or God in reality / our world) is with you when you cannot see the larger perspective.
@ChrisDurban3 жыл бұрын
I love Revelation too so The Last Battle is one of my favorite books as well! The Horse and His Boy is so great. Like you said, the boy (Shasta) feels so alone and yet we find Aslan has been there all a long, guiding and helping him. It almost the same here in The Last Battle. Aslan feels like he's a distant figure from the past, but he's still here. And those who believed met him and were pulled through to be with him in the new Narnia forever. It's an incredible reminder of the hope we have in Jesus. It may seem like so long ago, yet Jesus is alive and with us. He sees us, and we have such a great hope.

Hi Durban. Just now saw this video, and it is FANTASTIC! Thank you! I am a 66 year old man, and have loved the Narnia books since I was in High School (or maybe college; I forget!) My love for the books was always because of the allegorical way that Lewis shared the Gospel of Christ! I was an Evangelical when I first read them. SEVERAL years later, at age 48, I became an Eastern Orthodox Christian, and have been Orthodox now for 18 years. Since my conversion to Orthodoxy I have not read the series. What I never realized before, until now that I've heard you're incredible analysis, is that the allegory of the Narnia books, ESPECIALLY the Last Battle, are particularly representative of the Orthodox understanding of Theology, especially in regards to the End Times, Final Judgment, etc. Watching your video has really helped me to see that, and has encouraged me to start reading the whole series again, from an Orthodox perspective. If you haven't already done so, I encourage you to check out the Theological beliefs of the Orthodox Church, as I think you would probably also see the same parallels. Thank you again for your video!!

I’ve hear rumors that Lewis was writing a Susan focused story around the time of Joy’s death. I really get upset with Neil Gaiman and those who cannot grasp what is occurring with “the problem of Susan,” not saying you don’t, i suspect we agree. “Once a Kind or Queen of Narnia, always a King or Queen of Narnia,” doesn’t mean you can’t live for a time in rebellion to or intentionally oblivious to God’s will for your life. I watched my own father spend twenty-five years running from God only to be brought back to faith. But for a large part of his life, he knowingly refused to see truth (his words). I suspect Susan was in that time of her life and Lewis was trying to give hope to children whose fellow Christian play fellows had turned away for a time.

Thank you so much for breaking down this book for me. Love Narnia. Bug fan. My 2 favorite characters in the series are: Aslan & Edmund. For favorite book, hard to pick. I'll need to reread all 7 to find out. As a child/teen lion which wardrobe was it. I even had a hard copy of it with my box book set for a time. But I'm older now want to rethink and experience everything over. Today's video watch Clears up lots of confusion and understanding. I skim read this book when read first time at a young age. At age 27 now I'm going to reread my whole set series with more slower pace then before. Only book I was in detail read and did book report on was book#2 lion which & wardrobe.

Asian and Edmund are both such great characters. Reepicheep is also one of my favorites. I hope you enjoy your reread!

Notice that they often say "after all he is not a tame lion" but that is actually not the full of the ancient saying which is "after all he is not a tame lion, but he is good." The lack of the last bit completely changes the character of Aslan as it also would if the first bit was left off-- the full character of Aslan is the union of both. It is that imbalance that feeds the belief of Aslan's cruelty and, therefore, his unity with Tash.

Very good point! I love it when Mr. Beaver says he isn’t safe, but he his good. It’s just like you said, that union showing how good he is.

another thing: i don't think that any movie would be made based on the horse and his boy or the last battle. kalormen is based on a combination of the ancient persians, india and the ottomans, and tash is a combination of a babilonian and a hindu god. i don't think that any studio would take the risk of offending the people of turkey, iran, india or iraq.

Thank you. You have provided the comfort and answer I was petitioning my Almighty God for. I had an NDE three years ago and your description of the characters' transformation meshed with my experience with precise accuracy. I posted the following: If you know anything about Narnia, written by CS Lewis, you will understand this. If you are of a certain mindset, you will be amazed. C.S. Lewis was a brilliant man who was connected to other worlds in ways we could only imagine. The final book in the series, "The Last Battle", is prophetic of current days. There are undeniable connections between Narnia and our world. The fate of Susan is also explained. He even describes the transformation from life in this world to The Other Side precisely as I experienced it. I could actually feel a lot of what he explained in his synopsis. Watch the Chronicles of Narnia and you'll understand.

Hey! I was searching up Narnia on KZbin this week and I came across your channel. I watched your videos about Narnia and I have to agree that it's an awesome series. I've read Narnia twice. All the books are amazing in their own ways! But if I had to pick out it would have to be "The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe". I guess the first is always the best. Although for the movies made by Disney I love Voyage of the Dawn Treader. It doesn't have as much action as in the first two which they have their pros, but this one dives into the characters more. Especially for Lucy, Edmund, Caspian, and Reepicheep who are my favorite characters in the movies. Sorry for the long message and I am not sure if you will see this. I love your take on this series! I read these books, each of them over 50 times and it wasn't until I was in my mid-twenties that I realized that Susan was the only one of them left alive. I always wondered what happened to Susan, I always felt bad for her and wondered if eventually she ever found her way back. These books have been such an important part in my life. Lion the witch and the wardrobe was the first large book that I ever read and my grandparents got me the entire set when I was probably seven or eight years old. It is extremely tattered at this point.
@lalaland7462 жыл бұрын
I just finished the books for the first time in my twenties and I’m upset that I didn’t know about these books when I was younger. And now, after reading The Last Battle, that is the same thought that I have. Susan is the only one alive, probably mourning their deaths, and it’s chilling to know that she may think they never went to Narnia, when in fact they actually did. I’m sad that Lewis did Susan like this, like why???? Why exclude only her and why have it the reason that he said?
@celestebivin16592 жыл бұрын

One of my favorite things this book does is how it deals with the heaviness of the apocalypse in a realistic sense so to speak. It starts out like any other day in Narnia, and slowly things get bad with the Calormene invasion, but the Tashlan thing gives a strange foreboding since it's this big deception and lie that seems like it will permanently fracture the beliefs of the Narnians. But still, times have been bad before right? Nope, cause then there's the seriously disturbing presence of Tash, and then Aslan comes, divides the faithful and the faithless and then completely ends the world. And when you read that part, especially after going through the rest of the series, it's a bit unbelievable, as you read about the stars falling the flood and the sun being blotted out while you think of all your favorite stories and moments that happened here and all the iconic places, all gone just like that.

The part at the end.. about we go through struggles on earth but in the end there is heaven.. compare that to earlier when the ape manipulates people, telling them they'll have to work for the rest of their lives but they are in fact getting paid because Aslan will make everything better... it's very ironic to see the similarities between the two things. Why is one labeled as manipulation but the other labeled as hope?
@ChrisDurban3 жыл бұрын
The ape wanted slaves and power. They weren’t given jobs to get paid, their freedoms were stripped away. With the idea of Tashlan their freedom of religion was taken away. And Tash was a blood thristy god demanding human (or talking beast) sacrifice, and the Calormen would've enforced it. Tash demanded the blood of his servants, but Aslan shed his blood to save Narnia. The ape, to live how he wanted to live, sold out the free lands of the North.

I can't believe that I'm saying this in aid of that awful primate, but in relation to the lion skin retrieval: Shift was right. Apes actually can't swim, they don't have the body fat sufficient to keep them buoyant. Shift would have sunk like a stone and drowned if he'd gone into the water. It's probably the only thing he was right about in the whole story (and likely entirely by accident, as I don't know if he would have known he was physically incapable of swimming!).

Have a few questions for you: The land they call Aslan's country? Is it Orginal land heaven of narnia? Or is heaven & Aslan's country the same place? Narnia that has earthly likeness to fears and aging. That's a earth copy? For the stable door being closed? Does that mean no human can come visit narnia ever again from earth?
