Don’t say “even with ETA movements”! There is nothing to be ashamed of when using/wearing an ETA calibre. ETA is the most successful movement manufacturer of the entire industry. No other manufacturer has such experience in mass manufacturing and/or successfully transforming existing calibres in newer ones. ETA was/is wrongly bashed by people who definitely have no clue...

Good to know! I always defended ETA because one needs to understand what the Swatch Group’s movement manufacturer is able to do... ETA has changed its strategy after successfully manufacturing millions of calibres and sell them ... Today industrial power and watchmaking experience is there to service and satisfy the different Swatch Group brands. The brands order/pay and get the best possible quality from the group’s movement manufacturer... Poor competitors like Sellita, they are light years behind. Even well-established movement manufacturers must be scared... Chapeau to ETA!

Thanks Alexander, just curious on your take. Looking at today’s ETA (I have an ETA from 15 years ago in a Tag, my first luxury watch, and it runs still at Chronometer specs) do you think the build quality is equal to today’s Rolex 3200 movements. As you can get whatever Swatch Group watch someone would want these days excluding the Snoopy or a couple of others, is Rolex in trouble?

@@jhb072 ETA calibres used by Longines today are as good as Omega calibres were a couple of years ago. Today Omega forms the spearhead ... Another great review Alexander thank you.I will have to take a closer look at these two watches. I'm very pleased that they kept the use of German on the dials as this after all part of the heritage. I know a little German so the day and month notifications are perfect. I like the radial date hand of the moon phase watch, I wish other makers would do this as well. I know JLC do this on some pieces. I would be interested in finding out more information on the chronograph. That Valjoux 7753 (90 degree shift on the 7750, hence the quick date pusher) modified without the uni directional automatic winding is a very well proven movement and when regulated is very stable indeed. My old discontinued Omega 300M Chronograph was based on the 7753 has incredible stability. The hand winding is a plus for me as well as it makes us actually have to interact with our watches to keep them fed with energy to run. I used to have a blinkered automatic watch view, no longer though. I agree completely with your observation on the strap though. That clasp mechanism looks almost as thick as the watch. A simple pin could be much more comfortable on the wrist.

Anthony, thanks for sharing your thoughts with us! It is fascinating and interesting how versatile the Valjoux 775x is. Did you know that also the very first “in-house” automatic Calibre from IWC Schaffhausen, that was presented many years ago, based completely on the 7750... So many successful variations, done by technical modifications, exist meanwhile ... I dare to call the Valjoux 7750 the most successful and reliable Calibre built and still being build...

Great value and you're right about that clasp, maybe a little too much for the money :-) As I recall, you reviewed another model of their's a few months back and it was also a good value for the money. I was wondering what the status of ETA products was these days with regard to the Swiss Government's actions. Last I heard they were to stop selling outside Swatch Group in 2020 but then the government reversed itself and said they must continue outside sales for awhile longer. Perhaps you can clarify the situation since you're closer to the center of the Swiss watchworld . Thanks for the review.

Do you really think that the Made in Germany was/is a disadvantage for the brand?
@benchapman67694 жыл бұрын
Public perception is driven by social repetition of what is a sign of wealth, and achievement : hence Rolex is hailed as the must have watch, with other swiss brands advertised as inherently better because they are " swiss made " and riding on their advertising coat tails accordingly. The average consumer will know or care little for german quality if it's not sold on the high street amongst the swiss watches. Let's be truthful, lack of advertising by the german watch industry amongst the popular press will keep them in the position they are in : good but not swiss made.

I have outlined a Dornbluth & Sohne. However, I have not handled a Union, as it is the similar price point, in your opinion, how does it compare? Many thanks...also I agree with your comment on over engineering on the clasp. I have a watch like this and it is quite uncomfortable to wear and digs into the bottom of the wrist. It's not a deal breaker for me though, as I can just swap out the strap.

Richard, I don’t want to be rude, but please forget all others offering some similar watches in the same segment. Only ETA can deliver such an incredible quality and only Swatch Group can sell it for such a price. The quality of this particular calibres is unimpeachable. This is the latest and best quality from ETA, the most successful watch manufacturer in the industry ... All others needing to buy calibres from external sources not having these possibilities (= not being part of Swatch Group) will have to fit outdated calibres (old ETA or Sellita) in their watches...
