Welcome to Robin Hood's Bay.
Robin Hood's Bay is a picturesque old fishing village on the Heritage Coast of the North York Moors. It is a fantastic place for adults and children alike with a beautiful family friendly sandy beach, as well as rock pools to explore and ancient fossils to discover. Wandering through its narrow, twisting cobbled streets and alleyways, you can easily imagine the sailors and fishermen, smugglers and press gangs that walked these streets hundreds of years ago. Today it is a vibrant village, with a wide range of cafes, pubs, restaurants, small shops and places to explore, as well as many stunning coastal and country walks, cycle-paths and bridleways right on the doorstep.
Robin Hood's Bay is a village in North Yorkshire, England. It is 6 miles south of Whitby and 15 miles north of Scarborough on the Yorkshire Coast.
It is an ancient chapelry of Fylingdales in the wapentake of Whitby Strand. It is on the Cleveland Way national trail and also the end point of Wainwright's Coast to Coast route.
There is a wide range of high quality accommodation in the and around the village, making Robin Hood's Bay a great place to stay for a few days. With easy access to both Whitby and Scarborough, together with other parts of the stunning North York Moors National Park and Heritage Coast, where better to stay for a short break or a longer holiday.
Robin Hoods Bay Museum.
Visit this unique local Museum and Mortuary! Run entirely by volunteers, the Museum is a Registered Charity. Number: 1177886.
Displays include fishing, shipping, local history and geology. Details of the many shipwrecks and historic rescues in the Bay are recorded and there is a unique model of a smuggler's house showing how contraband could be concealed! A life size model of a local fisherwife has many surprises up her sleeve.
The Museum is situated on Fisherhead on the south side of the village. The building can only be approached via narrow cobbled pathways and steps.
Robin Hood's Bay Ghost Walk.
Come on a Unique Tour through Streets and Alleyways as you listen to Tales of the Strange and Supernatural, Smuggling and Shipwrecks, Folklore and Legend.
Meet at the slipway onto the beach outside the The Old Coastguard Station Visitor Centre. There is a board outside on days of Ghost Walks. It lasts just over an hour and takes in the lower half of the old village. There is some gentle walking up the alleyways and some steps but all takes place at a leisurely pace. This walk is suitable for most ages and intended to entertain, captivate and inform but is not really suitable for small infants (under 4), babies and pushchairs.

Robin Hood's Bay and the surrounding area is a paradise for those who love the outdoors. Whether it be walking, cycling, horse-riding or simply sitting on a convenient bench or rock taking in the views, there is something for everybody to enjoy.

Robin Hood's Bay lies on 2 of the most famous walks in the UK. The Coast-to-Coast walk (192 miles) starts at St Bees Head in Cumbria and finishes here in Robin Hood's Bay. Don't forget to drop your St Bees Head pebble in the bay at the end of your walk ! The village also lies on the Cleveland Way footpath (109 miles) which celebrates it's 50th Birthday in 2019. This path runs from Helmsley to Filey, combining the best of heather moorland and stunning coastal scenery.
There are many walks in and around Robin Hood's Bay itself. Pop into one of the local shops or the National Trust centre in the Old Coastguard Station to find information about local circular walks. There are several options to combine a walk along the Cleveland Way cliff path with a loop back along the old railway, know locally as the Cinder Track.
Smuggling.
The village, which consists of a maze of tiny streets, has a tradition of smuggling, and there is reputed to be a network of subterranean passageways linking the houses. During the late 18th century smuggling was rife on the Yorkshire coast.
Fishing, farming and lifeboats.
Fishing and farming were the original occupations followed by generations of Bay folk. Many houses in the village were built between 1650 and 1750 and whole families were involved in the fishing industry. Many families owned or part-owned cobles. Later some owned ocean-going craft.Fishing reached its peak in the mid 19th century, fishermen used the coble for line fishing in winter and a larger boat for herring fishing. Fish was loaded into panniers and men and women walked or rode over the moorland tracks to Pickering or York.
