Narrow Gauge Engines Ranked!

The narrow gauge engines are subjectively some of the most beloved characters in the entire series! Weather it’s because of their memorable personality, or the fact that they debuted in season 4, which arguably has the most beautiful sets in the whole show!! Whatever the case, I intend to rank them all, and find out who is the best. Of course, this is my opinion, so feel free to disagree in the comments down below! I’d love to discuss with you guys!

You know it just dawned on me, Freddie being one of the Mid Sodor Engines actually kind of makes sense. I mean it was said and Granpuff “Engines come & engines go, but Duke outlasted them all” which would imply there were other engines on the Mid Sodor that we hadn’t seen. So I could buy the idea that Freddie is just one of those engines.

My ranking would include: 1. Rusty (You gotta admire his bravery and heroism in the show and episodes of him, clearly underrated) 2. Duncan (Love his Scottish scent and persona, but never learns anything to change) 3. Skarloey (Clearly he’s the wisest leader of the group and the show should have focused more of him) 4. Peter Sam (Whilst cheeky and snarky, he is so sweet and the gentlest marrow gauge steamie) 5. Luke (Admire his backstory and his fear of being sent away.) 6. Sir Handel (Quick to anger, but still trying to see sense and be really useful, he could be Duncan’s brother) 7. Duke (Such an amazing chap, wish we saw more of him.) 8. Mighty Mac (Amazing double-headed twin engine) 9. Millie (First female marrow gauge engine.) 10. Rheneas (nothing was given so far about him nor his character) 11. Freddie (We have Duke to thank for that) 12. Bertram (Wish we saw more of the “Old Warrior”) 13. Smudger (Used to annoy me)

my theory is that smudger was found and sent to crew to be repaired and than became duncan because when you think about it duncan and smudger kinda both have the same personality’s and they both come of the rails very often

I really liked this list a lot. Sir Handel is definitely my favorite episode and I like his personality. I can relate to him with my crankiness Skarloey with his passion and kindness. I also adored Sir Handel’s relationship with George in Steam Roller. Freddie is far from my favorite but I have nostalgia for him since I liked him as a kid and he was one of my very first track masters back in the day.

Ok you gotta give Mighty Mac some credit, they’re the only conjoined twin representation out here, and it basically has a cool concept on two people stuck together and learning to control themselves as even if angry, cannot simply walk away from the scene.

Your opinion on Rheneas, who is actually one of my favourite TTTE characters altogether, highlights the problem I also have with him! We couldn't see much of his character because he seems to have never been provided with enough shots or deeper stories in the TV series, which is something I really hope to see!

my rankings worst to best Fred - No dialogue, we never see him, only a passing mention. Ivo Hugh - Funny how he had an entire book but appeared on 2 pages and didn't speak Millie - Has absolutely no character. Fearless Freddie - There are two "Freds" on the Skarloey line. Anyways, massive missed potential, also very strange character. In the three episodes he stars in. The first one, he is a daredevil but wise, but also stupid. WHAT? In the second, he doesn't know what a bicycle bell is. I legit hate this episode. Then in the next one, he's just like an average joe. Mighty Mac - I like the general idea, but also massive missed potential! Just another "twins argue" character(s) Bertram - Massive lore potential, but just a Duke recolour. Smudger - I also love the mystery element here. Rheneas - Same problems stated in the video. Peter Sam - A nice optimist! Just happy, never dwells in the dark. NOICE! Proteus - I think this is a more successful Bertram. Once again, Sir Handel painted yellow, with Peter Sam's chassis but I think they play off the "mystery" with him much better. Victor - I think some people will want to shoot me, but here I go. He is used way too much in CGI and merchandise! His character is fine but why is he LITERALLY EVERYWHERE??? HE GET MERCH TAHTA ONnlKTY THE STEAM

The two deserved better since not only because he is my favorite Thomas & Friends character, but they also have a really cool design. *Shame on you HiT Entertainment for ruining such an interesting looking character!*

What a really good video! I really like how you explain stuff so well these types of videos are really good and you can get people hooked while watching this. I definitely agree with you even as a kid I always thought Rheneas was a reward or a legend he never really had much character and the cgi series did great with him in my opinion. Great work man!

Not quite sure I'd put Bertram after Rheneas. IMO you're not wrong about Rheneas (of the original 7 narrow gauge engines, he was always the weakest of the bunch in my eyes) but unlike Bertram he actually said stuff and appeared for much more than 20 seconds. Luke's a great character for sure, but I don't think he's better than Skarloey or Duke in my eyes. Just my two cents anyhow, I respect your choices. Good video once again, some very good points made, too.

I personally like Duncan mainly because he's basically a narrow gauge James, whom *if you somehow couldn't tell* is my favorite character in the whole show. Plus, he got some new fresh material in his two Season 18 episodes while still staying true to the classic Duncan persona.... and then he never had any relevance ever again

I was just wondering when your next video would be! About Fearless Freddie - it was said that engines came and went on the Mid Sodor, so maybe Freddie worked there for a short period of time, but still built a friendship with Sir Handel. About Rheneas - I agree with you 100%, Rheneas is a fun character, but we never really saw anything of him. I think if the other Narrow gauge centered books were adapted, we would of gotten more attached to his character. About Bertram - I think Britt and Mitton had plans for him in season 6, but after Hit took over it was never followed up on. Toby's Discovery would of benefited from a Hit era runtime. About Rusty - What are your thoughts on Rusty being depicted as a girl in season 9? Also, maybe I wasn't paying attention, but did you rank Sir Handel?

That’s a very good explanation! Personally I don’t really care about Rusty’s gender, and you’re right, I did forget to rank Falcon. Unfortunately my iPhone can only hold so much storage so I could include him. However I still have a section of the script about him. Sir Handel is a very entertaining engine. I love his dynamic with Duke, and how it presents a lot of storytelling opportunities. He’s also got an enjoyable rivalry with George the steamroller. Perhaps if he didn’t completely disappear after season 4 I would have something to else to say. It is quite fun to conjure up theories about where he was during a majority of the classic era, similar to the mystery of Bertram. But as it stands, Sir Handel fits his role well, but there’s another engine that does it better.

Here are my top 5 favorite narrow gauge engines in the Thomas and friends series: 5, Rheneas 4, skarloey 3, Peter Sam 2, duke 1, Duncan Also good video I respect your opinion on all of them and agree with alot of what you say about some of the characters. Yes I agree the narrow gauge engines are very interesting characters and pretty fun to watch too.

I like a lot of the narrow gauge engines in Thomas and Friends. They are all unique in their own ways and their personalities are terrific. Fearless Freddie is dare devil engine, Duke is a lost engine, Duncan is a rock and roll engine and Rheanas is a gallant engine.

Oh and it sucks so much that duke was not in CGI . fun fact: duke was meant to be in CGI in Kevin the steamie but was canceled Duke, along with Sir Handel and Peter Sam were illustrated in storyboard artwork for the fifteenth series episode, Kevin the Steamie, but were not featured in the final episode. It would have marked the return of Duke since the fourth series. In 2011, the same year as the airing of the fifteenth series, in an interview with Sodor Island Fansite (SiF), Greg Tiernan of Nitrogen Studios also expressed an interest of the character reappearing.However, when the original five Skarloey Railway engines returned in the 2012 special, Duke did not appear along with Duncan (who later returned 2 years after). In a 2015 interview with SiF, railway consultant Sam Wilkinson also expressed his interest to reintroduce Duke into the CGI Series, however this never came to fruition.

I would see Sir Handel portrayed as a young version of Gordon and Peter Sam as a young version of Henry. This was what is really unique about the two narrow gauge engines. But Gordon and Henry were not really nice towards Sir Handel and Peter Sam.

Yeah, I agree with most of these, but I kinda like Mighty Mac. There was a lot they could have done with them and they were kinda the first set of twins that had the arguing dynamic. And I do feel like Peter Sam, Rheneas, and especially Rusty had been more established. They all could have been so good if we just got the unadapted RWS stories. Also, did I miss Sir Handel? I didn’t see him ranked, so I was kind confused.

Yes reneas is definitely a reward yes he is even after saving Railway that was 90 years old in the timeline and it is a carbon copy of Percy's promise and Edwards exploit even though it was written years before those stories were written
