I sandblasted lorry chassis’ in Northwich in the 1970s. Did it for about 3 months. We used silica sand which I thought had since been banned. For cutting through the really fit rust we used black copper slagged (I seem to remember) which was amazing at cutting through rust. Some of these trucks made from 12 mm thick steel and rusted right through because they were being used to carry salt. On some of them, extensive welding is needed. It was possible to buy salt resistant paint but the owner wouldn’t pay for it. So we just ended up using a primer and Dulux gloss red

Hey Mick, 85 and only been blasting 2 months but I love the progressiveness of the work. I know you don't paint but how do they control the flashing before getting the surface coated? I've learned a lot from watching you work and from your comment answers.
@Mobileblaster

That's 1 of main reasons I only stick to blasting because soon as its blasted that's when your on the clock to get it coated. This project was to uncover all the potential problems and leave a good serface to weld to could be possible they have me back to prep for paint but as it stands it was to save alot of prep for weld 👍

You can do wet blasting with a rust inhibitor. However this is a mess and I don't recommend. Blast what you can and throw a this prime coat on it. Let it dry and keep blasting. You can switch to the other side of the boat too if possible. Something I've done in the past is contact the paint manufacturer and see how far they'll let the surface rust over if any. Do this in an email lol
@jmacdonald4681
@jmacdonald4681 5 ай бұрын
To add, if you put thin prime coat, be sure to observe the overcoat window in the data sheets so you ensure adhesion when you return to build you primer or add sequential coats
@Mobileblaster

@jmacdonald4681 it's best to leave the painting to folk that know 😏 and I don't lol it would be near impossible to blast and prim at the same time drying time would kill the operation even swapping sides dust would still be a issue

The way you word it there Rick, is very telltale you haven't spent time, effort and parts of your sanity fighting rust in any real capacity. Once you try cleaning a surface someone thought they were smart when painting with heavy rubber/epoxy coating with angle grinder, you'll be murdering to get a hand on Mickey's sandblaster. 2 seconds and that flapdisc is gunked up beyond feasible use, you can't do one side of a floorpan on a car quicker than Mickey did this boat with his sandblaster.

Couple of comments. Blasting with no attempt to contain the fly dust. Here in the US that would be a huge fine from the Ecology Dept. Not to mention the mess on any boats or cars downwind. Putting a plate over badly corroded steel is called a bandaid job in the ship building trades and is a poor substitute for doing it right and cutting the bad plate out and replacing it. (Whoever welded that bandaid at 23:25 should go back to welding school.) I was replacing the bottom shell on a WW2 LCVP landing craft in Alaska a few years back. The owner had a local native wire wheel the hull for 2 cases of beer. He came and told me there was "a hole in the back of the boat". The plate was so thin he wire wheeled thru it. Owner painted it with Sears Best exterior latex house paint.
@Mobileblaster

This is what happens over the years and the owner of this boat had a hard choice to make scrap and buy new or repair and they did the sums and the boat yard giving a warranty as long as you would get with a new boat at a fraction of the cost is in their opinion a smart move I cannot see as a plaster (bandaid) because the boat is built with 6mm sides its worn down to 3mm in some small areas in 40 odd years then adding another 6mm plate all along the water line = minimum 9mm in my opinion it will be as good or better than new. How do you know I had no attempt to contain the dust? Did you walk round the site and notice the signs and gates locked? All the parked boats are owned by the person that organised the work the media used is biodegradable and approved media none toxic the area was under control and the waste was disposed of. These videos are just a sinp of what's going off that's why I don't list them as how too. 👍

Here in the USA, you wouldn't be able to open blast a huge boat like that in a marina without a full containment surrounding the boat. I bet the surrounding property was a complete mess after you completed the blasting.

You guys don't have a law saying silica sand (kiln dry sand) is harmful to health? That's been banned in the UK since the 60s because of the free sillica. The media used was approved crushed glass yeah it's dusty but the area was controlled no public right of way and the owner of the Dock owns all the other property in this area even if the dust was to land on anything a hose off is the only thing required to clean it up. I don't make these videos as how too as a lot more is going off behind the camera to make sure this sort of thing isn't an issue please don't think I just rock up and blast a lot of information that is left out of these videos 👍

It would depend on what ya taking off because I can see the layers if I did strokes on paint thats got runs init etc the fast moving works much better. If it's new steel or good steel with no rust scabs or bad paint then yeah a consistent slow long strokes works better but this isn't always doable as holding the pipe isn't just a matter of holding it you have the blow back and operators fatigue sometimes wiggle motion helps reduce the stain.

Your accent is very difficult to understand. Your videos are great, but you do not seem to appreciate that your videos are watched in other counties, other than the U K. Perhaps slow down a bit and try and articulate more. Hope you continue to produce more videos, but with more subtitles.

Oh I appreciate every viewer that's the only reason I keep making videos 😊 thanks for the constructive criticism I've tried to work on my accent I'm a lad that hasn't ventured very far out of Yorkshire 😂 I will try that bit extra hard on the next videos 😊 (I find editing takes up alot of time adding subtitles isn't really something I can do I don't fink as I struggle with spelling and grammar) google dose do it auto but like you say I think the AI struggles with my accent too 😬 definitely something I'm going to work on 👌
