Congratulations. Having reliable power is very nice. For my wee van. I made a simple test. I brought the 100Ah battery that I could pick up! Hence lithium. Then I brought the electrics I needed for it. Still not easy, with a few hic-ups along the way (being given incorrect info) but finally I seem to have a set up working for me. Runs my fridge, not the freezer. But you can't win them all, and I can use the space as fridge so no loss. Just the ice cream, (which I don't really need!🙄)

Greetings both from Sussex. We glimpsed you both at Crick. Very useful information thanks for sharing. Power is the big issue on boats where solar and alternators might not fully charge them up hence the end of life of course. Knowing that you would think boat building would put them in easy accessable places ! ! Air fryer choice the Ninja 10 in 1 oven which you might not have space for. Hope you are both well. Safe cruising travels.

Thanks for the Ninja tip, although, I was just having a laugh with Matt. We have a lot of power saving gadgets onboard and I was joking that now we have new batteries that I was going to go out and buy power hungry items lol. We intend to really look after these new ones, sadly the old batteries were ruined when our inverter failed. For a few months we hadn’t realised it was only working to half of its capabilities, so ended up draining the batteries 🤦‍♀️ you live and learn haha. Aww wish you’d come and said hi to us at Crick, it’s always nice to put faces to names, thanks again! xx

Hiya Paul, thank you and lovely to see you again too and yes, the cafe was good 😋 our old batteries lasted two and a half years. But we had spent 7 months in a marina at the beginning on hook-up, so had the batteries sitting at 100% all the time, which isn’t good apparently! Plus, our inverter packed up last August and we don’t know how long it had been going wrong for and draining the batteries. We only found out they were bad when we got our first frost, when we woke in the morning they were on 11.6!!!! We survived the winter by running the engine a lot. Usually lead acids last around 2-4 years. Hope this makes sense and helps xx

Do you use power for a washing machine, TV, cooking or use alternatives

Hi, our inverter is only 2kw, so for our washing machine me have to have our engine on to use our 3.5kw Travel Pack (bit like a generator that runs with the engine) so we usually do the washing when we’re cruising. But for the TV etc we can use the 240v with the inverter. For cooking we use gas for the hob and oven, oh and we do have a microwave that we use occasionally. Hope this helps, thanks! xx

As you've gone from lead acid batteries to AGM do you need to change your charger? And how much solar do you have?, I'm about to take ownership of a narrow boat so trying to gather information on power.

Hi Michael, congratulations on getting your narrowboat 👍 Changing from lead acid to AGMs you don’t need to change your charger, but you do need the settings adjusted. We have 860w of solar (4x 215w panels) We went for the AGMs as they are deep cycle, so you can utilise more of the power (can go down to 30%) and they should last 6-8 years. We would highly recommend Matt Gibson from Onboard Solar, if you give him a call he would talk you through the various options to suit your needs. Hope this helps, thank you so much xx

Hi Miranda, our batteries were just over £1100 fully fitted and old batteries taken away, but prices do depend on your battery setup, whether you need new cables, main cables, or anything else changing etc. Matt from Onboard solar already knew our boat, as he had fitted our solar panels 18 months before, and we were also not far from his base. It would definitely be worth calling Matt, he’s lovely, his number is 07757 110917, he would be able to talk you through the options and which would be best to suit your needs, oh and give you a price too of course lol. Just out of interest I had a 9meter motor home here in New Zealand and to keep our engine batteries separate I install a separate alternator on the engine for the house batteries. Problem solved

Hi Alf, yes yours would work in a similar way to ours. We have 3 alternators, one for the engine, one for the leisure batteries and another for the travel pack/generator too, so all bases covered lol. We also have the solar of course. Thanks! xx
