Powering Our Narrowboat - Batteries

As a liveaboard continuous cruiser, four years into a victron lithium experience it is interesting and refreshing to see someone who has done their homework and clearly understands the subject and made an informed decision. Lithiums are great but they certainly aren't for everyone. It will be interesting to hear your thoughts after a few years. Enjoying watching your progress! 👍

Hi Dave, as a marine electrician, I do install Lithium, but do talk most customers out of it. It is just an every increasing thirst for more power, and that is not what living on a boat is to us. We were off grid for 4 years with only 400Ah and we were fine. Yes sometimes it cut the evenings short in the winter, but no great hardship. Moonshine will have 660Ah, way more than enough for us if we go back to off grid or CC again.

I'm a bit late to the party but very glad to have found your channel. I'm on bog standard lead acids atm on a sea boat that's almost never disconnected from shore power, as such don't really see the point of upgrading. However intention is to CC on canals &/or rivers when no longer tied to work so this all makes complete sense to me. Thanks for posting & I look forward to catching up on all your videos...

Thats great David, thanks for that. We are not really doing instructional videos, more documenting what it takes. Having said that, we are glad that you are getting some ideas too. You are right if you are on shore power, there is zero need. But we all want that bit more when we are CC'ing. Bog standard LA's just don't cut it at the moment as battery technology is changing so fast. Will you be getting a narrowboat David?

Lithium is not a finite resource it can and is got from sea water hence why they are used in electric cars.
