This is the first time I've heard someone call the back of the boat the stern! Thank you. You've got an Aga on a narrowboat? My old solid fuel Aga was the best stove I ever had. Lovely couple, nice video. Don't take any notice of anyone who tries to bring you down, the world is full of people who think they know better

Hi again guys! I used to live in Lancaster Jo, your home-county. Our first daughter was born there in 1982 ... In my defense - as a vicarious narrowboater - If I hadn't been abducted by a smokin-hot travelling-Kiwi and whisked off to NZ I would have without a shadow of a doubt relocated to canal-life many years ago. (Nothing like it over here in NZ sadly) I have sampled it many times before 1983, including the Norfolk Broads, am a keen fisherman and a country bumkin from Somerset, so the life-style and challenge of it all would have suited me down to the ground!! Soo jel 😆

Boat width was determined by the length of one man lying down across the boat as this way he took up less room that could be occupied by cargo. The cost of digging a canal depends on it's width, hence the narrowest canal they could get away with :)

Thanks for the Vlog guys, cool boat/s you have there. That snug is such a great innovation, I really think you have something there. Amazing to have a resident duck with a 'growing' family. That is something I don't think I have ever heard from any other Boat-Tubers. That lovely big stove is usually what you might see on a wide-beam but if you are cooking for the Cafe then you will need to have a decent-sized oven. I have Subbed because I want to keep tabs on progress with the boat renovations and how things are going with Jemima Puddle-Duck.

I think it is very interesting to see the different layouts of the narrowboats and how the owners balance the available space. In a way it is similar to how people balance the available space in a teardrop trailer, "I am quite jealous of my neighbors teardrop trailer." Your stove/oven is really nice, it looks good and seems to be a good size. I can understand a person's apprehension about using the toilet, I mean the last thing you want to do is invite guests over for a big chili cookout. How often do you need to empty the cassette, and do you need to physically haul it out of the boat?

I just discovered that I misses this episode. John Seymour was part of my reading material before he was fashionable, so yes, great choice there! It's great to be a bit of a voyeur and virtually snoop through your boat. All your choices fit my general thinking about living in a small space. It would be very difficult paring down my library, though. If I had a narrowboat, it would probably have a permanent list to one side or the other, regardless of whether the water tank was full!
@HollyTheCafeBoat
@HollyTheCafeBoat 3 жыл бұрын
Haha! Oh I'm always picking up that John Seymour book and gazing through it, fantasising about if we ever got some land. Is there any other similar book out there you know of that's worth a recommend? I only stumbled across John Seymour by accident really. We're hopefully going to build another boat in the next couple of years which might be a different take on living in a small space, but I'll always be with you on the books count. Impossible to pare down a book collection sensibly!

I love that snug!! I'd love to have that on our boat. We have a walk through bathroom on our 70ft narrowboat and it really does give lots of space, however, if someone needs to get through to the other room they can't. They have to wait 😅. I've gotten so creative as to where I keep all my books and art supplies. Our kitchen is actually in the middle of the boat.

Very happy to watch your videos. We enjoy anything to do with narrowboats and happy couples. I realize it's romantic to talk about being "off grid" but if you're filling up at water points, buying diesel and bottled gas, using elsan points, using cellular service, etc, you're not off grid. Yes, you're not connected to an electric service but you're fully dependent on "The Grid".
@HollyTheCafeBoat
@HollyTheCafeBoat 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Roger, glad you're enjoying the videos! Thanks for your comment. We used off-grid as it's literal sense of not being hooked up to the grid. When we are out on the cut (most of the time) we produce our own solar electricity and aren't 'plugged in' to a water source. We are looking to get a compost toilet, especially for the cafe boat, which would enable us to not have to rely on elsan points. Water is a little trickier as we move around so much, though we have looked into water filtration systems. They need to be quite robust to deal with the canal/river water! We don't claim to be completely self-sufficient but for we feel we are pretty off-grid in the traditional sense :-D

love to see someone using the Range I have been looking at a single range for a 57 ft narrowboat but my only concern was does it give off too much heat in the summer, or can you even use it in the summer? how hot does the outside of it get?

Jo & Vic, given you have what looks like an Aga in the kitchen, do you still use the little stove? What about summer. Do you have something else for cooking on?

I was wondering how you power your lights and fridge. I know you said you have 12volt batteries. Do you use the batteries with an inverter? Lovely to see how you furnished your lovely narrow boat! All good luck to you!!😊❤️

Hi Folks, I liked the tour very much. Apparently you finished off the inside yourself. If so would you like to come over and finish off my shell? Actually I don't have one, but if I did..... Nice to hear you use a few nautical terms. I am a deep water guy (bow, bulkhead, overhead, head, air draft, on and on). Looking forward to seeing your other vessel too. Cheers, Courtenay Barber, Falmouth, MA

Haha we'll let you know if we have any energy left after fitting out our cafe boat :-D We'd love a deep water boat someday, maybe once we've mastered the 3ft calm waters of the canals! Thanks for watching Courtenay, nice to hear from all the way over in Massachusetts!

Canadian here, I'm just curious how much of your heat comes from the wood stove? I have a prospector tent out in the hills near Algonquin Park where we go ski touring and I tend to burn a fair bit (it gets down to -40 sometimes).

So where do you store the canoe when not in use? as i would think it dangerous to tow it into locks or leave behind boat to fill up with snow etc.

Congrats on the new channel. You both come across really. One question is the cafe boat a butty or are they two separate boats? Good luck with the renovations and keep safe

Thanks Simon! The cafe boat has it's own engine so they are two separate boats :-) Cheers for watching, stay safe

Yes a walk through can be bigger but if a guest is using it then you can't get to the other end of the boat until their done. Unless you walk along the side of the boat. Just saying.

Do you have a holding tank for your gray water or does it go directly into canal
