Finally! We're throwing open the side hatch doors of our DIY narrowboat cafe for the first time! See how we cope with opening-day nerves combined with a MASSIVE snow storm :-)
For those of you just joining us, welcome! We're Vic and Jo and we've been narrowboating around the UK for the last few years on our 54ft narrowboat Zero. Last year we decided to give up our jobs in the city and add another boat to our fleet in hope of turning it into a travelling cafe and becoming full time boating baristas.
With just the finishing touches to go on our DIY build, follow us as we learn the ins and outs of business on the water whilst cruising around the UK!

Well Done! May I suggest you add an elevated, vandal proof, magnetic based rotating beacon that is highly visible to canal and towpath traffic, get and hold everyone's attention. If you added sliding glass panels inside both duck hatches you could be open for business in inclement weather whilst retaining a warm and cozy interior. Add "Push 4 Service" buzzers to the inside of your duck hatches, (They'll be on the outside when your open, and not available to the public when you're closed), and you can do prep work or relax between guests 😉 If you open both duck hatches, and post menu boards on both sides of Holly, you can encourage trade not only from the towpath but simultaneously from all forms of watercraft at your float-thru window. Don't scoff at it until you've tried it for a season, watercraft won't have to find a mooring and you may find a few lined up at your duck hatch like cars at a drive thru burger joint. Blessings from Alaska Gary

OMG!! You two are amazing. So full of life and optimism it's a form of therapy just watching you cope with things that would bring most of us to our knees. You both have film stars looks and charisma and I look forward to better weather when your sales pick up. How I wish I could walk by and try out your hot chocolate. It's -15 or so here at night and heavy snow. We're in severe lockdown so everything is closed except what Canadians call curb-side pick up. Is that how you're allowed to stay open? Take care and cherish each other (you obviously do) and don't fall in the canal! John, Ontario, Canada

Here in the UK, most essential retail shops are open for business as usual(with masks if course) and the other shops such as cafes have to deliver, or offer takeaway. Hope this helps :)

You are simply the first British’ish boat tubing couple I have ever seen actually dressing sensibly for winter on the cut. Woolens, Fjällræven, hats, buffs........it truly is the recipe for keeping up the spirits, and staying focused on the job.........and what a good job it is.....wishing you the best of success from Denmark Start every day with bacon/eggs and other proteins, and you can work a full day without hunger pangs....or cravings fur sugars...

Excellent. Well done. There's nothing like the feeling you get when a dream becomes reality after all the hard work, and you get your first customer. So pleased your idea has got off to such a good start. A long time ago I gave up a good career to build a boat and follow a dream. I survived, made a living, had lots of fun and have never regretted my decision. So of course I'm rooting for you two. Please keep your super videos going, they bring me a big grin and lots of lovely memories. All the very best. Thank you.

You two are lovely to watch, so personable and kind. I love how much time you spend getting the brew right. I would buy coffee from you each time I passed Holly, at least I would if I did not live in Texas. As for the chain saw, always grip just the handle, not the bar brake and the handle. That brake is there so if you slip or the saw kicks up (which it will do if you saw wood on the ground and the tip of the chain bar hits a piece of wood or other hard surface and binds-up) your hand or wrist will hit that brake forward and stop the chain. When you grip both you negate the main safety feature of the saw and put your hand in the direct path of the chain. Take care both of you, and good luck!

I lived in Oxford for 4years, and there is a little AMT COFFEE shop on the corner of Cornmarket and Ship streets. I bought a coffee there every day they were open, off a pretty blonde girl with an amazing smile. That was nearly 20years ago, and if I ever get back to UK, it's one of the first places I'll go, just for a coffee. This concept is ageless. Jo and Vic, you should do very well. Take care.

And 6 months later I stopped after 6 years all through the seasons and my God 😮 did I learn sohhhh much 🎉❤

So jazzed for you Jo & Vic! Congrats on your opening day success! What about an A-frame foldout sign for both directions on the tow path to chalk daily specials and say your open and a pop up open tent-awning with Holly logo on thin flaps saying cafe that matches the boat set up in front of the order window to expand presence and give customers a break from rain and snow or to set out coffee and tea condiments? Just some ideas...also advanced posting on social media your schedule of which mornings you are open on what days on which canal with approx. location (e.g. date/day/canal/town/distance & direction from a significant landmark such as a lock; you want the novelty of Holly, the only narrowboat cafe in all the world to get folks motivated or give them a fun excuse to get out of their houses and plan to come see you and to become your regulars) You've really done something so cool. Soon, you'll be in the news and people from all over will come see you, especially as you make your way to more populous zones...if you dare! 😊

Hey guys, from someone who sold coffee in markets, you can't make everything that people will buy!!! Yes, have dog treats. Once your walkers stop to talk, you can added items. I also helped to run urban Ace Hardware stores here in the USA. We sold tons of candy. To make you laugh at the stores I could often make money by making change in candy. Back to dogs, as it warms up water bowls to go with treats. Here in USA, we sell a lot of baked dog treats!!! At our coffee stands we trialed selling cookies bags which was ahead of it's time. We also bagged up cookie dry ingredient for sale, and that went well. Finally start a Holly signup list so that you can ping folks as you move into their area. This is great that you are starting now!!! As spring comes, people will hit the towpath and see people walking with coffee and pastries and get directed to you. You guys are the stars!!!!

Great to see you open. If thats the trade you get in the midst of a blizzard in February you should be well away when the spring starts to warm up a bit.

From dream to reality, I imagine you are somewhat pleased. If that is what you can do on a snowy, winters day in the middle of a pandemic, just imagine what the summer will bring. I'm really pleased for you.

Also put times and the days you are opening, so when people are walking by know to bring their wallets and purses next time they are out. Because when I go out for a walk I don't normally take money with me.
