This opening's ingenious in the sickest possible way. It actually shows all the anime's horrible stuff, but passes it off as innocent, random, cutesy crap, like when Ensof falls over and Hiroko gets "grabbed". Foreshadowing in its most twisted form! Maybe it's Kitoh's way of shifting blame to the parents if their kids watched it and ended up scarred for life...? "Hey, it was all there in the opening!"

Weird theory, but hear me out, what if the opening is actually the main character's imagination? She does try to look at the better parts in life and also wants to help make others happy which would explain why the opening is happy compared to the anime. She views Hoshimaru as a friend and not a weapon, so in her own little "world" she has created a personality for him (that's why he's making facial expressions and interacting with the other characters in a more lively way). One more thing, notice how everything is drawn and colored with markers and crayons? Well, in episode 1 she has homework, for her ART class. The drawing in the intro could her own drawings. This is just my little theory, but if you want to add anything to it or disagree, go ahead. :)

WARNING HEAVY SPOILERS: The thing that actually disturbed and bothered me the most about this series was not all the shocking and gruesome scenes... Those were pretty heavy though. It was seeing the impact it all had on the main character. The main character, who was pure, inner child,cheerful, friendly and cherished all those close to her...who never gave up! and how what unfolded robbed her of everything and left her a shell of her former self. It broke my heart to witness that transformation and what it left her as.

i’ve heard before that there has never been an untraumatized adult in human history, and that’s kind of what this series is about. it’s essentially a horrifyingly cynical coming-of-age story where adulthood is marked by the total destruction of innocence and happiness, and an observation of the different ways people process and act upon their traumas. i think this is best exemplified in the conversation between akira and hiroko (both of whom are sexual abuse victims, which unfortunately is all too true to reality) in volume 7, where they talk about their mutual feelings of hopelessness. akira, who directs her anger inward, says it’s all her fault, while hiroko directs her anger outward and blames the world. in the end, akira chooses to “mold herself to fit the world” and takes her own life, while hiroko “molds the world to fit herself” and must be killed by shiina to stop her murder spree. as edgy as this series can seem at times, i think it’s a remarkably true-to-life portrayal of trauma and trauma responses. i think that’s what makes me like it so much

The anime is super tame compared to the Manga, but the manga was heavily censored in the US before they finally just gave up, so you need to find fan translation. First ep of another anime written by the same guy, Bokurano, was seemingly misleading, but at least the opening sequence set the right tone... Now And Then, Here and There also had a misleading opening episode and nothing about the opening sequence hinted at the horrors to come.

First time I heard this song was years ago in HS, I used to love a girl with whom I spend every schoolday together, we were very close but I never told her I loved her and I’m pretty sure she did love me too, last day of school she got abused in her way home, I didnt knew till a few months, we still texted days after the accident but she never told me, I only knew because a classmate told me, she stopped talking to me way before that tho, and I couldn’t find the courage to talk to her anyway, and I felt so much guilt too, why didn’t I ask her to go home with me that day?. The visuals are interesting for the foreshadowing they provide for the events that happen with the anime, and also in the story content that _didn't_ get animated. Kaiju-Sized Shiina getting aggroed by Hoshimaru is a call forward to Shiina uncovering her actual dragon, _the very Earth itself_ and fighting off Hoshimaru, the shadow dragon who was really being controlled by Tsurumaru since the start of the story.

I don't think the opening is misleading at all. It's a little unsettling if you think about the weird creatures suddenly appearing in these credits. Moreover, the song and the childish art style reflect underlying themes in the series pretty well. Overall I thought the series was a commentary on kids growing up too fast and losing their innocence, whether that be on their own as Akira attempts to do by almost forcing herself on a fellow student and then killing her parents in an attempt at independence, or Hiroko(I think is her name) who was forced to deal with pretty serious bullying and the high expectations set by her father, basically sacrificing her innocence.

Mohiro Kitoh also created Bokurano. In addition to that, he was also signed on by Khara to design the Third Angel in 2.0. I guarantee you Anno has seen Kitoh's work. Also, you have to be careful when you equate the mangaka into the anime, esp. if he was not involved in it. If we're talking about Anno, Ikuhara, Kaishaku and Urobuchi, it makes more sense. Also, the screenwriter for this series is Chiaki Konaka, also famous for Lain and Digimon Tamers. Yeah, that should tell you something.

I was ten or eleven when I first saw this series. We had gotten the first disc from the library and I remember freaking the fuck out when Shiina was almost sliced in half by a swordy guy. Then I went back at sixteen and re-watched those episodes and continued through the entire series...I nearly cried.

Hear me out though, the most disturbing part of the show is hoshimaru. So throughout the show it’s kind of established that all of the dragons children are linked to a human who can sense whatever they sense, right? Okay, so who tf is hoshimaru linked to? It’s not Shiina, because she can’t control him, she can’t sense what he senses, the two aren’t connected at all. Someone is essentially following this kid around using their dragons child and we have no idea who. That’s fucking ominous

Actually, I think this song is a perfect choice because it sounds happy and bright when the lyrics have a dark meaning. This is such a nice and kid-friendly anime in history. I mean come on, you can't have an op like this without the show being for kids right, right? Gotta agree with you there. One of the first things I learned in media is that banal always sells (esp. in Hollywood). people want stuff like that because they feel it's "safe", which I find ironic in the case of horror movies. They are OK with being scared, so long as it's for the sake of it, but should there be a point behind it, that seems to be more frightening to people than the content. And I'm glad I'm not the only one who finds all the TRILLIONS of bullshit zombie things distasteful.
