To all people who don’t get the meaning of this scene:This is basically a satire of all the bad aspects of Japanese society(some of them apply to all societies though) These are the ones I caught •high suicide rate 0:00 •superficially “believing” in many religions 0:30 •Working people who can’t face the truth and run away chasing their “dreams” 0:36 •parents raising up their children to be their money cow 0:43 •voyeur photos 0:50 •people who never leave their room and use their computer all day long 0:58 •politicians thinking only about power 1:02 Edit:Reading the comments below, I’ve found many other interesting interpretations of the metaphors in this scene so feel free to scroll down and check them out!

Something I noted was that the politician was a daruma doll, where you set a goal and draw in one of the eyes, and when said goal is completed, you draw in the other eye. The fact that the politician is missing an eye could mean that politicians often set exorbitant promises, but rarely carry them out successfully.
@andrewc.29524 жыл бұрын
@Edgar Friendly that could follow with promising more than what is reasonable. You get one wish and when it comes true, you give the daruma his eyesite as payment. But... Four eyes? Sounds excessive, unreasonable...

Can we just applaud the soundtrack? The song they did whenever the parade appeared is so good. It perfectly captures the chaos and just the ignorance the people who follow the parade have. It's the sound of celebration but also a path of no meaning.

This probably took far less than the scene with the melting corridor. Here’s why: while the Parade is full of details, their animation is a short cycle that loops many times. The fridges and friends were using recycled animations from a previous scene! It’s still a great part of a great movie tho!

Toei animators wish they could pull such high quality animation like this today.
It took a friend's offhanded comment about the salarymen jumping to their deaths to cause me to start looking beyond the crazy visuals, and I was floored by how much symbolism there was. A masterpiece!

Whenever I come back to take a look at this scene, I'm always creeped out. The pointless vanity, the empty happiness animated in this scene. It's like the beings in this scene just gave up on life and instead chose to blindly be happy, being escapists and stuff. Its creepy, as expected of Satoshi Kon.

@KingBobXVI2 жыл бұрын
The music is by Susumu Hirasawa btw, and you can find the full version of the track pretty easily - it's quite good as a standalone (and has vocals).
An English transcription of what the parade participants say: 0:38 -- Businessmen which turn into instruments: "The dream I had yesterday and today. The happy and mundane world will vent their anger." 0:43 -- Mothers which turn into golden statues with their children: "The dreams will grow and grow. Let's grow the tree that blooms money." 0:48 -- Schoolgirls with cellphone faces: "It's most valuable while it's still a bud." 0:50 -- Men with the camera heads: "That's right, so we shall preserve the memory forever." 0:55 -- Homeless people: "If there is no flower, there will be no fruit." 0:58 -- TV/house bodies with faces: "If there's nothing, then I won't do anything." 1:02 -- Daruma doll: "If you're unhappy, please put a vote in this eyeball." 1:08 -- Business-men/politicians: The one top, struggling to keep his place, says "Who would give up this throne?" One in a pinkish suit declares "I am the emperor, chosen by the lord himself." Two others respond "I didn't choose you!" 1:17 -- Religious statues, American statue of liberty: "God and Buddha will change religions" 1:21 -- Entire parade starts repeating the lines the businessmen said at the beginning: "The happy and mundane world will vent their anger." It repeats for the rest of the scene.

Non-Japanese here, but here's what I can pick out. Here is my take on this Insane Parade. 0:00 Japan's high suicide rate. 0:23 mixing religious totems with toys and souvenirs. 0:25 Japan confusing it's national identity. 0:30 Japan's faux religious Identity. 0:42 Japan's issue as parent's are viewing children increasingly as possible money makers. 0:50 Japan's issue with Voyeurs and girls being told to "not make issues." 0:55 Japan's huge issue with the homeless population 0:59 Japan's issue with Non-functional members of society or Hikkikomori. 1:02 Japan (But honestly everywhere) issue with so many government officials making half-baked promises and many times never reaching promised goals after so many years in office. 1:08 Once again issue with so many figure heads for groups that nearly tear each other apart trying to reach the top can even be heard declaring themselves chosen by god, or being god at the same time... (all of them yelling "I didn't chose/vote you!) 1:19 Japan taking other cultures and seriously changing them. Also want to point out that many People either ignored the insanity and went on with their lives, watched in enjoyment, or became part the insanity/issue themselves.

Fantastic music. I've discovered Susume Hirasawa's music almost two years ago, and i love it. The animation is amazing too. I've had it on my watch list for some time now, i've gotta watch it.
