Another theory is she offd herself as "falling down the stairs" in Japan is essentially deleting yourself. Now in the anime I can see that as a possibility tbh. @@Kamon181but the promise comes after she heard that. His plan is the manga/anime is both more thorough and yet simpler… I think as a writer Oda was still finding himself and so there were both clever ideas and logical fallacies to it. For the former, he had a crew mate who could effectively hypnotise people, and set up a scenario where a fall guy was executed as “Captain Kuro” which is actually why Axe-Hand Morgan believed he’d defeated and killed him. On the latter hand, Kuro’s original plan was to have the Black Cat crew raid the village, kill everyone so Kaya’s death wasn’t suspicious… and then kill his whole crew so he could have the island for himself; he didn’t think than anyone would find that suspicious? The live-action is simpler and maybe more flawed in some ways, but on the other hand they kind of just embraced the silliness by going for an almost camp-horror, slasher villain vibe to Kuro.

I surprised myself when I realized that the Kuro arc episodes are actually my favorite of the series (the whole series is also my favorite though). What I loved is that it is the part of the show that feels like the Straw Hat Crew "settled in" if you will. In these two episodes all of the dynamics of their friendships are sliding into place, Nami and Zoro being calculating realists together, Luffy and Usopp vibing as goofs and relating through Yassop, and it all takes place during a mystery mansion caper. Not to mention the set design is STUNNING. Also Kaia was endearing and made it feel like the she represents the sweet and innocent people in the world of One Piece who aren't pirates...and are worth protecting by being good pirates and not bad. Now the crew is more tight knit, they make a lasting friend in Kaia, get a new crew member, and get their first SHIP. It's just all so satisfying :D

To answer your question, no, Axe-hand Morgan did not know that Kuro was still alive; Kuro tricked Morgan into thinking he had captured/killed Kuro. Also, the reason the 2 henchmen look so ridiculous is b/c their costumes are pulled straight from the manga. But regardless of how stupid they look, they are actually supposed to be elite members of the Black Cat Pirates, not just a couple of scrubs. That being said, I think it was a mistake to lean so heavily into the manga for their look b/c their costumes make them look ridiculous & thereby less menacing.
