Some context for those that don't remember/forgot, it was believed that Shukaku (the one tailed demon inside Gaara) was the reason why Gaara was able to control the sand like he did. So when Gaara used the sand to raise up Naruto's hand showed the readers/viewers that he still had some power. At the time, it was still unknown just how much control he had, like the automatic sand shield or the sand armor and whatnot. It appeared that the original idea was that though the Shukaku amplified the abilities, Gaara retained some control. The rings were one of a small handful of things that Kishimoto started on, then decided to forget about at some point. At one point, they were so important that not only did Akatsuki actively seek out to obtain them after a member's death, but Orochimaru kept his after leaving Akatsuki and was hunted down for it. Aside from the ring being placed on the same fingers that correlate with their position during the extraction ritual (like say, the person with the ring on their right ring finger stands on the right ring finger of the statue), there was no explanation of their importance. Even the kanji seems random. Kishimoto eventually dropped the idea at some point.

While I wish the narrative strayed away from Naruto, this is definitely one of the better Shippuden arcs.
