Not quite, but close. Matching their chakra was mostly for attacks they already launched on their own. The hand signs just make it easier to focus on making their chakra into the right form and element, a strategy all ninjas know because they were taught as kids. Haku and Minato were well known for making jutsu with one hand, so it's not necessary to make the signs, it just helps if you can't multitask on hand to hand combat and not exploding yourself with improper chakra balance.

Hand sign jutsus is basically spell casting for ninjas. Like in wizardry, when you are a noob, you use the hand gestures to focus your chakra to create an effect. Eventually, you learn how to perform the gestures one-handed. Then, you overcome the need to perform hand gestures. The handsigns mold the chakra, not just aid in either visualization of the molding or how the network manipulates it. The handsigns are a patern that directly change the flow of chakra, and if they made a set of chakra wood hands and were able to artificially push Chakra through while going through the signs: it would still work. The user can mold it without needing handsigns but it is somthing that requires alot of practice, ex. Naruto and his rasengans, immense chakra control, or instinctual knowledge of how to manipulate Chakra, ex. Sage mode. It is why some users can skip signs and/or only do half signs to do jutsus. Those are to a lesser extent but molding chakra with handsigns is basically using a crutch to do jutsus. Using a crutch is very useful and allows you to do things much easier, or to do them at all.

Its as simple as it just helps the user mold chakra for the jutstu. Skilled users of jutsus can use less hand signs(tobirama only needed 1 for a water dragon one time, and sauke frequently uses chidori without any, in this case the jutsu is a fire one...which sasuke is like the leading expert in along with lightning so i bet he would be good at the handsigns), or even use one handed hand signs (naruto, itachi, madara and minato have all done this). Extrapolating on this two person handsigns are used for the seal of reconciliation and multi person jutus, thereby if naruto knew how to do a fireball he could have done it aswell.

Naruto could still have gotten through to Sasuke regardless, and besides I also said I would have been fine with Sasuke dying in that fight. The reason I think Sasuke should have won is because generally in Shonen a victory in a physical fight symbolizes a moral victory as well and between the two of them Sasuke has the better view about the situation regarding the ninja system and the motivations of everyone involved. Naruto just kept insisting things would be different but you can't just say something without proof. That just goes to how poorly Kishimoto conveyed meaningful change.

I also wasn't super clear because I meant that Sasuke was looking at the issue more clearly than Naruto; he was correct that the ninja villages only cooperated because an enemy threatened them all. Naruto only insisted things would be different without anything to truly back that up. That's a failure in Kishimoto's writing. Personally, I think Kishimoto also misused the idea of the cycle of hatred because in reality hating or loving is a valued judgment. Hatred of an enemy that wants to destroy you is a perfectly natural response, the trick is actually to not let that hatred consume you. Really, despite the fact that I side more with Sasuke here, the real answer wouldn't have been for Kishimoto to force a moral victory for Naruto but instead to have Naruto and Sasuke collaborate with their perspectives to arrive at a middle-ground solution. Instead Naruto just wins and hangs out in the village while Sasuke travels the world actually keeping peace. That's a terrible ending.

For the Orochimaru/Anko case, it could be that the jutsu is made in such a way that you have to use the other person hand, because the jutsu affects both people, basically killing both, probably what happens is that Anko molds her chakra in such a way it kills the target and uses the hand of Orochimaru to transfer it into his body. In the case of Naruto/Sasuke, it might have been just a cool moment they added for the fight, but you can also argue that because they are the reincarnation of Asura and Indra, and because Sasuke has the Rinnegan who can absorb chakra from another target, they are compatible enough that Sasuke can skip the absorption step and go right into molding step using Naruto's chakra.

The hand signs are optional. Once you get good enough at a specific jutsu, it's shown many times that various ninja can use fewer or even no specific handsigns for a given jutsu. The way Kakashi and Sasuke perform the same exact Fireball jutsu differently for instance, or how the Rasengan...doesn't need handsigns at all. Handsigns are just there to facilitate the three things that actually matter: chakra nature, chakra shape, and chakra flow.

Iirc, hand signs aren't ever necessary. They just assist you in doing something you maybe didn't have the control/focus for, and even at higher levels could focus it further. Similar to training wheels on a bike or a hiking stick. Well, if you look at the series depiction of chakra paths in the body, it's sort of like water in that chakra flows from one part of the body to another. Because there's no real difference in the chakra between two people(it's all the same energy, just in different people), it makes perfect sense that the chakra from both people would get released in a combined hand sign. The hand symbols are literally just ways to focus yourself and center your mind and chakras before performing the jutsu because you need a clear mind and body into to perform them. Maybe I had forgotten how the hand seals worked, but I thought that hand seals were meant to focus the user’s chakra into a technique, rather than draw the chakra to the technique. Thats why Haku was able to do it one handed, because (I had believed) he gained a greater means of mastery of the technique. Some jutsu become so well mastered that Sasuke doesn’t need to weave hand signs for chidori, Naruto doesn’t need to weave for summoning Jutsu and Kakashi for a myriad of jutsu. Not to mention sasuke and Itachi with losing the signs for all their fire style jutsus completely, in most cases.

I don't remember if it's in Manga Canon, but we know that Tobirama managed to get the Hand Sign usage of the Water Dragon Jutsu from the hilariously high amount we see Zabuza do, to a mere 3. So my theory and headcanon is that it's a method of molding chakra in the body. Just like how a cooking recipe might be "1. Cut the chicken, 2. Season the cut chicken, 3. Place into bowl" can be shortened into "1. Season and cut the chicken, 2. Place into bowl". Functionally the same, but an additional step that can be removed once you know what you're doing.

Thematically speaking, it makes total sense to me. Chakra is a tool of empathy and understanding. Many times in Naruto, two people come to learn from and about each other through combat. Using another person's hands for techniques just seems like a small extension of those idea.

It’s canon and it can easily be explained by the rinnegan. One of the powers is to absorb others chakras from touch. So he’s able to directly tap into Naruto’s chakra stream. He does it more visibly at the end of the fight when they’re both drained and kurama made more nature chakra

Ninshu is proof that you can make use of other peoples chakra. Arguably if Naruto recognised the jutsu and could perform fireball jutsu he could have used it after making the hand signs with Sasuke too, he'd just have needed to know how to mould the chakra properly and how much breath to inhale, what hand sign to use when exhaling etc and how to properly aim it.

You can mold with one hand, they could be using the other person's hand to help with single handed signs. Kind of like a crutch to single handed signs

I always just assumed it was to show that they were in rhythm with eachother again, realigning and that their souls were coming back together, since they are the reincarnation of twins and all. But others have definitely pointed out that hand signs are more about focus, like a mantra.

Its always with people who are somehow linked. Naruto and sasuke are linked as indra ashura, kakashi and obito are linked with the sharingan, anko and orochimaru are linked with the curse mark

I'm pretty sure they explained way back in the land of waves arc in og Naruto, that you can do hand signs with just one hand available, so it couldn't be much different than doing that.

Since Jutsu don’t need to come from the hands, even when hand seals are used for them, then chakra may not be passing through the hands specifically. Hand seals seem to just act as a way to direct and shape chakra circulating through the whole body. In that sense maybe they behave similarly to fuinjutsu, where the symbology of the individual characters interacting with the flowing energy is enough, even without the symbols actively containing that energy.

Ok so the hand seal thing is a method of focusing the energy. It's not a matter of transfer. But rather establishing a focal point of how to use one's raw energy. That is what the hand signs do.

I think it also helps explain how Sasuke is able to do jutsus with only one hand. I would just like more of an explanation as to why its not more common to use one hand signs. Wouldnt it be much more efficient or even allow you to do multiple jutsus at once?

Hand signs just help your mind visualize the way you are trying to mold your chakra. A kinetic aide of sorts to rely on until you get used to how it feels and can do it purely by thought. Sasuke just borrowed Naruto's hand because he couldn't risk dropping the blade at that time, and wasn't skilled enough to weave single handed signs yet.

it could be the hand signs don't mean much they could just be a way to help focus the mind to meld the chakra correctly. if thats the case borrowing someone else's hand to make hand signs would be the first step in becoming able to one hand sign

Your chakra connects and you have access to both channels. It’s like how teleportation ninja need to hold hands in order to teleport even just one person (unless you’re tobirama or Minato)

Don't forget that anko has the curse mark so she has orochimaru's chakra and soul in it probably through her system given how much she is hurting by being close to orochimaru Also Kakashi has Obito's eye so he also has a little bit of Obito's chakra through the eye into his system It was also explained that the senju and Uchiha are descendants of the sage of six paths and the senju and uzumaki are distant cousins but still related to Asura and the Uchiha through Indra Also Naruto and Sasuke were given the marks by the sage of six paths so they both could still have the sage's chakra in them so it would make sense that Sasuke can use Naruto's hand like his own

My theory was that they are doing it subconsciously. They are trained and experienced Shinobi who do these hands signs like second nature. So when it is being done to them theur body just moves with it like a fighter blocking or dodging instinctively. That's why Kakashi was following obito's movements instead of trying to pull his hand away or hit him,he has been doing it for so long it didn't feel like a thing thay needed to be dealt with until then.

seeing how theres literal fighting styles devoted to the manipulation of an opponents chakra network (hyuuga clan) and countless genjutsu which is the manipulation of senses, i would argue that powerful jonin develop an understanding of not only their chakra, but also their opponents. just like naruto infusing everyone with 9tails chakra, or chakra draining medical ninjutsu. powerful jonin (specifically those with long term rivals/someone they fight frequently) are likely able to channel a portion of their opponents chakra through contact, if only briefly. like sleight of hand to pick someones pocket mid battle.

Never watched Naruto, but the hand signs are probably meant to be a aid to focus the power into the form they want, like Alchemy in FMA, or chanting/hand signs in JJK.

The way my brain rationalizes it is chakra is constantly being emitted from your body so using your hand and someone else’s hand to make a jutsu makes sense because you both emit chakra. You’re not using their chakra per say but using their chakra almost as like a wall to throw your chakra up against and make jutsu. The hand signs just help mold that chakra into the jutsu you want.

In literally the first arc Haku uses one hand to make hand signs, proving you don’t need two hands to perform jutsu.

It's WAY easier to justify than that. We know thanks to Haku that you can do ONE handed seals. So borrowing the other person hand just helps doing the one handed seals without being really one handed. You are still molding your own chakra.

This is not the only time. Anko used with Orochimaru, Obito did it with Kakashi too. You don't need others consent, you just need hand sign and focus on your chakra to perform a jutsu.

People forget hand signs is actually you being slow when u mastered something you dont even need the hand seals. It was taught for the build up of chakra for whatever technique you using
