While I've been building computers since 1999, I had never built a RAID system. It was a whole new learning curve for me. I applaud you. Awesome job!

I have that exact same case. I love how compact it is and the massive number of drives it chan hold. Word of advice, due to its almost non-existing case feet, it can become a bit of a dust trap. I am planning on modding it a bit in order to add higher feet. Kudos on your NAS build.

I'm building a NAS myself right now in a Jonsbo N3 case. With ASUS Matx Strix mobo and 14700K. I had to buy an M.2 to SAta X6 CARD since mobo only had 4 ports. I also bought 8x 16TB Exos X20 HDD all recertified (crosses fingers). Assembling it all later this week as more parts still arriving. I've been watching lots of NAS videos so this popped up, it looks great!

Awesome build! I have been wanting to build a Nas in the Node 804 case for so long! I just ordered one and will be upgrading my almost 10-year-old internals in my TrueNAS plex build now into this case soon. Enjoyed your video! +1 sub =)

Very happy that you did a complete build and installed it allows me to see that case is big enough to install everything. Will be using it for UNraid and as a backup and VMS and dockers. The case is at a good price and functional. Some of the software you mentioned is not familiar. It's always good to learn from someone else great review!

(I am a storage expert) Do not use raid 5 on spinning disks > 1tb in size, it's genuinely dangerous, but especially when used with identical drives. The chance of double failure during the extremely long rebuild time with raid 5 is actually very high. Raid 5 CAN be acceptable on SSD's because the speed brings the risk down... Raid 6 is acceptable but there is a significant cost in performance to both raid 5 and 6, so unless you really don't care about performance, raid 10 is really what you should be aiming for. Raid 6 technically requires 3 disks not 4 (though MD I think only supports doing it on 4, ZFS let's you do 3), though with 4 disks you can just do raid 10 anyway. Linux MD raid is very good and worth using when you want to run a non COW file system like EXT4, but ZFS or BTRFS are much safer and give you a lot of very useful features like snapshots and streamed backups.

Hello, was looking for a review of this case and found your channel. It's good to see other small time KZbinrs from my neck of the woods (NC)! I've done a lot of Linux admin/IT work and this video reminds me how it felt starting out over a decade ago! My only addition would be with large drives these days RAID5 can be a bit dodgy so make sure you have backups. I prefer ZFS Z2 (similar to RAID6) myself. My desktop is Fedora but I run a lot of Debian boxen and OpenZFS is in the contrib repo there. Yes the IronWovles (particularly >8TB) run hot. I used to go with the 5600 RPM WD Reds for noise/heat/power, but they've moved up to 7200 RPM now too. The speed difference isn't that great once you've got 4, 5 or 6 or more drives in a bank but with that many drives the heat and power consumption sure does add up. Thanks for the case review!

Hi Pixie, really good video and the reason, you’re showing the benefits of a Linux distro using the open GPL. I’ve used Fedora in the past, followed by Centos and now I use Ubuntu. Reason for Ubuntu, you’ll have more chance getting your RGB working if you need. One more thing, you can always disable your RGB in the bios (typically) to save you loading a Windows partition.
@PixieLaLuna
@PixieLaLuna 3 жыл бұрын
I considered Ubuntu (because I like the name), but maybe I should look at them again for the RGB control. I just wanted to turn the lights to a solid green. I did a lot of googling and most of people's attempts at getting Linux based rgb changes ended with their MB being bricked, so I didn't want to risk it. I will look into Ubuntu, thanks.
@DCBuilds
@DCBuilds 3 жыл бұрын
@@PixieLaLuna the risk is there even with Ubuntu, it depends on the board. You can load windows on a separate partition and rgb control with that.
@PixieLaLuna

Yeah that's what I will probably end up doing. It seemed this board in particular, or maybe just X570's, I can't remember, were particularly vulnerable.

Thanks DVSN! It's a nice case to build in if you were looking for a case for your upgrade. I went with a mainstream distro like Fedora and not a NAS specific one because I thought it would be easier to find a bigger variety of software, and tutorials/documentation for Fedora. And since it was my first time with this kind of thing I wanted to go with what seemed most straight forward to me.

I have the same case and I control fans through a Fan Profile using Fan Control. With 5 Drives in the system and a fanless PSU, the average temp with arctic bionix fans at 1000 rpm is around 38C depending on ambient. When ambients at around 37 I do need to open up the front panel to improve air flow and put the fans higher to stop the drives from reaching 47C+.

The parity bits is spread out among all the drives. It would be useless to have all the party bits on one drive because if you loose that "parity drive" you loose everything.
@chancem6575
@chancem6575 2 жыл бұрын
Parity is stored on one dive and is only used to check data in each stripe. Losing a parity drive will not result in data loss, but you will lose all data protection. Once you replace the drive parity can be re-calculated based on the data on the other drives.

@@adsrbad9733 Exactly. You loose storage amount of one drive because of the parity bits. And that's why I think people get confused. They think all parity bits are stored on one drive because that's the amount of data you loose, but the "data loss" is spread out among the drives.
@StenIsaksson
@StenIsaksson 2 жыл бұрын
If you have three 1 TB drives in RAID 5 you can only store 2 TB. To restore a lost drive it will use party bits from the other drives plus the data to recover it
@Matt43
@Matt43 Жыл бұрын
Depends on the implementation, traditional RAID5 parity is split across the disks For my flavor of choice, unRaid, RAID5 uses 1 drive for all parity data No matter the solution, the data can be recalculated based on the other disks in the event of 1 drive failure (no matter which drive). Once you have 2 simultaneous failures you lose data, good reason to have hot/cold spares available (or quick shipping to your location).

Why did you decide raid instead of unraid? Especially raid 5. Huge risk of error during rebuild and losing everything.
@yoshiyoshi9625

So are you suggesting just risk when losing one drive, lose all data on it instead of trying to rebuild?
@Ataraxia_Atom
@Ataraxia_Atom 3 жыл бұрын
@@yoshiyoshi9625 not 100% on your question but on raid 5, if the rebuild fails you lose everything. With unraid you only lose the data on that single drive that failed.
@yoshiyoshi9625
@yoshiyoshi9625 3 жыл бұрын
@@Ataraxia_Atom Raid 5 provides an extra security to your data. If you are truly worried, backup the data before rebuild. But for unraided drives, you lose one, it's gone forever. We got different logics, I lost data on single drives, between my scheduled backups, so I go with NAS and will always go raid.
@Ataraxia_Atom
@Ataraxia_Atom 3 жыл бұрын
@@yoshiyoshi9625 i think you have it backwards man. If your drive fails on raid you have to rebuild because its spread across multiple drives, if it fails during rebuild you lose everything. Where with unraid, if a drive fails your only potential loss is on that single drive, not the whole storage like in raid.
@Ataraxia_Atom
