Lmao right. Metal heads interpretation of these songs are hilarious. They take the lyrics so literally. Metaphor is such a big part of hip-hop you may feel lost if you don't understand this lol.

This is from one of the most Iconic albums in Hip Hop, ever. Nas started writing and recording this album, ILLMATIC, when he was 17 years old.

Wow. thank you so much. That truly means a lot to me and your time is valued greatly. Fun Fact: My music routes actually began with Avenged Sevenfold, they were the first concert I have ever attended, and I still listen to a lot of rock & metal. Gotta pay homage to those who first got me to fall in love with artistry!

The cool thing is one of Billy Joel’s biggest songs ever was “ny state of mind.” All about his experiences in nyc. Then a few years later you get Nas’ “ny state of mind...same city, but a completely different world.

You want a clean track without the hard references? Listen to almost anything by A Tribe Called Quest. They are absolutely legendary. No one would dispute it. The best song to review from them would be Electric Relaxation. Oh and the Houston reference was a reference to the fact that back in the 90s, NYC was very violent and there would be guys that would commit murders and then go down South to lay low. A city of choice was Houston.

this song is from the early 90's off Nas debut album "Illmatic" which many believe to be the holy grail of Hip Hop Albums. hip hop in the 90's was very aggressive, so tons of the content is going to be talking about guns, drugs, and the neighborhood that they come from. Nas is from Queens, NY (Queensbridge area) what sets Nas apart at the time was his lyrical ability from an early age, I want to say he was 17-18 when he created this song. samples are still very big in hiphop, but it was especially big in the 90's, one of the greatest to ever do it was DJ Premiere, who produced this song. Dj's and producers would go shopping for Vinyl of old music, take a portion of the song and would sample it and add their own twist to it. This song has 2 samples from 2 different jazz songs. The sound of hip hop has changed so much, and so has the content. I recommend Kanye West, Kid Cudi, Childish Gambino, Outkast, Logic, Eminem , Lupe Fiasco , if you want a different sort of content to review. Love the Channel !

This was the first track (discounting the intro) off his 1994 debut album illmatic, considered by many to this day to be one of the greatest hip hop albums of all time. He was 17 when he recorded it. At the start just before he starts rapping you can hear him say "I don't know how to start this". He was talking to his friends who were in the booth with him. What follows is his first (and only) take. Illmatic is a classic album with literally no skippable tracks on it.

Whenever I hear this beat, I picture the New York Subway moving along the tracks at night. This paired with the way Nas paints a detailed, gritty picture of a troubled part of New York at this time(mid 90s) in history makes this one of the greatest Hip Hop tracks of all time.

Please stop suggesting this. It is a fantastic song that tells great stories from several perspectives but these two have only ever listened to mAAd City by Kendrick. If they haven't heard the rest of GKMC or Keisha's Song then they won't understand this song, and although it will still have a nice sentiment, it won't have that wow factor. These guys said they had heard Stan at some point by Eminem (at least one had) and they didn't get the story of bad guy, so just drop Sing About Me by Kendrick. Suggest Keisha's Song instead since it has no back story

In the '80s, before the word "fake" was used to describe pretenders in the street, we used to call them "posers," too. We would say, "stop profilin' and posin'"... or, "you're perpetratin' a fraud." Then when the '90s came, "fake" was used to describe all of that.

Of course there are plenty of rap songs that do not of mention drugs. Look up X-Clan, Mos Def, KRS-One, Lupe Fiasco, Kendrick Lamar, Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, Rakim, Jay Electronica, MF DOOM, Digable Planets, Lauryn Hill, Casual, Souls of Mischief,Del, Common. I can go on and on.
@SleepFan771
@SleepFan771 6 жыл бұрын
Lupe Fiasco's whole first album does not even has swear words. He made it as the antithesis of hip hop at the time because Lupe was disillusioned with the sexism in rap. Good call. Common, Mos Def, & Tribe they might like. I think De La Soul's early beats would please them too with Prince Paul's unique sampling.

Nas was 20 when Illmatic released, but 18 when he wrote most of it. Illmatic is considered the ‘bible’ of hip hop, the greatest hip hop album ever. Nas is considered the greatest rapper of all time, and is without a doubt the greatest story teller of all time (songs such as ‘one love’ ‘you gave me power’ ‘rewind’) he’s from queensbridge, a project complex in inner city new york.

For the brunette dude you gravitate towards NY rappers more (Wu-tang, Biggie, Nas) because they all had that classic delivery method of storytelling. A lot of those songs paint vivid pictures of the life they and things they could have seen, which a lot of people relate to from living in Urban environments. Most of rap today has lost that same energy focusing on other methods of delivery

But you nailed it! I love that storytelling style of songs, especially the dark and brooding ones I really dig.
