NASA's Mission to the Sun Gets a New Official Name
www.seeker.com/space/astrophy...
"NASA's upcoming sun-studying mission, which will come much closer to Earth's star than any spacecraft in history, has been renamed the Parker Solar Probe, agency officials announced today (May 31). The new moniker honors pioneering University of Chicago astrophysicist Eugene Parker, who predicted the existence of the solar wind - the stream of charged particles flowing constantly from the sun - back in 1958."

Solar Probe Plus: We're Going to Dive Into the Sun
www.seeker.com/solar-probe-pl...
"After 60 years of dreaming of a close-up solar mission, it's quickly approaching time for NASA to realize that goal. Last week, the agency announced that the Solar Probe Plus mission has moved into "advanced development" ahead of a launch in 2018."

NASA: Parker Solar Probe
solarprobe.jhuapl.edu/
"Why Parker Solar Probe? We live in the sun's atmosphere! This mission will provide insight on a critical link in the Sun-Earth connection. Data will be key to understanding and, perhaps, forecasting space weather."

Doctor Shen Can't speak for them, but as for me, I wasn't being serious. By the way, Earth's distance isn't what causes changes in seasons. It's the tilt of the planet in relation to the sun. That's why the northern and southern hemisphere have opposite seasons.

*+Seeker Julian*, love that you say Parker will be within sniffing distance of our sun, and then go on to quantify that as being 6.2million kms, as if you could tell what perfume it wears. Seriously though, love this mission. I'm a big fan of anything to do with checking out our local planets but as you say, the Sun is the centre of this circus so it would almost be rude not to get to know it a little better.

Pick a point on the sun, let's say it's light is blocked by the probe. Problem is, a completely different point on the immensely massive sun just shines its light where the other point was supposed to shine. The sun is simply too large for a tiny probe to make a difference.

I'm excited for seeing an actual spaceship capable of warp speed, not FTL since FTL is currently and probably always will be impossible do to the gain of mass the faster you go. But warp speed is warping space from point A to point B! Once were able to get off this rock and explore other planets for life and suitable planets for colonization, then that will be the day I try my best to join the mission for going such a distance. Would be nice to actually see what other lifeforms look like other than predictions and concept cgi

So, falling straight into the sun is so difficult because you have to arrest all the angular speed created by the earth's motion around the sun, which costs a great deal of energy. What I don't understand is why this is necessary to impact the sun. Presumably we're coming as close to the sun as we are on this upcoming mission not because we're we're flying straight at it after slowing all that momentum, but likely because we're sling shotting the probe into a highly elliptical orbit. Could we not simply create an orbit elliptical enough that on one or another passes the object in question could be made to impact the sun?

They should use hafnium tantalum carbide to get even closer to the sun. That material is superhard and has a mohs scale of about 9 and melts at 3,990 C or (7,214 F)

I saw a big star earlier so close to the moon. It's unusual for me to see that because whenever I do star gazing, I saw distant stars only from the moon. I bet it's not the probe bc it's very tiny and not visible to the naked eye hehe #justsharing
