I remember when NASA made the heady prediction that the space shuttle (aka space truck) would someday launch as many as 50 times a year. A launch almost every week seemed almost impossible at the time (and it was for the shuttle) but now Falcon has more than doubled that pie in the sky goal.

A quick question. Why is NASA involved at this stage? A crucial test is orbital refuelling which is someway off yet.
@tippyc29 сағат бұрын
Because NASA is the agency that has oversight over civilian spaceflight. Spacex wants them to be involved, too, since the process they're going through right now of problem-solving and implementing fixes is also part of the certification process. The difference with Spacex of course is that most space companies do the "problem-solving and implementing fixes" part on paper, not in the sky.

Sounds like a probable working schedule but I would still be surprised if they don't get in another flight this year. It was my understanding that they have only a limited number of flights yearly from Boca Chica and if they still have another flight they can get in this year I would think they would take it. Musk said that he thought they could have gotten back to the damaged tower but didn't want to chance it. If that's the case the repair may not be too much. At this point bringing back both the SH and SS would require two towers. I just think SX would be better off to try for another flight this year.

I'm guessing 7 will be mostly a repeat of 6, but v2 rockets and NASA observers for the purpose of changing the Ship landing zone. That is largely needed for the remaining goals. With a march refuel demo mission, assuming "small" steps, that would mean full orbit (8), Ship in Gulf (8), Boca Catch of Ship (9), and two ships for refuel (10 & 11). 5 missions before the end of March seems possible but very ambitious and optimistic. If everything holds it could mean a free return lunar orbit summer '25.

Why doesnt the starship rotate to reduce focusing the rentry heat? This way they could coat the whole ship in heatproof tiles and they should have a silicone condom like sacrificial layer that goes on aswell to protect the emergency layer. Also, they could coat it in starlite too which is lightweight and made out of flour and other high temp materials. They could paste it on real thick. Or if they renter nose first the nose could take all the heat and it could be replaced every time.
@ericperkins307810 сағат бұрын
Who exactly should they hire to apply this ablative shield paste in low earth orbit at 26000km/hr, or are you volunteering? Please explain "flour and OTHER high temp materials" since flour is NOT.
@EJ_WA10 сағат бұрын
Same reason they aren't painted, weight. Painting star ship would add like 2,000 lbs, covering it all in heat shielding... Has to be like 25-35,000 lbs. Remember it's as tall as a 20 story building, that's a lot of tiles, ablative layers and adhesive layers.
