@elainepryor8803 Astronauts on the space station have lived and worked up there sometimes 18 months for a single mission knowing theu wont come home for 18 months. Both of the stranded Astronauts have been on such missions for a year+ in space. This time they'll spend is predicted to be 8 months which is a normal time frame for ISS Astronauts. They also are not alone up there. There is an ISS crew currently having a long duration mission. Supplies can be brought to the space station regularly which includes food, clothing, etc and that craft returns with trash and other waste products and experiements being completed on the ISS. Your comment proves that you dont follow space travel very closely despite that Astronauts have had long duration missions in space aboard the ISS since the 1990s.

This is what happens when you hire people not based on merit vs other criteria and/or do not provide the proper training to ensure that the work gets done correctly. Boeing has become a company of short cuts and lax quality over the past decade all in the name of being politically correct. If you don't expect and demand the best, you get what you deserve.

They've been there for 80 days, just short of 3 months. by the time they come back, they'll have been up there for probably 250-270 days, roughly 8-9 months. People have been up there 1-2 years at a time. The record is 878 days which is about 29 months or a little short of 2 1/2 years.

@@crystaluniverse1860 , don't be absurd, frail humans are in danger on planet Earth and they are in space as well. Just because a catastrophic emergency hasn't happened aboard the ISS causing complete destruction or deaths doesn't mean it can't happen anymore than you can suffer cardiac arrest sitting in your house and so could either one of them a couple of hundred miles above the Earth.... OP's point is that the Administrator is talking out of both sides of his mouth. They KNEW there was a helium leak before the spacecraft left the planet, there were other issues with testing/delays during the development and the first unmanned test flight, it failed to dock, the second unmanned flight it "met the criteria" and suddenly "It's time to send people in it to space with a helium leak" just because "It's not too bad..." despite other prior cancellations due to issues and then once they launch it, suddenly it develops additional leaks.... And NOW talk about "Our core value is safety!" as OP mentioned, absurd.

Their capsule is in the docking port used to bring supplies on board. The Russians own the only other available docking port. Too bad everyone is too proud to work together on that. And no, they cannot just undock the capsule. There is a risk that the broken RCS thrusters cause it to crash into the space station. That's the entire issue.
