Wait a second. Organic matter just means it has Carbon in it. Carbon is the 4th most common element in the universe. It would be far beyond shocking if mars didn't have carbon. But that's a long way from life.
@dwm11562 жыл бұрын
Organic matter means, generally, carbon-based, and specifically in this case, natural organic matter - compounds and chemicals that are the byproducts of living organisms. Other organic matter can be produced through geological processes, but these are distinct from the matter produced by living beings. This is why these indicators are so important - one or two compounds could be a slight indication, but a symphony or constellation of those compounds? It would be indistinguishable from the first solid proof of life elsewhere.

Seems like mars definitely has some microbial life. Need to be careful if we bring stuff back. Probably need to do experiments on samples on a space station. To keep earth safe. Elon needs to make a electromagnetic rail launched ssto that can take a few tons of cargo into orbit. You wouldn't have to land the star ship if you built small space ports in orbit around mars, earth, and the moon. Doesn't necessarily have to be big. Cuts the risk of human space flight by a large margin, since the plane can glide, the rail is simple and cheap, and easy to maintain, and the plane is one part with maybe three rocket engines, to give either a one or two engine emergency mode, in case one engine fails in flight. If you have 5 miles of rail, on a mountain and you can get to hypersonic speed, then you could maybe get 25% of the mass as cargo, so you could make a 10 or 20 ton space plane that is small and rigid, and highly reusable. The rail gives the pilot and flight control enough time to adjust the trim and get the plane flying flat so you get nice easy takeoffs when the plane is loaded with fuel and cargo. Flacon super heavy is still useful for large payloads, starship might be better for the long trips. Another thing you need is VR and suit controlled robotics so people can actually control an avatar worker and build stuff in space. You could just ship modules, and panels, and build really large projects like hotels or space ports, or even small town like spaces with areas for lease, and gardens and gravity rings so people can spend time inside and out of gravity for their health. You can pack stuff better if you build it in space, and it doesn't cost as much if you lose some stuff. VR robotic workers can also be used as input data for machine and vision learning.

And while NASA spends billions of dollars and takes 100 years to land idiotic rovers on Mars with equipment that can not confirm life or not on Mars or even if there was water, but guarantees a job for life for some university elite, Elon Musk could be landing a human team on Mars very soon that will be landing blind as NASA has not done any homework on the best place to land and set up a colony, and the team of experts in their various fields will be able to with their own hands, research, gather, and test on the spot, taking only a few years for Musk to be ready to launch the spaceship to do it and costing a lot less than sending stupid dumb machines for 100 years to rove around finding nothing and doing nothing. Remember, Musk will have a team of scientists, engineers, doctors, geologists, etc., there in 20 years or so from scratch, while NASA has been stuffing around finding nothing for 50 years after landing on the moon. Couldn't even find water, as I think it was a recent non-American satellite that detected underground water, while NASA wasted 50 years playing with toys.
