I just loved how you mocked your own joke about the madness 😅 as a student of phonetics, I feel so represented!!

I just came across your channel and I'm loving your content! I was talking with two friends yesterday about how to transcribe the word "couldn't". I initially suggested /kʊdⁿnʔ/ and asked them if that made sense, since they both know more than me. One of them said they'd transcribe it as just /kʊdⁿ/ with the nasal release diacritic on the "d" and the other one said a non audible release diacritic on the "d" would make more sense, like this /kʊd̚n/. From what you said about the word "midnight" I guess they're both right, but using the nasal release diacritic would be more accurate, right? I'd love to know how you'd do that word! Ps.: I've known about the IPA for a while, but I've only recently started to look deeper into it and I'm loving it! It helps me a lot with English pronunciation! :D

I think you said the word (beaten) with glottal stop ʔ not t sound. is that right can i add the nasal release to glottal stop also. Thank you.
@mollydoesdialects73943 жыл бұрын
I absolutely may have one of the times I said it! It can be hard to hear the difference because when you stop a plosive (like you would for no audible release, nasal release, or lateral release) what you're technically doing is stopping the sound in your glottis while your mouth gets into position to say the plosive that you don't "plode". But, if I were transcribing it only with the glottal, I would not use a nasal release diacritic, it would look like this: [ˈbiʔ.n̩]. I hope this helps, and thanks again for excellent questions!

Yeah, I saw that too. But I think it was in her last pronunciation of the word 'beaten'. By the way, why doesn't Molly put the length mark in the close front unrounded tense vowel? I love Molly, but she has to be a little more specific.

Could you explain omission of the onset please?

or just the d shift to a normal n? so it's n-n rather than d-n?
@mathersmarshall8235 Жыл бұрын
so can the nasal-released sudden perceived as a "held d" plus a "normal n", where in the first one the soft palate is high whereas in the second one it's low?
