for the word 'cut' it wouldn't also make sense for 't' to have syllabic notation instead of a no audible release? because both ways of representation kinda seem similar...?

Saying that someone sounds inhuman because they pronounce the T in city as a T is really not a good idea, no matter how much IPA you've had. 🤣 I'm from Scotland and I pronounce my Ts as Ts and not as tapped Rs. I worked for decades as a conference interpreter in Europe and none of my clients, among whom were countless Americans, ever told me I sounded inhuman. You need to stop being so parochial and stress that you are talking about US varieties of English.

Isn’t writing another ‘x’ in solidi wrong though? They show phonemes, ie the actual sound the written letter makes, and in this case should be /ks/. Love the idea of using ending examples which are much more common in English. But if a kid then says /ks/ when they read ‘xylophone’ I hope the teacher knows enough to say: well done! that’s how it’s pronounced in Greek where the word came from. It means ‘wood sound’, but English doesn’t like putting /ks/ at starts of words (suggest they try it, do they agree it’s a bit awkward?!) so we drop the /k/ just say a ‘strong’ /s/ (maybe the /s/ is sad its friend /k/ has gone and is trying to be brave). Now the word sounds like /ˈzaɪləˌfoʊn/ (or /ˈzaɪ.lə.ˌfəʊn/ in the UK). Good luck with the ‘phone’ part, ff$!

As much as I study about pronunciation I find more and more details. I ended up here because I noticed that in words like achieve, perceive, live receive when you add a s should sound like vz at the end, but I hear fs instead. Pls let me know if I am wrong or this actually happens. I think they made the rules for us, and they made exceptions for them; then they sound smoother😂😂. I need a feedback.

/ʌ/ has more of an open mouth compared to /ə‍/. Sadly I don't know alot of the American IPA, but I do know alot of the Brittish IPA and they are COMPLETELY differelt sounds! "Ton" /tʌn/ and "turn" /tə‍ːn/ seem completely different from my perspective, but not sure if you do... It's fun to compare different accents to each other as what may seem as a tiny change can turn out to be a massive difference!

I think it would have been more accurate to use "pero" ['pɛ.ɾo] the conjunction for "but". [ˈpɛ.ro] "perro" meaning "dog" calls for the alvelor trill typically.

To me, it sounds like you're doing a flap or tap [bɑɾ.ɫ̩] Could you explain what I am mistaking? I think I say [sɑf.li]. Is this wrong? I was wondering is there way to show the lateral fricatives that don't appear on the chart? How would I show voiced/voiceless palatal or alveopalatal lateral fricative?

Your video made me learn the IPA seriously, because I learn Chinese and all Chinese consonants are voiceless which fall in aspirated and unaspirated two categories, but I got to this point just following my mother tongue's example so I got used to substitute voiced consonants for Chinese unaspirated voiceless consonants. So I need to devoice every consonant when I speak Chinese which is quite a new concept for me. But when I looked back at my mother tongue, we have devoiced vowels, it sounds aspirated to me, and ç/ɕ is inserted there in my dialect which is not there in writing/standard form. I think I know the notion but I need lots of practice to get this into action.

I tried a (French) Artemus “Australe” red beer tonight, that’s the one I allowed myself for the week since I’m trying to keep my consumption low. Since the devoicing is more or less implied by the context (voiceless consonant followed by a normally voiced one), is it customary to write it for instance in a dictionary entry?

@alicemilne1444

No it isn't. The "veddy" sound was a feature of traditional RP, a social accent which was never used by more than 3% of the population of England (not Britain), and has basically died out. Nobody speaks like that any more.
