Really great video. I have a tip to wrap tins. Plant grafting tape. Its a clear stretchy roll of clingfilm (saran wrap?). I use it to wrap petri dishes for mycology, its a cheap alternative to lab grade parafilm. Its thin, clear (barely visible on the tin), stretches and sticks to itself and leaves no residue. As a kid, I didn't know any better. So I would dip my snuff in my lip. Someone told me what it was and then I switched over to long cut. I really wanted the tobacco experience so I got red man tobacco. That was like pieces of these long strips of leaves. That was a good experience and a flavor was quite good almost like a hint of raisin if you will.

Excellent video. I tried a random tin about 15 years ago on sort of a dare with some friends. Something cheap, probably copenhagen. We had a laugh doing some periodically on oour road trip. And it's been a long time since, trying all varieties of other tobaccos, from cigaretttes around the world and all kinds of cigars, to every kind of pipe tobacco, vaping for s short time then five years with snus and oral snuff. I think I'm finally ready to take the plunge into this interesting and unique tradition and your guide really helped to orient me to some of the beginner questions. I'm sure you get this a lot, and I will likely find it elsewhere on your channel, but what ten blends would you recommend to a beginner who is passionate about historical and traditional blends? My favourite cigars are paratagas, my favourite pipe tobaccos are blackhouse and squadron leader, my favourite snus are Grov and pima fint. Those are all typically medium to bold, oriental blends with creamy notes. Although I was initially drawn to British blends, I think schmaltzlers are probably the most likely to draw me in.

@SnusAtHome
@SnusAtHome Жыл бұрын
Start with something easy to take that you can use throughout the day, without an aggressive or overwhelming scent or overly fine/coarse grind. Toque Spanish Gem comes to mind, but any non mentholated Toque will fit the bill (they all also tend to be cheap and very middle-of-the-road in nicotine punch, too. From other makers, some Wilsons stuff is good, and the Jaxons snuffs are good for beginners and people switching from cigarettes. Bernard is good for a treat.

Correction: Toasts are made from not the leaf but just the stem. Some snuffs are fermented and some are not, some are actually brined. Premium cigar makers could learn a few things from the Snuff Masters.
@SnusAtHome
@SnusAtHome 2 жыл бұрын
I'm extremely doubtful of the claim that toasts are, as a rule, made exclusively from the stem (which I'll take to mean the midrib and ribs of the tobacco leaf, as actual tobacco plant stems contain next to no nicotine and are very difficult to process) - tobacco midrib contains relatively little nicotine when compared to the lamina, and doesn't lend itself well to being made into snuff at the exclusion of other ingredients. Far more likely, though, is that tobacco stems are used either to flavor or balance toasts and other snuffs during their manufacture. In the "Techno-Chemical Reciept Book", by Brannt and Wahl, page 353, we see a recipe for bergamot snuff that contains a mere 4.5lbs of American tobacco stem per every 100lbs of ground tobacco leaf - no other snuff recipe in the book contains tobacco stem, and the tobacco stem mentioned here is very likely midrib, especially considering the many smoking tobacco recipes also included that demand deribbing as part of their processing. In Wagner and Schreiber's "Der Handbuch der Tabak und Cigarrenfabrikation", they recommend 8lbs of Virginia stem to every 100lbs of "good Hungarian leaf" for their bergamot recipe - again, no other recipe that I have read in the book contains tobacco stem used so, and it's very likely that these two recipes were using Virginia condimentally to provide a warm citric depth to the bergamot, which already leans towards those notes, rather than in an attempt to cheap out or use them for some kind of necessary chemical alteration. Again, this Virginia stem is probably meant to mean midrib, as with the prior book there are a plethora of smoking tobacco recipes in the book that must be stripped and deribbed in their processing. This book, especially, is meant as a catalogue of tobacco processing techniques and a handbook for both beginning and advanced tobacconists and blenders looking for a knowing hand's guidance. However, these are books meant for fancy snuffs, or continental snuffs, and are also meant to provide "gold standards", if you will. The following books talk about the realities of industrial snuff manufacture, with revealing comments about cheaper snuff in particular. "Tobacco" by C.G. Warnford Lock, mentions multiple times the use of stems (he does go on to mention ribs specifically, and the use of stems here is probably meant as a shocking article, sort of a "they'll even use these!") and refuse in snuff manufacture, but never mentions the use of ribs and stems exclusively for snuff by choice - it's more likely, as stated in other sections of the book when talking about poorer-quality tobacco or tobacco seconds as a whole, that pieces of tobacco unfit for processing into pipe, cigar, or cigarette tobacco are used for snuff because they are either too fine for smoking, or yield poorer smoking qualities. The thinking here is purely economic: there are doubtless hundreds of pounds of fine tobacco flakes and chunks that cannot be smoked - why exclude them from making toasts, but include the stem? This book was, of course, written in the time before reconstituted tobacco sheet, which means there was no other option for tobacco dust and refuse besides snuff manufacture. The book goes on to mention that ribs are also made into snuff, which contain much leaf still affixed to them after initially stripping and threshing the leaves. Again, this is in the context of other "scraps, cuttings, and rejections". The author is aware of High Dry Toast/Irish Blackguard, but never gives explicit recipes for it. There is another book, E.R. Billing's "Tobacco", that says, in brief, that toasts are "for the most part made from the midrib" - we can assume that some percentage of tobacco leaf, either as whole leaf but more probably as seconds or refuse, was used. This makes sense from a manufacturers standpoint, especially today, where consistency in product is more desired in tobacco. In brief, high dry toasts absolutely contain midrib, but definitely contain some considerable percentage of true lamina, probably at first as manufacturing accident in an attempt to reuse refuse but now intentionally in an aim towards keeping in line with established recipes. Toasts do, after all, taste different from each other! Very thoughtful post, I appreciate it greatly!

@@SnusAtHomesir, this is a Wendy's 🤣🤣 I'm just getting into snuff. I love cigarettes but you can only pick a couple kinds that are actually tobacco versus gross low temp additives and shit. Cigars are cool to me under the right circumstances but I love the act of sniffing as bad as some demographics have made that socially. I'm just sick of criminal taxation and marketing toward creating habitual fiends versus sitting and actually decompressing over something you enjoy. I'm so excited for my first order haha

I have tried many, even some American ones but from my experience I can say that Friborg & Treyer are always the most classic and elegant tobaccos, still 3 packs forgotten in a drawer for 10 years. Then I really like Bernard's elaborate ones but it's a much softer and "pleasant" style, almost pimp, which aimed a lot on sweetness.

The SP terminology debate is so much fun! :) I think it would've been useful to note that for most people finer grind, less scenting, and (most crucially) minimal moisture all translate to less or even no clogging and leave one with moister nasal mucosa. Dry snuffs are also far more resilient to the degradations attending long-term storage (speaking of storage, small glass containers serve as excellent decanters). Truly don't understand the appeal of moist nasal snuff for these reasons.
@SnusAtHome
@SnusAtHome Жыл бұрын
In my experience, the nosefeel lasts longer, and is subjectively stronger once it gets going. It also has a stronger natural tobacco flavor in the moist nasal snuffs for which it counts, and the larger grind is easier to take (at least for me, but anecdotally for many others as well).
@seth5143
@seth5143 Жыл бұрын
@@SnusAtHome Ah, I see. I suppose such preferences ultimately boil down to the reasons different people would state for using the product in the first place. Treating upper respiratory issues like seasonal allergies is my number one reason by quite a wide margin and I appreciate that this renders me a member of a niche minority. The consequences of my condition mean that coarser snuffs are much harder to take, all scents are muted, and my nose is already much drier than an unaffected person. So the drier, finer, plainer snuffs are my preference (for anyone confused by this, look into the way our bodies maintain homeostasis).

I'm still working on the Wilsons of Sharrow and Bernard reviews, but I don't consider those "main content" if that makes any sense. I really want to do some more stuff on snus, exploring the culture and doing interviews, so that's what's in the works :^) Also, updating everything from before I upgraded equipment. I want to make stuff that's as clear as possible so that people are equipped with all the knowledge they need and understand the -theory- of snuffblending and snusblending before they go into into the hobby by themselves, so they get creative and don't just follow my stuff by rote. People post snuff they made, things I would have never dreamed of, and recommend my tutorials, which means they either followed my stuff to start and left it behind as they got better, or started blending before they knew of me and approve of my work. Nothing could be more humbling, but there's always stuff to do better!

I dont use any flavourings, cos i like the tobaccos own flavour. In the snus you buy diffrent flavoures are common. In swedish snus you also use alkeline like potash.
