This really was a historic standpoint. For a boxy muscle car made in 1969, the Charger, reaching 200 mph is NO small feat at that time, especially with a still-unbeliveable 0.28 drag coefficient. Most stock Nascar cars including the stock Charger from that period only go about 175 or so. But this is what made the Areo War Mopars so infamous in the sport.

@Cobra428SCJ2 жыл бұрын
Who told you it was limited to 305ci? Some Mopar mag? Let's get this straight! The Daytona wasn't so fast that it was limited to a small block. All the aero cars including the Ford Talladega and the Mercury Spoiler II were penalized an extra 420 pounds if they ran a 7 Liter engine, or they could run a 5 Liter (305ci) engine. The president of NASCAR, Bill France, hated the aero cars from a four brands, he thought it made the sport not only unsafe, but out of reach for the common man to afford to race. So he penalized the cars to the point that they were no longer competitive. The lone Daytona you spoke of at the 1971 Daytona led 1 or 2 laps during a caution when everyone else pitted. Then it overheated and blew the motor and never finished. Don't believe the Hemi Hype
@Cobra428SCJ2 жыл бұрын
Think about this for a minute; the 1969 Mercury Spoiler II in 1970 was running 199.xx mph without a pointy nose or a giant wing! It did it with a year old racecar and without help from Ford since they pulled out of racing after winning the 1969 season. Ford no longer did R&D on the Boss 429 engine or developed any new racing parts. Funny how the Mopar mags never tell the reader the whole story.

Talladega is 2.6 miles around the inside, which is how every track was measured, until Big Bill France made Talladega and called it "2.66 miles". So that "200 MPH lap" was actually 196 MPH. Check out how NASCAR changed the distance on almost every track in 1969-1970 by measuring around the outside. In 1971, after the restrictor plates were implemented, Michigan is listed as 2.00 miles for USAC and 2.04 for NASCAR to make the cars 'faster' than the USAC cars. Bill France was a marketing genius, aka 'con man'.

ATTENTION: DONT BELIEVE THE HYPE! They will tell you that of the 48 races in 1970, the Superbird and Daytona won 38 of them! THAT IS WRONG! Back then, not all the tracks were big fast tracks like we see today. In 1970, the Daytona and Superbird only raced on tracks that were 1-mile or longer called Super Speedways. There were 19 such races that year. Ford Talladega won 3, the Mercury Spoiler won 4, the Dodge Daytona won 4 and the Superbird won 8. So together those ugly winged things won only 12 of the 48 races. The rest were won with regular nosed cars.

Why do you fanboys always have to pretend it was different than reality? If your ego really that fragile?
@davidthayer69696 жыл бұрын
with all the hype , when the full entourage of winged cars made their debut at Daytona in 1970 I guess it was very disheartening to see the Fords were still much faster.......so I guess Chrysler pulled this stunt to save face over the fact the winged cars were still not as fast as the Fords and Mercury. I am sure that if ford had tweaked a Cyclone Spoiler II, and done the same pr stunt it would have been 2-5 mph faster than the Dodge.
@jayschmahl92063 жыл бұрын
Right David, the Ford's were so much faster. Dream on. Is that why Ford was feverishly working on their King Cobra Torino aero body because they were so much faster? Ford Torino's and Merc Cyclone's had the edge in '68. They had better aerodynamics. Thank Chrysler for that. Ford took a page from the Chrysler playbook and copied the '66/7 Dodge Charger fastback shape. '68 Dodge Charger's and Plymouth Belvedere's didn't cheat the wind as good as the Ford's. Dodge followed with the Charger 500 and then the Daytona. The brass at Plymouth was losing interest in stock car racing and Petty left Plymouth for Ford because Chrysler wouldn't let him drive a Daytona. They wanted him in a Plymouth. The exec's at Plymouth had a change of heart and brought out the Superbird bringing Petty back to Plymouth. If Ford's were so superior, Petty would have stayed with Ford. I also remember Richard Petty sharing his thought's on how much more stable his Plymouth's were at speed compared to the competition. Ford and Chrysler beat the h*** out of each other, but Chrysler was the true innovator.

@@davidthayer6969 Ford cancelled the King Cobra, but there already was a working prototype. There was a reason Ford developed it. Chrysler was working on a '71 Superbird too. It was to one up the competition. From 1968 to 1971, Ford's only real advantage was in '68. They used wind tunnel testing to develop the Torino and Cyclone model's. They caught Chrysler sleeping, but Ford took a page from Chrysler with the fastback design.
@davidthayer69693 жыл бұрын
@@jayschmahl9206 Jay I like your enthusiasm but your facts are a little sketchy, actually Ford had two KC prototypes and had spent close to $1Million on tooling to make a Mercury version. If you think Fords only advantage was in 68, I guess you overlooked 1969........the Fords won every superspeedway event except for the last race of the year. Even after the introduction of the Daytona. The winged mopars were still no match for the droop nosed fords.......the First real race was at Charlotte where the FOrds swept the first 4 qualifying spots over the daytona , dominated and won.......the next race at rockingham was worse with the closest Daytona 20 laps behind the winning Ford. 1970 started out to be the same with Ford again dominating at Riverside as the winged cars were terrible on a road course......then at Daytona, again the fords dominated qualifying with Cale setting a race record of 183 avg mph in the first 125. A record that still stands as the fastest points race ever at daytona. Go watch the video......Cale and Pearson could run off and leave the winged cars at will......hamilton did a great job of getting the win but only got it because Pearson thought he could make in on two tires. Then after Daytona, Ford completely pulled nascar funding. In reality the Winged mopars only raced the droop nose fords head to head in 14 races with the Fords winning 10 of those.
