Listen, I know we all hate track limits penalties and all that guff, but I really don't think having zero track limits at all and just letting drivers invent their own layouts is a valid solution either. Surely there has to be some kind of middle ground? Races at Watkins Glen are an absolute joke now, everyone just ignores Turn 1 and runs right out to the barrier, using the entire runoff area (which is supposed to be there for safety?) as the racing line instead. It wasn't as bad here believe it or not, but still, seeing some of the most elite drivers in racing just cutting corners and ignoring the track layout altogether just looks so amateur. Its like a Forza open lobby with all penalties turned off 😅 Surely there has to be a happy medium right? Like okay, no five-second penalties for touching a single white line or whatever, but maybe like, a warning if you put all four wheels completely off the racing surface altogether? And then a penalty if you keep doing it blatantly? Thats how most sensible series do it, and I know Supercars has a three-strikes system for kerb-hopping/corner-cutting at certain tracks. Like you can get away with it once or twice, especially if its in avoidance or you've been forced wide, but you get pinged if you keep pushing your luck. Because ultimately, racers will do whatever they can get away with to go faster, and if there's no rules against shortcutting corners or inventing your own layout, they'll do just that. Then again, they've somehow managed to make this happen on an oval too - Phoenix is an absolute shambles these days 🤣

Indycar said when they returned they'd use electronic timing lines on the exit of Turn 19 to enforce the limits, since they don't like to make subjective calls. But the series hasn't been back since.
