Used to bump into Mark all the time when he lived up the road. I remember having a VW Golf VR6 come screaming up behind me on my way home from work one day. I had Mondeo ST24 at the time, so thought I'd have some fun with it. Didn't matter how hard I pushed, the Golf was glued to my rear end. Looked in the mirror and saw Mark behind the wheel and realised I wasn't going to win this one 🤣

This is, BY A LIGHT YEAR, the greatest in-car video I have EVER watched!! And I’ve seen as many as I can find. This car and this driver are both BEYOND amazing. What is really impressive is he’s just doing commentary as if he were an outside spectator and not the driver going outrageously fast with little room for error. The driver is extremely confident, superbly talented, and he could probably recite every turn and bump if he were a passenger and blindfolded.

The left hand drive is partly down to it being a WRC chassis and it being the standard in most countries. Rallies are driven all over the world and they drive to the stages themselves, so having a left hand drive car makes the most sense. It is also easier to get a LHD chassis off the factory line or from the lot, than a RHD car. All race parts are built based on LHD as well, so it would be very expensive to build a RHD one.

You are right about brakes on race cars. It is really interesting when you see a race driver from say V8 supercars etc have their first go in an F1 car. Yep, I fully agree. I've owned and driven a handful of moderately exotic almost-supercars over the years, and while uninitiated passengers are impressed with the acceleration and the noise, it's ALWAYS the hanging-out-of-the-seatbelt negative G of full effort braking that has them gasping in astonishment. Normal driving in regular cars in no way prepares them for the experience. This is in off the shelf production exotic(ish) road cars, I can only imagine what it feels like in a full bore race or rally car.

The speeds are impressive, more so that whereas the bikes have a weeks of practicing before a week of races and take 3+ years to learn the course, Mark in a car only has the opportunity to do a couple of practice laps. Although he has rallied on the Isle of Man, non of the stages take place on any sections of the Mountain Circuit and even though he is/was a resident of the island, like the rest of us, he has to drive on the left, obeying speed limits and not cutting corners, so he is fighting instinct when straight lining the bends at high speed. Despite the IOM TT being a meeting of bike racing, the lap record for a car is a real thing. The roads are closed to the public to enable bike racing, then after races finish a "Roads Open" car does a circuit to indicate that barriers can be removed after it passes. This was often a local car dealership going round in a flagship model and it was 'unofficially' timed. In recent years manufacturers bid to supply cars (eg. Audi TT). Subaru received special permission for Mark to run this time attack with official timing inbetween races and the Roads Open car. I live in a 30mph zone, Mark passed my house at 130 😀

27:54 Brakes are limited by the Tracktion of the Tires and they are also influenced by suspension. Every time you see ABS lamps go crazy in your car, your brakes overcome the traction of your tires. So not only the Brakes are crazy in those cars, but also the traction. Good Brakes or Racing Brakes are just more resistant to heat or disperse it faster so you have longer time strong brakes. They are not stronger or brake "harder" than yours in your Car.

As impossible as it sounds, that's exactly what they do. You have to, as you don't have time to react, you need to know. This is why rally has co-drivers, as in those races you don't know. He probably memorised it in a sim and has perfected it in real life. Look up Sabine Schmit, she was the Queen of the Nürburgring, she died last year unfortunately. She has driven the most laps there of anyone, knew it by heart and took a Ford Transit around it in just over 10 minutes.

@@Yvolve Well aware of it, still remains amazing for road circuit like the Isle of Mann TT, it is FAR beyond anything like a race circuit like Nuerburg Ring, with wide open track and clear spaces of bitumen. On the TT circuit the road is narrow, buildings and structures leave NO margin, it is still super human, and inthis speed record run the driver was on his own, no co driver reading details from a script, he even still commented the drive. Taking nothing from Sabine, but the TT is longer under much harder conditions.
@Yvolve

@@helmuthschultes9243 The Nürburgring is super sketchy as well, very little run-off everywhere. Of course not like the TT, but it has a lot more turns with less top speed areas, so it is a more intense race in that respect. The TT is something on another level compared to any race. Nothing is as crazy.

That was an awesome run, thanks! Very good car and driver, however, I think Isle Of Man has seen both bigger balls and more brutal cars: Give this epic onboard video a go and please share with us if you think it's worth it - so we ride onboard none other than Ari Vatanen on SS3 of Isle of Man during the 1983 WRC in his OPEL MANTA 400 with a plain floor clutch 5-speed STICKSHIFT and no safety features at all to speak of except for a rollcage probably, that's it. It DOES however have an insane engine, seemingly capable of the same speeds as the Subaru here, well wicked acceleration and Vatanen negotiates this beast of a machine on wet and poor asphalt barely wider than the car itself: Enjoy this epic and surprisingly good and clear footage: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mZOYf4Cui5KBbtU

Most countries drive on the right side of the road , only a few like most former british colonies and 4 countries in the eu being the UK itself , Ireland , Cyprus and Malta . On race tracks its usefull to have the steering wheel on the right since most tracks are run clockwise so there more right turns and with the steering wheel there drivers could get closer to the apex. This being a rally car that mostly are driven from point A to B there's no real point in to spend extra cost on converting the entire steering. Also parts would be alot cheaper i assume because of the way bigger market.
