It's called the Scandinavian flick. Great fun as a navigator, looking away from the corner before you get there... It was designed to wash off speed in order to assist braking. If done right, you can get on the power earlier because you're already facing up the road before you're fully into the corner, if not, then it's either an embankment or a tree waiting to greet you...😅

@@noelinsley8057 I somewhat agree, but in instances like that look at group B, co drivers still wouldn't stop looking at pace notes regardless where they were or where they were facing, but then again that may not be accurate to everyone as group B was just balls to the wall by today's standards

probably the most mental thing about the whole rallying is the fact it is on b roads and the driver and copilot can only go through the longass stage (over 20km used to be even more) once to make the pace notes in normalish speeds and then basically hope it will actually fit the speeds and roads it is a skill on itself to call the turns in right time with right describtions

Driving 110 - 120MPH on Roads that are not much wider than your Car, constantly getting Info from your Navigator and reacting to every unexpected move that your Car makes. Multitalents at Work with no margin for error. A recommendation: Trophee Andros - Small Course, small Cars, on Ice.

I love how deep youre goin into rally. their skill ( and balls) is truly second to none. heers a super niche category....GT3 Porsche Rally racing !! you will never hear a more beautiful engine noise from a store bought car made into a weekend race car. you will love these things if youre digging this stuff. I didnt stray you wrong on the Flying test video!! rear wheel drive , flat 6 cylinder REAR MOUNTED engine ... basically a speeding wrecking ball ! it takes a special kind of driver to not wrap one of these around a tree at every turn. you steer them like a dirt bike, with power on the rear wheels and use that engine weight over the rear end to get it to hook. you can see the rear end being the only thing letting these things pick a direction. not as athletic as a AWD compact WRC rally car but thats what makes these so fun to watch. these are consumer GT3s these guys strip to go racing, street legal with plates and all...nuts. kzbin.info/www/bejne/fGXdq4Jmi56LZq8. ( lots of sliding) or kzbin.info/www/bejne/inW5c6evh7OBnbM ( amazing sounds). 5:24 mark specially awesome moment. you'll hear them hit the top speed limiters on this one, they limit the top speed since they race in public roads and having 200+ mph cars racing around farm roads is a tad past the line of sanity.

The E30 you thought was out of control was basically overdoing a Scandinavian Flick, basically twist from left to right, or right to left, to set up tossing the rear end out to drift around a corner. As for the small French cars... they tried, but Americans just didn't buy them, y'all got the Renault 'Le Car' in the 80s I think it was, basically the Renault 5, but I don't think it sold enough to give Renault an in on the US market. The ones not used in Rally are mostly tiny cars with tiny engines, or some larger luxury sedans, but made in ways that costs an arm and a leg to fix, both in price, and the fact they're so cramped you might just lose an arm trying to reach in the engine bay. :P Though I think Citroen was in the US for a bit as well, as I think the DS was sold there in around the 60s or 70s, but Citroen back then was basically designed by people who'd just reply "yes please" if someone offered a selection of drugs, as the interior operates on some strange moon logic, with the radio between the seats, the handbrake on the left side of the driver seat so you keep getting stabbed in your thigh if you parked with it on and go in or out of the car, the turn signals are operated by some weird fisher price toy mounted nearby the steering wheel, the speedo requires a PHD in linguistics to read, and it's on a wheel that spins with a stationary needle, the steering wheel is a ring that's clamped at the bottom and somehow still functions, and some models had a manual transmission on the steering column. They'll run a hydraulic suspension you can lower or rise, but it springs leaks often, which sucks as on the same loop for hydraulic fluid is also the brakes and power steering, and it'll have such a tiny engine that they have room to spare in the engine bay, so they mount the spare tire ontop of the engine.... basically... they're strange, thus had a hard time getting onto the US market back then. :P

@1:15 the BMW performed what's commonly known as the "Scandinavian flick" - basically an early form of drifting where the car is steered opposite to intended direction. It was a technique developed by Scandinavian rally drivers in the old days, as modern rally cars are much more responsive and have better setups. It was mentioned by the late Colin McRae in this ride-in interview when he was driving for Ford after being dropped by Subaru. He demonstrates other techniques to the interviewer, Penny Mallory, who is equally as impressive as an interviewer riding with Colin as he takes her along for the ride. Word about Penny - she is an ex-boxer and was also a veteran rally driver (12 years) also in the WRC, driving McRae's Focus. Colin McRae - Pedal to the Metal kzbin.info/www/bejne/kJO3k42cirB2nrs

That is with RWD and AWD cars. love seeing a NASCAR guy get converted to rally! Thumbs up. The BMW at 1:02 was doing what is called a Scandinavian flick where you unbalance the car in the opposite direction so that if whips harder in the other direction--where you want it to go. however the wet conditions caused it to do too much of the "flick".

Man I love rally clips and I love your reaction to them, your enthusiasm is so contagious ! And just a little advice if you want to pronounce Citroën a bit better, try this : ci -> like the spanish for yes (si), tro -> a bit like throw but with a T sound instead of TH, and ën is just like the letter N. If you want to get it absolutely perfect, just listen to a French advertising for it. Your Peugeot is pretty good especially since I don't think the real sound for the "eu" wxists in English.

As an old guy brought up in the UK, I'm very used to seeing cars travelling fast on narrow roads in a motor-sport setting. It's a joy to watch your reactions to 'our' way of driving. I think one of the reasons why we excel in motor=sports and race car design is the fact that our roads were once, hundreds of years ago, footpaths - then pony and horse trails, then opened up for carts and carriages and eventually cars and tractors. Our new roads are of course modern but my generation saw the first modern roads; before that the widest were just one lane each way apart from the rare duel carriageway. The old roads followed the landscape and wound through the countryside, the new motorways and duel carriageways were modern and fast but we always preferred the narrow twisties. Narrow roads make one concentrate, speed seems exaggerated. Our cars, old and new, had to be small, light, nimble and handle well. Power wasn't really important. But when rally cars started to pile on power and 4x4 systems, our best drivers simply upped their game - but it's the same game we learned as young adults or illegally as kids - how to drive down a narrow track at speed. Drivers from the USA, more used to wide highways or straight two-lane black-top are often amazed at our narrow lanes. My American cousins, when visiting me in England over 40 years ago, were shocked at how I hustled my tiny 998 cc Hillman Imp at 80 mph (its top speed) over narrow moorland tracks while, at the same time, being amazed at how underpowered it was; at how pathetic was its acceleration. For my part, I was amazed at how my cousins could afford the petrol to run mighty V8s that could get to 60 in 8 seconds. But power is nothing without a feel for the lanes. The Brits rarely do well in oval racing or at the drag strip - we just don't get it. But the twisties, that we get. PS check out my other channel kzbin.info/door/fYLOmXZro4XbMvTuhreWrg

Man, Rally is absolutely my favorite Motorsport to watch. If you want to see what is in my opinion, the best modern rally video out there, I'd recommend: "Wildest Rally in the World?? Ken Block WINS at Rallylegend 2019 in San Marino!" by Ken Block. It gives you a lot of insight into parts of rallying that we usually don't get to see, and the video has a bunch of action and onboard shots as well as a mix of modern and old-school rally cars (group B, group A, etc.). He's the founder of DC shoes who then got into rallying and so much more racing-related stuff. He's driving a modernized Ford Escort Cosworth in that video btw.

Many european brands arent availible because they wouldnt sell well. Americans love big, simple to fix and cheap. These cars are small, not that cheap and not that simple to fix. The japanese could sell small cars reasonably well because they were cheap, and very reliable, so in effect cheap to fix (since they didnt break much). But even they need to sell SUVs these days. So, yeah. Maybe in the future, they will make a, probably rebranded, comeback.

@@ThatCarGuy1983 I am talking about when Japanese cars really got a foothold in the US market, the 1970s-1980s. French hatchbacks arent even sold in the US since then. In later years, neither franch nor Japanese small cars are cheap enough in the US, thats why the transition to larger cars are in full swing. A Honda civic is a much larger car than most hatchback Peugeots, and got a name for very good reliability.

@GoldenCroc
@GoldenCroc 2 жыл бұрын
@@ThatCarGuy1983 8th is way larger than a 206, a 308 is the same size. But nevertheless, thats not what I meant. The japanese small cars cornered that market 40 years ago, and these days french cars dont offer any benefit that US customer like, that could enable a comeback. As I said: Too small, to expensive, and too hard to fix. If you want to sell a small car in US from an unknown brand, it better be dirt cheap and run with no servicing for 100k miles, more or less.

well in drifts you can link a reverse entry with a corner. They start a small drift and lunch out into the proper line for the next turn it gives you more momentum sideways leaving your foot on the gas and taking a turn drifting/slliding faster.
